Iwata says he'll resign if shit doesn't get better.

Nintendo announces quite the loss at 18.7 billion Yen and the Wii U is still selling like bottom barrel shit.

Iwata gets promoted.

Ok.

The hinted resignation was only ever for next year. We've known for quite a while that Nintendo would make a loss this year.

hmm this doesn't bode well for nintendo actually getting back to the kind of gaming I want. You know, the kind that will put out a new console that is relevant and has enough games getting released to make the purchase worthwhile.

For real? Haven't read this, must've missed it.

It wasn't a humiliation, but I've read somewhere a guy from Sony Japan (talking about the situation of Japan game industry compared to the west one) saying that now it was their duty to sort things in order for Sony to unveil PS5 in their hometown.

End of off-topic.

Back on track, isn't Iwata just claiming 2 salaries in order to compensate from the salary cut he got from 3DS sluggish launch?
BTW, are they going to get another one, because WiiU situation is probably worse than 3DS was?

Yeah. This is Iwata setting up the procees of moving aside as Nintendo CEO and taking up the NOA post.
I just can't see him take up both roles long term.

This is what seems most logical.
Probably a replacement for him is being chosen at this point and his promotion to NOA is paving the way for the new direction the company wants.

And now, all three regions have their own Satoru. It's a shame they couldn't find another, though, so Iwata has to do double-duty. Still, Satoru regions are best regions.

Because there are no westerners that could possibly be talented or smart enough to do this job. The mighty Iwata will instead do it himself.

So when the WiiU fails to improve, especially outside of Japan, things are going to be doubly on his hands.

At least, Nintendo fanboys will stop blaming a puppet with no power for Nintendo's performance in the US.

Iwata would most likely sooner quit than demoting himself from Worldwide President to NoA CEO. The most likely scenario is this is a temporary position.

His conquest begins.

i'm hoping this means they're going to try and rebuild the american side of things that's gone missing over the last decade. it might help explain the problems with shipping recently if there was a major shakeup behind the scenes. transitions aren't fun.

That's probably the best attitude to take! Who the fuck knows what's gonna happen this next year.

way I see it:

- account system

- more localization efforts

nintendo only needs to make these two things happen this year in order to make this look like the best decision ever

It seems to me that we should have been blaming this Kimishima for the problems at NOA all along, and Nintendo is booting him back to Kyoto to shuffle paperwork while Iwata steps in to clean up his mess.

And as others have said, if things don't improve in North America, we now definitely know who to blame, and it's not Reggie.

I think so too. I suspect this is just a step in consolidating the company into a more modern cohesive structure that operates as one, instead of having different subsidiaries that all cook their own meals.

It's about damn time too. Personally, I'd say this move comes 6 years too late, but we'll see.

Reggie was never to blame, but he's the PR front guy, so obviously he'll take the blame. It's his job to be the public figurehead, and he's a big guy, so he can take the abuse.

Still, the Reggie hate on the net was ridiculous, but so is every cult of personality.

So, the question in the back of my mind: Does this mean they're kinda okay with how NoE is doing? It's felt in the last few years that Nintendo as a whole does have a little more faith in NoE than NoA, and this seems to underline it.

Well, if it doesn't, we can't pin the blame on Reggie anymore. Right????

Well, Reggie's position is unchanged, so if he was responsible before, he's still responsible. If Kimishima was responsible but Reggie got the blame... then that's a bit unfair!

While you are at it Iwata, it wouldn't be a totally bad idea to snipe some talent from other places and open a few more development studios out here in the west (See: Retro Studios).

I also find it hilarious how so many people on here have been calling for his blood, only for him to obtain an additional title to what he has right now.

Yeah, I'm sure Iwata's going to be taking all that free time from his busy day and thinking about strategies on how to succeed better in North America :|

Reads to me like Nintendo is doubling down on being a company heavily centralized in Japan. NOA just an appendage of NCL and all that. Would love nothing more than to be proven wrong on this and see Iwata use his new position to start/buy up several North American development studios, but, somehow I doubt it.

From a glance at how effective they are at getting future games out before the US and in some cases have gotten games in the past that even America didn't get, I think Iwata must think that Shibata and the gang is doing a great job in getting content out.

Even if they weren't satisfied though, I think in general NoA means a lot more in the grander scheme of things if only to reach out to a lot of western developers and third parties who are housed in America. They need them relations.

As a UK citizen, I think NOE has been fantastic recently:

- superb localizations of Xenoblade, Pandora's Tower and Last Story.

- Great deals on 3DS purchases

- Awesome club Nintendo rewards (SNES CC)

- Wide variety of 3DS XL designs and colours.

Even NOE is starting to unify their approach, as they finally took over Austria and Switzerland, to be incorporated into Nintendo Germany (finally full club nintendo memberships, better customer support etc)

I think at the end of this process, Iwata might become CEO of all territories, while Reggie and Shibata might work directly with him as local administrators, cutting out the middle men so to speak and to unify the company line while still having local focused departments.
