Is the tard pack really that retarded?

Ive been thinking today about my xbox360 purchase, and i really think 400 dollars is just too much.

especially because...

The remote control: Dont need, never used one for my original xbox
Wireless controller: Fuck having to buy a charge pack.
Component: My tv doesnt support it
Headset: Can i not just use one I already own?
HD: What the hell for? I'll take the memory card to save my games.

So why should i pay an extra 100 dollars for crap i wont use? Maybe the retard pack isnt such a bad deal at all?

By the time you buy a couple memory cards you'll feel like a douche knowing you could've got 1000 times more memory at roughly the same price.

It's all about the HDD. But go ahead and waste your money on overpriced 64 mb cards. :lol

are save files going to be mega gigantic next gen or something? 64mb seems like quite a bit for saves, especially considering 8mb was a good amount for games this gen.
 
Buying an Xbox 360 now is retarded, mostly due to the promises of future models with HD-DVD capabilities. When the HD-DVD games come out, why should you own an old 360 anymore?
 
If you don't use Live or plan on downloading content then it's not so retarded. Including a memory card you save yourself enough for an extra game.
 
It's considered a tard pack here because most of us want a wireless controller, HDD, etc.

If you ever plan on getting that stuff down the line you will regret ever getting the core system, because the price of the wireless controllers and HDD is pure buttrape when compared to the price of the premium bundle.

But if you really don't have need of any of that stuff then it's not really retarded.
 
The need to buy a $40 memory card makes it retarded.

If it included one, I don't think it would be that bad.

What about having your music stored locally? Also, you have to buy a memory card. That's 40 bucks right there. It would cost you 12 thousand dollars to buy enough memory cards to equal the hard drive. Also, what about backwards compatibility? None for you if you don't have the drive. Lastly, if you want patches for Xbox Live, you really need the HD. Even if they can handle it on memory cards, you could potentially run out of space a lot faster.

The retard pack is the retarded.
 
Well, obviously it's different from person to person. Your specific situation makes it sound like the extra cost of the Premium would mostly be going to waste.

At the same time, with the memory card so over-priced, you're practically half-way between the Tard and the Premium.

On the other hand, even with the hard drive, you might want to get a memory card because transfering data can be useful. Again, it's dependent on your specific needs.

If you don't need to play right away, you might want to consider holding off at least until the accessories/peripherals drop in price. It should make the right choice much clearer for you.
 
If you'll never go online, never use the online aspects such as downloadable content, arcade games etc, don't wanna watch dvd's on it, stream content from your PC, and don't care about some games that will utilize it, then by all means don't get the premium pack. It's not for you. You're exactly the small percentage of people that MS is catering to.

I take it you don't download much content for the PSP?
If you go online and want to download maps, tracks, music, etc. that 64mb is not going to last you 5 minutes.

Japanese PS2 was bundled with a mem.card, and they were all FUCKED (at launch) :(

Are you never going to buy an HDTV? Eventually you'll pretty much have to, and having the 360 ready to go from the start would be nice.

Oh, and what the others have said about storage, etc.

Why are you even trying to make other people convince you that it's ok to buy one? Just buy the 'tard pack already. Only you and your favorite 18 year old game store employee would even know.

That said, the memory card purchase will jack up the price as people have said here. So if you plan to buy a lot of games (doubtful), memory card purchases will eventually raise the cost to over 400.
 
Here is how I see it...

Retard Pack + 64MB memory card = $340
Premium Pack with 20GB HDD = $400

Premium Pack is easily the better value, rendering the 'tard' pack as... truly retarded. :P

Exactly. Think of it like this, once you buy the card, the core system and one game you're at the price of the premium system. Essentially you paid the same amount and got a game with the system, but no HDD, (which will come in handy for load times) no wireless, no headset and no remote. If you sell off the remote to someone with the core pack for like $20 you've already closed the gap even more.

As far as I know, the only systems that require a memory card purchase to save games are PS1, Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube, and 360 tard pack. (Possibly PS3 as well)

Everything else has had cart memory or built-in memory.

