Aaaaaaaaand reports from TSN are coming in saying nothing was achieved and the season is basically over.

Season will be saved? :D

blah blah blah
Same crap thats been said in every labour negotiation in the world.

By Monday the players are going to give in to some sort of cap. The deal isnt going to get any better by next year so whats the point of holding out?

Season is a go.. I GUARANTEE IT.

If the deal is $40 million soft cap/$50 million hard cap ... the players are STUPID for not accepting.

The NBA has a soft cap set at $43 million, and the NBA generates 10-20x more revune than the NHL does.

That's just ridiculous. These players really need to understand ... no one gives a sh-t about NHL hockey in the states and there's no reason they should be getting paid even close to what NFL or NBA or MLB players get.

NBA teams also have half the players

And regarding the whole "no progress" business, that could very well be a ploy while they really do get a deal done, but I doubt it

I hope there's no season.
I hope the players get worse proposals from the league with each passing month until they finally break down, only to regret not having signed earlier.
This will level the playing field, make the Canadian teams more competitive, make us worry less about the business side of the game, and generally produce more exciting hockey.

I hope a new deal is signed, and instead of having a tiny season, they should have a huge playoff season with all 30 teams. Imagine 5 months or so of playoff hockey? Good God it would be glorious. All they'd have to do is set up 14 (Chicago and Pittsburgh could play each other for the rights to Sydney Crosby :lol ) playoff brackets using the 2003 - 2004 standings. If they did this, these are some of the first round playoff matches we'd see:

Colorado vs Los Angeles
Dallas vs Minnesota
Calgary vs Edmonton
Boston vs NYRangers
Toronto vs Carolina ROUND 2 :lol

PLEASE Gary, we've waited so long. This is like Groundhog Day. Except it's on Christmas Eve. And we're all 6 year old kids. PLAYOFF HOCKEY WOULD BE THE BEST PRESENT EVER!

Except all the players would be out of shape and out of sync. It would be the worst playoffs ever. Whoever wins would have a massive asterisk next to their Stanley Cup.

All the players? Huh? If they struck a deal now, they could leave all of February open for preperation and conditioning. And even then, there are more players than you think playing overseas or in junior leagues (or just plain keeping their conditioning at level).

If the owners had included true revenue sharing with any of their prior proposals, this shit would've been sorted by Christmas. It's kinda tough to listen to owners talking about the problems they have as a league, yet refusing to help themselves before helping others. It's also tiring hearing people say "well all the other leagues have a cap!", when all the other leagues have at leat some revenue sharing too.

You think pro players just let themselves get out of shape because they're not playing?

In 1994, the 41 games season sucks because everyone was out of hockey shape. Playoffs were a bit better. Yes you can do weight-lifting, you can skate with a University or a Junior team, but you will still be rusted. This year is a bit different, because so many players went to Europe, but you will see a HUGE gap between those players and the Trevor Linden type players who didn't play competitive hockey since last spring.

Anyway, I'm sick and tired of this battle between rich persons, because they don't even care about the fans. Even if this deal is done, the ticket prices won't drop, teams like Phoenix, Carolina and Florida won't die, and there is a very little chance that hockey will be back where it belongs, in Canada (Winnipeg, Québec, Halifax?, etc.).

Four meetings, three cities, and no deals. That sums up the past week in the NHL lockout.

Talks between the NHL and the players' association broke down again Thursday night, leaving the sides still far apart and with no plans to meet again.

``We continue to have significant philosophical differences,'' NHLPA senior director Ted Saskin said Thursday night. ``No meetings are scheduled and we will not make further comment at this time.''

I think players are a lot fitter now then they were even ten years ago. That goes for all sports, and hockey is no exception. If you're not doing at least some sort of workout on a daily basis, your ass is getting left behind.

And I've got news for you...the current brand of NHL hockey sucks dick anyway. Coming back in a rushed state couldn't be any worse then the complete and utter drek that's been put on display the last five years. In fact I'd argue it'd be better...if they get back playing this season, these teams will probably be playing four or five games a week. That means they'd have little time and even less energy to learn complicated, bullshit trap/defensive systems in practices, and you'd have a bunch of teams basically winging it all the way through. In theory anyway.

heres one of the rumors floating around currently:

"The season is slated to start March 1 and and be a thirty game sprint playing every other night mostly against your own division with several home and home series games. The AHL rule changes will be implimented on a trial basis for the regulr season. There will be 1 pre-season game in each arena and the NHL is asking the admission be free to these events, with a donation to go to a charity of the home team's choice."

I was following that site...what a joke. The guy has been exposed as a total attention seeker. Apparently in the past he had great behind the scenes rumours that were totally bogus. At one point he mentioned he was talking to Miroslav Satan's agent...it was then pointed out that Satan has no agent and represented himself. The guy running the blog then went on to say he was "misled" by the guy pretending to be Satan's agent.

Now I ask you, what kind of journalist is this guy that gets hosed by any tom dick or harry?

I followed him through to some Flyer fans message board where this guy has been posting for quite some time. He's been "exposed" so many times it's not even funny. He always comes back with the same defense "these are only rumours and I know that many of them don't come true, I'm only posting what I'm hearing" It got old a long time ago.

Well they are still meeting, have been for 8.5 hours

No further comments or updates by the league tonight

I wonder if they are actually making progress

So is this the same lockout season that never happened or another season of lockout. I don't follow hockey and it seems like this has been going on for ages.

Same season. NHL season starts in September (or October, preseason always messes me up) and the playoffs are usually done by June.

It's ALMOST done. NHL press conference going on right now where they're saying no progress made, NHL has finished their offers and the NHLPA has the weekend to make up their mind. Season should be cancelled on Sunday.
