Is there free speech on the internet?

There is a lot to unpack there. I've been thinking about your reply and the replies from others, and you're all probably right.

I think I've been spending too much time with my work colleagues. I don't want to get too political, but they're all ultra far-left and I think their views and opinions are rubbing off on me.

I take that back, you're not a cretin. What you just did there takes real character.
I'm not so sure about your friends though, dehumanizing people is never okay, doesn't matter if it is driven by intolerance or the greater good.

Sorry for being way too harsh on you.

This thread alone is enough to show how the natural state of humanity is tyranny. The whole idea of natural rights is an idea that has only existed for a blip on the timescale of civilization.

It's just the slippery slope of rights where people believe it's their right to have other people accept their worldview. Say my pronoun bitch!

Generally when people say they spit out their drink laughing it's a figure of speech.

I however did, did no expect the end of the sentence. Bravo!

If I don't post for a while, well ...

Are you in jail? No?

That's free speech.

That's the most simplistic, out of touch take you can have. Just because you're "not in jail" it doesn't mean that the status quo isn't mass censoring the population.

Kinda but also no.

I think there's more self-policing and echo chambering going on when it comes to censorship.
For example on Reddit the first posters generally tend to set the status quo in the comment sections and then anyone who goes against that tends to get downvoted and people will just say what fits into that to get upvotes and circlejerk.
It's the same with politics in these places, it's mostly circlejerks and anyone who isn't part of that is assumed to be some hyperbolic stereotype of '' the other '' ( same on Twitter ).

With that said I also think there's a lot of people who are genuinely bigoted pieces of shit who cry when they get banned because they spammed the N-word.
I actually think that the censorship in that regard doesn't go far enough, if you're not going to allow racism on a platform then you should be throwing people off the platform for going on huge racist rants against '' white people '' too.

Nothing wrong with be a leftie... Just like there's nothing wrong with be a rightie. Just don't go down the slippery slope of either side into tyranny. Jailing people for not being religious or FOR being religious (whichever religion), creating a police state for disagreeing with the President or some other nefarious law created because of cult-like mentality (we've almost gone down that road a few times in the US), rounding up a religious, sexual or racial minority (something this country HAS done), so many other things in the name of the far right or far left... That's insanity!

But anyway... speech should be protected... But whether lawful or not, folks should expect consequences for spewing hateful speech towards anyone... Meaning being banned.

Racist speech is also more than just "n-word" and other similar words towards black and brown (that includes Asians) peoples. Coded language, talking about "go back to Africa" or the "black people are dumb like Chihuahuas/last on the IQ spectrum" type talk, all of which has been said on here and met with bans.

I don't get jiggy with racist rants against white people either. I get the anger some feel because of the history and still-goings-on in this country... But that doesn't mean every white person is evil or racist. Just focus that spiel on whoever perpetuates that vile crap, whether it's racist terms or actual violence... No blanket statements. Same for the reverse towards POC.

Yes but it can have bad consequences because people can react really weirdly. Then people start hesitating to exercise the freedom.

You only need to look any forum, including this, where a perfectly fine comment gets an ridiculously aggressive response.

So technically there is freedom of speech but it is close to become a shouting match where the loudest and the most vulgar gets noticed. For more civilized that may raise a question why even bother?

Evilore.

I wanted to discuss politics with my fellow gamers. :(

There is no free speech and journalism is dead.

Free speech is a protection from your government. It doesn't stop businesses or private individuals from limiting your speech.

No need to apologise. I'm sorry for losing my fucking mind.

They're not my friends, but are my work colleagues that I'm forced to interact with. I was going to a new job, but that fell through, so kinda stuck where I am. When I mean ultra left, I mean some are members of the Communist Party of Britain. After a while, they're views start to rub off on you, which I've really only started to be aware of.

It's strange, because that was never like me. I was always pretty much centre and never swayed into any political ideology. I think I need to take some time off the internet and request to work from home for a while, just for my own sanity. Feel like I'm getting brainwashed in the office.

Mods - please don't ban me for going slightly into political territory. It was only for the above explanation and I'm taking a few days off Gaf anyway. Thanks.

I'm a moderate leftie myself and lost a few friends to the extreme fringes on both sides, so I feel ya. It sucks, we are living in very polarizing times.
Don't be too harsh on yourself. I hope you can clear your head a bit and come back stronger than ever :messenger_bicep:
