This is getting discused in the weekly box office thread, but since it's turning into a breakout story, new thread.

Deadline:

The strength of the Stephen King brand just proved itself as the R-rated It‘s Thursday showings delightfully horrified crowds, grabbing hold of $13.5M in previews that began at 7 PM. That means it nabbed the largest horror pre-show gross ever, the largest R-rated preview as well as the largest Sept. preview and the biggest ever for a movie based on a a Stephen King book. And no surprise as it was in 3,500 theaters which is basically the same number of theaters Deadpool had for its full weekend release. Deadpool's preview theaters numbered 2,975.

GAF's resident box office wizard, kswiston:

Some comparisons among the biggest R-Rated openers in the last few years (since Thursday previews became the industry standard)

Code:
TITLE OPENING WKD	THURS PREVIEWS	IT's OW WITH SAME PREVIEWS MULT.
Deadpool $132.4M $12.7M $141M
Logan $89.3M $9.5M $127M
Fifty Shades of Grey	$85.2M $8.6M $134M
Straight Outta Compton	$60.2M $5.0M $163M
22 Jumpstreet $57.1M $5.5M $140M
50 Shades Darker $46.6M $5.7M $110M

The last column lists IT's weekend take if it has the same Thursday previews to full opening weekend multiplier as each of those films. As you can see, there aren't many comparison points, but IT can comfortably have the highest previews frontloading of any of those films and hit $100M.

Tracking earlier this week had it heading for $60m+. It's going to blow past it, mostly likely a ways north of $100m.

Warner Bros ain't screwing around with IT, a killer clown monster, and yet it was Sony that were the complete clowns with their recent Stephen King adaptation.

Considering how many views the trailer had and the good word of mouth it's receiving - not surprised at all. IT's gonna make bank.

I thought it'd do this well considering how well the YouTube trailers did.

Glad the movie seems good, will definitely watch!

It's not gonna make 100m likely, the storm & the playoffs on Sunday will affect it. It could also be frontloaded too. I'd also say 85m+, which would be still a great number.

My earliest showing, at least in Dolby is at 12:30.

That sucks. I really like the early birds on Saturday because they are cheap and I get out of the theater with my entire Saturday still in play. Plus, I bet there are 15-20 mins of previews in front of the 2:15 movie.

I'll just see it Tuesday night or something instead :\

I've been wondering if they're going to be able to do Henry Bowers and Patrick Hockstetter justice, or if the focus will be 90% on the clown. I always thought the fucked up citizens of Derry (who go into wholesale insanity with a little push from It) were the real stars. King's description of them were seriously as hilarious as they were terrifying -- dude had a definite grasp of dark humor.

I wonder how much they can cover in a movie length. It might have been ideal if it could have been a 6-12 episode series with a great team of writers.

IMDB FAQ for the movie lists the combined budget for Part 1 and 2 as $35 million. This would be an incredible return on investment for sure.

You know, even though horror is my favorite film genre, I typically avoid seeing these movies in the theater. I just enjoy horror movies more at home...at night with a max of three other people there.

But I'm seriously considering watching It this weekend. I loved the mini-series back in the 90s. I just hope the audience wouldn't ruin this movie
