JANUARY 2005 HARDWARE NUMBERS THREAD [Jesus have mercy]

Nice. The PS2's library is better than the Xbox and GC's combined, so it deserves to sell more than both. :) I do believe this calls for a rousing dance of the banana.

It really calls for the famous "Pimp Smooth Kutaragi" pic.

Expected. In January, PSTwo's were fully restocked while Xboxes were still VERY scarce. I'm surprised it managed to sell that well. Once Xbox gets restocked, expect a big jump because the demand is there.

Oh shut the fuck up. NYC had Xboxes up the ass in January. Yet PSTwos were still hard to come by in stacks.

There were some predictions that MS would outsell Sony again this month... I think there were some counter predictions but I don't think any predicted a 2x gap between #1 and #2.

Hardware numbers are hard as hell with the shortages, so what the heck...

GBA 280k
PS2 380k (I think it had much better availability, but still a shortage)
XBX 210k (I think it was damn near impossible to find)
GC 120k
DS 130k (Hell, I don't know. We have no numbers for Dec. They were readily available)

sonycowboy said:
I'm just optimistic that the PS2 actually had some units to sell. Look at the past January's. The PS2 would sell very well if it were in stock. And, to that, add in the pent up demand for the new hardware revision. Basically, PS2 & Xbox sold as many units as were out there. The question really is, how many units were shipped?

I was quite close to that. I would have predicted more if I thought that there would actually be that much supply out there. I knew it was MUCH MUCH better than some of the other months in terms of getting supply, but it was still always sold out, so I kept it a bit lower.

Also, that number isn't as insane as many people think.

PS2
Jan-01 248,052 ($299, but supply constrained after launch)
Jan-02 360,745 ($299)
Jan-03 448,000 ($199)
Jan-04 338,000 ($179)
Jan-05 488,000 ($149)

YOY numbers

PS2: 488,000 (+44% from last January)
Xbox: 241,000 (+25% from last January)
Gamecube: 114,000 (-15% from last January)

It's all about the MOMENTUM. :lol

500K sold for January. O_o

I guess Sony put its competition back in their place in January with the hardware shortages over.

As for PS2 systems, I've seen plenty of the PSTwos in stock now. Not many Xboxen though.

I would say demand aligned with supply, rather than Sony made more systems. They sold less than 1/2 what they did in December, and there were shortages for a while then. Even if they shipped fewer units, the December-January drop in demand would leave enough units out there.

Early predictions for this month?

Sony paid out the ass to have units airlifted in for December. The "Suez" canal crisis seems to have abated.

I still think there is ALOT more demand than supply currently. And, as I said earlier, I expect extraordinary February sales.

1) Nothing "official" from me yet, but I might top 600-650k :O :O Traditionally, February has been an even bigger month than January (look at my hardware chart in the Jan prediction thread). That is making the assumption that Sony still has a significant backlog of demand that wasn't satisfied by Januarys sales. I might alter it based on my channel checks and any PR's that come out the rest of this month (February's not even over.

2) You know, we're going to get that last phrase on Mike's banned list. :lol

Is Sony fucking relentless or what? The thing is, they still have SO many moves they could make with the PSTwo it's ridiculous. Drop to $130. Drop to $100. Bundles. Promotions. New games coming out. Etc, etc, etc. Fuck just go ahead and delay the PS3 to 2007 or 2008.

And is Nintendo now so fucked or what? They cannibalize their best selling system in history, the Game Boy, with the DS .. which subsequently is going to get stomped by the PSP. And there's barely any noteworthy releases coming out for the Game Boy or DS the first half of the year - and the GBA is practically dead with releases period.

And then, to top it all off, the biggest two games Nintendo has on tap for the first half of the year require BONGO DRUMS to play? Oh man, they really know how to fuck theirselves over huh?

I did :D (used one)

Btw, these #'s were totally expected by anyone in the biz or close to the biz. Sony did a good job at getting their PSTwo's to major retailers in January while Microsoft did an abysmal job. Just take a look at Ebay or other auction/resell sites and see how much Xboxes are going for vs. PSTwo's for proof of the stock levels.

If MS could get Xboxes back into circulation this month, then things should return to parity. The crystal Xbox will do well to combat the PSTwo if it's ever released.

Nintend not Capcom. Donkey Konga 3 is coming out along with Jungle Beat. There's your two big first half released from the big N.

starfox was meant to be big you know. (and yes it's a nintendo franchise even though namco made it)

Starfox Assault is probably bigger than both of the bongo games.

