It's been a year since COD4 and the maps are still not free.

The only good map is probably the office building one.

The rest, especially Chinatown, are fucking awful.

Viper do you get sniped or rushed alot? Just curious.

My one fatal flaw is explosives, get fucked up by them way more than I should, but the new maps are snipe/rush fests way more than the original ones IMO.

I thought MS had the last say. That's why the Portal expansion cost money though it's free on PC and that's also why L4D extras may cost you money on 360. Newell could be wrong, but he certainly made it seem like MS has final say on content price. Just saying that Activision may have little to do with it.
The Portal game on XBLA is the full game plus extra content. It is NOT an expansion. In fact, it's cheaper on Xbox 360 than on PC.

However, the Team Fortress 2 updates will cost money on 360 and that IS due to Microsoft.

Yup. CoD4 has had TERRIBLE support especially for PS3. We haven't a goddamn playlist update SINCE A MONTH FROM RELEASE! I know Hardcore Team Tactical could be done without a patch too! No trophy patch or rumble patch. That's okay though. What really gets me is that they never fixed the broken party system in the PS3 version. And the host ended game thing. WTF.
And yeah the new maps aren't as good as the originals except Broadcast. That one is awesome.

Not to get to off topic, but can you get the extra content if you own a copy of the Orange Box for 360?

Buy the maps you cheap ass, they're worth every cent.
The game shipped with what? 16 multiplayer maps and an 8-hour single-player campaign for $60.

I've never understood why DLC is so expensive relative to the full retail release. I suppose it's because the people who buy it are only a subset of those who bought the game, but even still... I think I'd prefer them to go about the route of waiting until they have enough content to put out a full stand-alone expansion. That would kill two birds with one stone.

Make it bi-annual with a stand-alone $35 expansion 9-12 months after release? That might be about perfect. For me, at least.

No. But the stuff added is not that big a deal. I'm a PC owner and a huge lover of Portal, but I feel no need to download and play it and it's free for me.

If they'd put it up for 200 or 400 Microsoft points, it might be worth it for you. But it's just a few more challenge rooms. Definitely not worth completely buying Portal again for.

I don't think so. You gotta buy Portal: Still Alive. It's a good deal but if you own Orange Box I say just play that stuff for free when you eventually in your lifetime buy a new PC.

If the maps are free for pc don't they have to become free on the MS marketplace? I thought there was a rule? or does that only count if it's free on something NON Microsoft? :/

if something is worth it to me I will buy it, I brought the first halo 3 map pack but had no need for the 2nd, same with forza 2 I brought the early stuff but not the later car packs.

I believe it's because NVidia sponsored the DLC on PC.

I bought the second halo 3 map pack at the reduced price. They had the cod4 maps on for 1/2 price not too long ago. I dunno, I own the PC version and love the maps.

You're trapped man. You gave microsoft your money to buy into a closed platform and they have you by the balls. This is why I buy on pc when possible. Activision could have the maps sponsered but why would they shift their marketing effort away from WaW?

I don't care about the price of the map pack. I just want NEW maps, and this fucking playlist update that we're waiting for since the first 402 word and his fucking promises.

IW is a really good and talentuous studio, but they totally forget the community.

I'm going to change my avatar. :/

You guys who are really hardcore with your fps games should seriously consider saving for a computer rig. When the pc community latches onto a game, they make sure that shit stays afloat. Community maps, mods, patches, the works; all of which are free.

I have no problem with IW charging for maps and I thought the COD4 pack was excellent, but what surprised me is that such a popular game and a huge cash cow only got one map pack. I bought all three map packs for COD2, which wasn't nearly as popular.

I've been saying this since the start of this gen: DLC is the worst thing ever to happen to gaming. Something that once was free is now extremly pricy. On the other hand we have downloadable games like Wipeout HD and Pixeljunk Eden just to name two of the best titles. These gems cost ~1/5 of a real full price game, which is awesome and they offen have just as much life in them as a full price game. Now they expect users to buy extra content for their games as if it isn't pricy enough? It's just messed up, I can buy Pixeljunk Eden or a mappack for a shooter that actually is free but because MS and Sony just wants your money (I think MS is worst than Sony though).

Luckily I got the COD4 GOTY Edition (PS3)

I actually like Creek, the best new map imo.
China Town is okay if people doesn't stay in the building.
Broadcast is alright. And I don't really like slaughterhouse, too chaotic, you die every 2 seconds.

I also have this annoying "Downoading Settings..." problem.
Can't even play online.
Meh....I'm busy with KZ2 Beta anyway. And when the beta ends I'll start with R2 MP.

COD QUAD has never been anything more than mindless fun put on a pedestal by console gamers who don't know better.

It's been a year and it's time to stop regularly playing "auto-aim at people who will never see me". When fire fights are a rare occurrence you know a shooter isn't worth playing a whole year. It's fun to run up behind people with the overpowered automatic rifles/machine guns(that are mostly identical) but are you really still wanting more of it?