Hah, I was going to suggest this.

Sell off the headset and remote. Say you get $30 combined for them. At that point, you'll have spent $370 on the system, and you'll still have the biggest selling point, the 20GB hard drive, for $30 more than a 64MB memory card.

Also, the component cables you don't need also have composite connections, so you'll be able to use the same cable on your current TV and a new one you may happen to buy before this next generation is over.

Retard Pack + 64MB Memory Card = Limited Game Saves (due to space), Limited XBL Content Download including Limited XBL Arcade exposure (due to space), No Backwards Compatability, Limited to no Custom Soundtracks, potentially having to buy another memory card in the next year = $340 (or $380 w/ 2 memory cards)

Premium Pack w/ 20GB HDD = Nearly Unlimited Saves, Full XBL Content Download, full-on XBL Arcade exposure, BC, Custom Soundtracks and never have to buy another memory card or HDD (in the long forseeable future), possible loading time improvements due to games streaming to the HDD, 'pointless' shit like remote control, headset for XBL, cables, wireless controller = $400

You also ask if you can use the headset that you currently have.

First, I think the answer is no, but I'm not positive. Didn't they change the port on the 360? Someone can probably confirm.

And, secondly, the thought of you using the headset implies that you'll probably be playing games on Live. If so, hard drive is probably a must with game updates, maps, etc.

pgr3....................kinda. I wouldnt be thinking so much about it if it wasnt for the fact ive already dumped 230 bucks by trading in my psp (i actually made money off this deal)

In theory i could just buy back a used psp and it would be like nothing ever happened, but i figure im gonna buy a 360 at some point...

and im not gonna pay for xbox live

I'm going to say something controversial*. The tard pack is for mainstream PS2 and Gamecube owners. That is to say, folks who don't care about anything else but sitting in front of a TV and playing whatever EA, big first porty, or trendy new game just came out. So we, here at GAF don't need to think about it at all.

We can get our Omega Bundle, attach it to our home network, stream HD off our media center and rip de-DRMd Apple Store tunes to the box. And do all the stuff above.

* And by controversial I mean obvious.
 
The slow pack isnt all that bad really. You can always just get the HDD/Headset etc. later on anyway. If you want.

Of course you're spending more money overall in the end but it's no different than many other purchases (buy one tire today for $60 or 4 for $199).

well... thats your opinion... but in my opinion

- I always used my remote control for watching DVD's
- Wireless controllers will make sure there's no cord for people to trip on.
- My tv does support component
- I use xbox live alot... it's the sole reason I kept my xbox.. so the headset is very necessary
- I like the convenience of having 20GB worth of space to do whatever with... plus i can use xbox live fully with it there... and plus there is the Xbox emulation which require the HD


What makes the core package a bad deal is that adding the same features that the premium pack offers will cost you alot more.

It's smarter to buy the premium pack and have alot of accessories that you might use in the future than to buy the core pack and spend far more trying to get just ONE of the premium pack features.

the accessory prices made the core pack a "retarded" decision... not the core pack itself.

I think anyone who thinks they can get by with a tard pack will regret it later for some reason or another. Be it having to purchase a second memory card, missing out on some free DLC, an irresistible XBL Arcade game, or just being left out of a free Live weekend you would have enjoyed, who knows? If you can really justify all the features you're missing out on for a petty $60 that's fine. Me personally one of the things I look forward to most is not having a fucking rats nest of controller cords in front of my TV everytime I want to play a game but that's me. Still I bet the trade in value on the stuff you get with the 360 that you don't want would probably take it down to the ballpark of $340 but then you'd have to rebuy some stuff like an AV cable. Rationalize it all you want champ, I'm sure we're all more than willing to say "I told you so" when it comes back to bite you in the ass.
 
The Non-Tard pack also comes with a free game (some crappy looking tetris clone (Hexcite?) used to show off xbox live arcade), so that's like worth $1 or $2 more. :D
