.....wow...just...wow... I grew up on TOS... I actually have my Tivo still record eps and then check to see which eps are on... I actually watched Doohan's Next Gen ep a bit back.... and Encounter at Farpoint comes on pretty regularly too(caught that again recently).

From the CNN article:

When the series ended in 1969, Doohan found himself typecast as Montgomery Scott, the canny engineer with a burr in his voice. In 1973, he complained to his dentist, who advised him: "Jimmy, you're going to be Scotty long after you're dead. If I were you, I'd go with the flow."

"I took his advice," said Doohan, "and since then everything's been just lovely."

Lots of good memories... lots of em....

Oh and F U Star Trek.com for not having anything up yet.... get moving dammit!

That sucks. He seemed like a really nice guy. A story he told on that Trekkie documentary movie about a depressed/suicidal trekkie woman whose life he saved almost had me tear up a bit.

In the movies and TNG, he never looked in shape. He seemed like those uncles who pass away well before their time. I'm surprised he was already 85. Good genes.

:(

don't you haters start mocking my grief

:(

it has to be said:

"Beam me up God"

I liked him. He made me laugh in Star Trek IV, when he didnt know what a mouse was, and he was talking into it, like a mic.

James' death was expected soon. Yes, he has been ill for some time, and earlier this year (I believe) made his official retirement appearance at a Star Trek event.

James Doohan and Nichole Nicholes will always be special in my eyes as genre actors. Unlike the often stormy relationship other Star Trek cast members had with their fame, Doohan and Nicholes always appeared to comprehend what was inspiring to people about the roles they played. In the case of 'Scotty', generations of engineers have looked to Montgomery Scott as the image of the never-say-die man with the wrench. No matter the problem, no matter how insurmountable, there's a way over, around, or through it. Or a really clever hack to achieve the same result.

NO :(

We were just talking about him while driving down to Comic Con on Friday. He was the nicest member of the original cast you could hope to meet :(

I didn't know he was Canadian or that he was injured on d-day. Man what a stud.

I thought he was already dead. :|
That's too bad.

Alright... this is where Paramount Pictures better wake up real, real soon...

This is two down from the original crew...

Here is what they need to do very quickly before Shatner and Nimoy are gone... they need to make a full-blown Star Trek movie with maybe all crews or The Next Generation and Kirk/Spock...

They should do something like The Return, maybe have Kirk reborn with Borg Technology and be a bad guy for part of the movie...

Or create a mirror universe movie with Spock and Kirk as the bad guys trying to re-claim some youth by destroying the "good" universe...

They could make a movie that will take in more $$$ than any other Trek movie... DAMN THEM!

No...just no. Shatner did that in the Trek books he "wrote".

Kirk died n Star Trek Generations

I know he died... maybe have the Borg go to the mountain and resurrect him from the dead... have mirror Kirk/Spock show up and have "good" Spock join up with Picard and crew and go back to the Nexus and save Kirk again...

Remember, time does not exist in the Nexus??? Right??? Maybe they could go back into the Nexus and save him again????

Sad news indeed, even if it was expected. He's been battling illness for years now. :( Scotty was one of the past parts in TOS, if not the entire Star Trek Universe. He shall be missed.

Mr. Scott, the Word is given. :(

I know, I know... that is why I referenced his book the Return... film that... or something similar...

I didn't read any of his other books, but I think the "evil" Kirk came back too...

Have Q do something by bringing all captains together to save the universe... because always felt humans were going somewhere... but we had to wait...

Star Trek XII: So Very Tired

But are books considered "bible" or whatever they say... oh canon?

No, they died in DS9. Kirk was killed and then Spock tried to turn the Mirror Universe around and he was then killed.

It comes in threes. Look out, Shatner. Or maybe the guy that plays C-3PO or something. If you've ever been in sci-fi you'd better watch your back.

Back To Mr. Doohan....

It's sad to hear of his passing. Some interesting facts I've learned today:

1) Last year, Doohan was given his own star on the Walk of Fame. In fact, here's a very touching video from all his family that was made just after they learned of him getting the star: family.mov.

2) The little girl in the above video is his 5 year old daughter. That's right, James Doohan fathered a daughter when he was 80 years old!

3) He was shot six times by Nazi's during WWII and was on the beach on D-Day.

4) He was only in one other television program, ironically another space show that aired a few years before Star Trek.

5) He was a talented voice actor and had several good accents. It was his suggestion to make Scotty Scottish.

6) But most important of all... from everything I've been reading today he was a great man who never, ever, ever gave any fan the cold shoulder, even though he was part of one of the biggest fandoms ever. He even once help save a suicidal fan by talking personally with him and urging him to hold on to life. They worked out a relationship where by Doohan would always check to see if the boy was at a convention and he always showed up. One year, the boy didn't show up and Doohan became very worried that he may have taken his life. But he later learned that in fact, the boy had turned his life around and even became an engineer!

That's pretty awesome.

That's the story I was referring to, although it was a woman, not a boy. And he found out, I believe, several years later when she showed up at another convention and told him herself. Yeah, that was a touching story.
