It looks like Valve's Source engine will soon support Parallax Mapping...

Now, this is nothing like bump mapping in UT 2003/2004 (which had a few classes and admitted that it would have slowed down performance big time)...this seems far more likely to actually occur.

When? I have no idea, but it's interesting nevertheless. All Source needs now is some decent real-time shadows that react to the lightmap and to the light sources in the map...and self shadowing won't hurt either.
 
Only problem is that this wiki page has been up since July...

So it's something they _could_ eventually support, but it's not like we're on the brink of an announcement...

edit: i sent gabe an email asking if it's being actively worked on...
