Gamestop Pivoting to Trading Cards - CEO "Our Future Isn't in Games"

It's a smart move. The owner's son at my local mom and pop store has slowly been converting more and more of the store's display and shelf space into trading cards (mostly Pokemon). Physical appears to be on its' death throws and we might have one more console generation supporting it.

Agreed.

Consoles will follow PC soon and be digital only.

In terms of Gamestop, as well as trading cards, they should go in on board games and miniature games (40K for example) maybe even models as well, like Tamiya and Airfix.

Makes more sense than physical video games that won't be around in the next decade

I know people like to blame GS for this and that but it's rare a company can survive the vanishing of 60% of their business practically overnight and that is what happened to GS. Imagine if digital console games were not a thing, all the games that get sold, GS would still be doing fine.

That said I went into one of their stores not that long ago to trade in my PS5 and it was just a mess, not clean (when I worked at EB we vacuumed every night), one person working there, line building up, didnt have the stuff they needed, it was horrible. So the company is just really poorly run.

I honestly cannot believe that people are still shopping at Gamestop. Just plain stupid. They treat their employees like garbage, have high rates on their used items, sell used items that are often times in bad shape. It's the prime example of a bad company. I don't understand why anyone would do business with them. They should of closed down years ago. -

That's been my experience as well every time, one person, long lines. Single coverage, which is dangerous in itself, and treating the workers like shit.

Plus their email system is shit. If you unsubscribe from their junk emails, you'll also be unable to receive verification codes or password reset emails, which they don't have the means to fix apparently. So if that happens, they have to close your account and give you a new one. I've had to transfer my Pro account several times already because their backend is jank as hell.

They're asking a lot of GameStop, unfortunately gaming is going digital and GameStop can still hold a retro gaming identity. I traded in a DualShock 4 at GameStop a month ago, and have bought new games from them before (who wants to wait for the mail man?!)

GameStop I actually see surviving

I figured I really should spend my GS credit because whho knows with this company.

Preordered Silent Hill F, Death Stranding 2, and MGS3 Delta. Hopefully I get them!

Why focus on just trading cards and not also the large growth of board games as a whole? Granted, I did not read the article, but board games themselves have been growing greatly in popularity. In my neighborhood alone, there are multiple posts in our neighborhood FB group about hosing games nights and such. Gamestop could still sell used video games, along with board games, table top RPGs and the like. Keeps their name relevant, IMO. I still would not shop there, but I think it would be a better move than just focusing on trading cards.
