I blame the executives who gave him free rein more than I do Snyder these days, but it was his vision that hamstrung the DCEU before it even got started.

Nah I blame that lawyer who was trying to use the heirs to wrestle control of Superman away from DC/WB for himself. Most of the people who worship those movies don't know what was going on back then and how WB literally had a gun to their head in 2011 and absolutely had to get a new Superman movie in production or else risk losing the rights to the character to a scumbag Hollywood lawyer who was exploiting the heirs for his own gain (and tried to do the same to Disney/Marvel afterwards). WB had to get a Superman movie in production and none of the other directors they wanted were available, Snyder was. So he got it. They wanted to give it to Matt Reeves, but he was working on Apes and was more interested in Batman, so WB allowed him to finish his Apes movies and waited on him to reboot Batman - that's how much they wanted him involved with DC.

Most of us, including myself also just wanted to see Henry play the hopeful Superman he's been dying to play.

But no. James Gunn made an extremely selfish move to convince Zaslav (CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery) that the reboot needed to happen now. It looks like DC's only worth managing if it's going to be his vision. I'm incredibly disappointed by this. Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy, who are the heads of Warner Bros. Pictures wanted to continue the Snyder characters and give them one last ride. They're the ones who authorised Cavill's cameo in Black Adam, Ben Affleck's cameo in Aquaman 2 and had scenes shot in the Flash for Clark Kent and Diana to appear. They were even trying to get a Man of Steel 2 developed with Brainiac as the villian. But this has all been canned because of James fucking Gunn.

I would have greenlit Man of Steel 2 (and maybe tried to squeeze in a MoS3) with a final Wonder Woman 3 and Affleck Batman film, and then ended the whole thing in a JL2 (and maybe a JL3). Then reboot away.

Fucking hell, I'm so pissed off. This is how I'm feeling right now.

Look, the fact is the whole damn thing has been such a fucking mess for so many years that they had to start again... and Cavill's a victim of that necessary course of action. The DCEU was divisive from the minute it was born, and the Warner executives just chased the Marvel dollar with zero actual regard for the characters they had.

I have no idea whether Gunn can do a good job or not - or even if he'll actually have the chance, given Warner Bros Discovery's perilous financial position, but it couldn't have gotten much worse.

And the utter failure of Black Adam was the final nail in the coffin.

I mean, I don’t know the in and outs of it all, but it strikes me that the most likely scenario here is that Cavill complained a lot about the changes made to Witcher canon by a bunch of writers who didn’t like the source material, and this is the blow back from that.

I hope he’s going to surround himself with people who fucking love Warhammer, to make sure there’s no repeat.

That's what I hope too. Warhammer has the most interesting Lore. I hope it's HARD R too, since that universe always seemed to be a darker more violent adult Star Wars to me

Sounds like a nightmare. Obviously there was a lot of bad blood going around. They clearly didn't want to adhere to the source material, and he decided to take matters into his own hands. Neither thing was a good idea. Sounds like he's better off out of it completely. And I'll be interested in how he gets on over at Amazon. I would imagine he'll be working more with the Amazon Studios UK guys, who are not as far up their own asses as the US lot.

That seems to be the case for most of these type of shows nowadays. They are just vehicles for people to tell the stories they want to tell. To be fair though, that's exactly what Zach Snyder did as well, hell even Tim Burton. The difference both these people were good story tellers who were able to create a version of the character that worked in the world they created. Sadly it seems that these ladies can't do that with Geralt, since he has a penis.

It cannot be understated how perfect for the role Cavill was. He's got the looks, the build, the attitude, the passion, the acting chops, everything. He was the living embodiment of the character. His portrayal as Superman will go down in film history as the most tragic waste of talent in the Superhero genre. The guy never got his chance to portray the character correctly. I don't blame James Gunn for this decision. I understand they need to do a hard reboot, and it was a tough decision to make. But fuck Warner Bros for their handling of Henry. I hope the next actor to play Superman is good, but I don't think we'll ever see in our lifetimes a better choice to play the role than Henry Cavill was.

As I said earlier in the thread blame The Rock. He was obviously trying to weaponize the Cavill cameo. I feel bad for him but most of this thread points out exactly why the DCEU needs to be blown up. Management wants the universe to pull Marvel numbers. Blowing the whole thing up and getting some new players in there will definitely make people pay attention.

I imagine Gunn is already regretting taking the job. I can only imagine how much bullshit he has to put up with on every single decision he is trying to make.

Yeah the enthusiasm for Gunn is so strange. He’s made one good film (guardians 1). 2 and suicide squad were both mediocre films with no real drama or stakes. Why in the world people think his one not style of film making will work for the entire DCU makes zero sense to me. Going to be another disaster.