Yes. Why? Because it's more fun than any other online shooter, and therefore I don't care about any of the stuff you're talking about. Remember the fun?

This. x1000. I buy my maps, but it is only when they become free that I can finally play them with randoms. So it is always good for DLC content to go free over time.
legendary maps came out in april and are not free.

I got the maps theyre great. But yes Activision new EA confirmed

i bought them when they was half the price for one week or so and never played an online match since :lol

:)

That's where mods comes into play. Paintball CoD4 is killer.

I like the 4 maps. If you buy the game new, you should get the maps for free now anyway. For those who bought the game early, I agree. The maps should be free right now, unless they're still generating a great amount of revenue where the opportunity cost would not be in their favor.

I was graced with a free copy of the GOTY edition from one of the software engineers at IW.

That says it all. You already have the awnser. Those maps should be still selling at a decent rate, despite being a year old. That's why its not yet free.

Why would anyone expect Activision to give out those maps for free? After all, this is a company that is proud of exploiting their franchises.

ActiBlizz is sadly turning into the new EA.

That's all there really is to it. Their entire strategy with Guitar Hero and Call of Duty is testament to how greedy they've become.

Calling a business "greedy" is retarded.

What's truly amazing is that not all the OGTY editions even come with the map pack. Only the ones with the sticker.

While this thread is about COD4, Resistance 1 has done the same thing, and so has Warhawk. But the problem with Warhawk is that you not only get a new map, but a new vehicle to play with on all the other maps. I imagine this would splinter the community considerably.

For R1 I actually purchased one of the map packs, but whenever I used matchmaking I would never play on them because so few people had the dlc. I had to go into shitty shotgun/sniper one-hit-kill custom games just to play on the maps I paid for.

DLC can work in a lot of cases, but at some point the developers need to realize that making something free may actually help their product. Especially a year or more after release.

People actually play COD4.

Being more of a PC Gamer (when it comes to FPS, Strategy games), I just don't believe in paying for extra maps, guns, or any of that garbage. So it doesn't affect me much. It still kinda sucks that they won't throw the millions of people that bought their game a bone.

Tell you the truth though, I don't know who I'm more irritated by. The developers or the people that actually buy the stuff.

For me, its both, and they're on the same level. They're also in a bad place. It is really funny that a game sells millions and they want to continue to sell you maps made by "professional mappers". While on PC, its supposedly sells less, and gets maps made by amateurs downloaded for free from the community and they're better.

From a PC GAFer perspective, you can't help but feel that ignorance has forced this industry to take a step back.

Why the hell is this game still 60 dollars? :lol Didn't even show up once on black friday sales! World at War will probably drop in price first. I don't want that though! I want CoD4!

20 dollars or bust now!

SkySonata said:
You pay 60 fucking bucks for a damn game.....the extra maps better be free.

DLC should be part of the budget of the game development, not set aside from it.

Console gamers will catch on eventually.

Agreed.

I know exactly what you mean. Especially when I tried playing CoD4 ranked matches with friends, it was near impossible because whenever the party leader decides to back out (to choose a different game type), it will sometimes say trying to re-connect with the party and everyone just kind of hangs on a screen. Also, the game doesn't always list your buddies online playing (you have to reset sign on/off PSN to fix that). Sometimes you cannot say no to an invite (only yes). I just got so angry about the problems, I traded my copy in recently. There's no denying the gameplay online is excellent, but the online has so many issues which never got fixed.

As for the map packs, they should be free, but I doubt Activision/IW wants to do that. They should because less people are playing CoD4 now, and to keep a strong community, they need everyone to have the same content IMO.

November 5th 2007 was when COD4 released.

Activision and IW release the first and only map pack for the most popular online game this gen on April 5th 2008 consisting of 4 maps for $10.

One map is from COD2 but reskinned, one map is from the SP and the other 2 are very mediocre maps.

A year later, a new Call Of Duty game is on the shelfs and the COD4 maps are still not free.

Is Activision the new EA?

short answer: yes.

By next february I doubt you would even care about that.

Not sure if you're joking but...

China Town
Creek
Broadcast

and.....

KILLHOUSE (best 1 vs. 1 map)

I was joking. I've played the game pretty much daily since launch, downloaded the maps the hour they went up, and played every day until about last month or so and not a single time did that fourth map every show up in any game type I play. Shit, even Shipment showed up 100X more then that map.

After playing the maps hundreds of times I still don't like them. They are equal to Wet Work to me where if the map isn't vetoed, I'll just back out because I refuse to play on a shitty map. After playing with friends last night I decided I'm just going to delete the maps from my harddrive so that I don't have them come up in rotation again.

Madden is crap. NBA Live is crap.

Hopefully, 2K sports will regain their licenses for NFL and NCAA basketball.

I bought the PC version after the maps were already released. Once figuring out which were the 4 new ones released with this map pack, I felt practically insulted that Activision has the gall to charge for that shit. Killhouse is a random box that any amateur map maker with very little experience could make, and none of the others are noteworthy at all.