Of course, the "early rental" thing with Starfox is probably going to kill the sales.

Sometimes I don't really understand why the GC is doing so poor. Yes I admit that PS2 and Xbox have better features such as a DVD, large 3rd party support etc but still.

- The cube is cheap than the competition.
- It's a powerful console for its price.
- And yes it has a library of good games.
- Nintendos 1st party games are worth owning a cube for.

Somehow Nintendo screwed up really bad because I believe the cube has better potential than it's current numbers show.

Ok it screwed up against its competition, because I know Nintnendo is still profitable, yadda yadda and all that.

CAN YOU FEEL THE MOMENTUM, XBOX FANS?

Seriously, the moment Reggie said "momentum" and then Gates & Co. repeated it it became a stupid marketing word.

Santa: It's kiddy. If Nintendo had more games like RE/ED/MGS the sales would be better. I dont think people here gets drawn to games like Mario Sunshine, Pikmin, Kirby etc :lol

Just speculating :)

It's in the "toy" like image again. Nintendo could reclaim significant marketshare if they retreated from that area - The NES in particular sold so well because it was, for the time, sleek and cool. Somewhere along the line Nintendo decided that they'd rather be unique and quirky than mount a serious challenge for market leadership. They could definitely have a bigger hit with their next console if they played it the right way, but I suspect they won't.

Wow. But um...why? I mean, the PS2 has gotten a ton of great releases, but Ps2 owners, as usual, aren't buying any of them...at all.

Just speculating :)

if GC is so kiddy, why don't the causuals (causual families) buy more of it? :) At this point I don't even think the GC has the kiddy audience. Only the hardcore fanbase.

That's debatable. I have both systems, and while I do want to play a number of PS2 games, I've never been without a high quality release.

???

Huh?

Why is it then that:

1) The PS2 has the highest tie ratio of all systems
2) The PS2 has the highest sales/title by a factor of over 2 times despite having a good bit more titles than any other sytem.

You might be trying to say that some multiplatform games are selling as well on Xbox, but those specific examples are less than 1% of titles out there and don't consider the fact that there are more exclusives on the PSs than any other system.

Its laughable, its downright hilarious, when you think about it. Its like Sony told MS, we'll let you guys have a good run and let you keep that momentum and said "SIKE".

As for Nintendo they said "whatever".

Nintendo probably saying damn, those Refurbed GC are dent in our plans. Maybe we'll get more software sales.

Cause the kiddy market has decreased a lot nowadays. Maybe its 7, 8 and under now. I don't know any kids anymore in middle school going 'hey you get that new donkey knoga game?' 'oh what about that new pokemon?'. Fuck, even the kids nowadays are playing Grand Theft Auto and shit, they don't wanna play no Pokemon and shit. It's pretty damn bad when you've suddenly become uncool to 10 year olds. Then at the same time you don't realize the only ones buying the system like you said, are the hardcore Nintendo fans, and then they alienate them by trying to capture a market thats not even there anymore by dumbing down their franchises.

That's my take.

To put things in perspective and really understand this PS2 shortage problem, look at this:

Last year two months frame: Dec2003+Jan2004 (1,940,000+338,000) = 2,278,000

This year: Dec2004+Jan2005 (993,000+488,000) = 1,481,000

A drop of 35%!

I agree, the arrogance that exsisted in Nintendo may be gone now that Yamauchi is gone. Its obvious the hardcore fans are picky when it comes to games.

Are we looking at the same PS2 lists? True PS2 exclusives aren't selling. I'll say it again. There are a ton of great PS2 games being released

1) Katamari Damacy
2) Metal Gear Solid 3
3) Jak 3
4) Ratchet and Clank 3
5) Shadow Hearts
6) etc.

Show me these PS2 exclusives that are selling so well. GTASA isn't an exclusive, at least not to most Xboxers. They're told in the stores that it's coming out for their system.

How you can take this as a knock on the PS2 is beyond my ability to understand, but it's as clear as day. PS2 owners will buy Madden over almost any PS2 exclusive, any day of the week.

Saying that the PS2 is better than the Xbox or GC doesn't mean the Xbox and GC aren't great consoles themselves. Because they are, and I love both of em. They just aren't nearly as good as the PS2, imo.

its just going to get even tougher for 3rd parties on the Revolution, cause as the Nintendo userbase continues to dwindle its just going to be left with a more and more hardcore Nintendo fanbase

I think you're confused. PS2 exclusives listed above are selling. Quite well (Shadow Hearts excepted). Are you saying that they aren't selling multimillions? That's true. So what? They're still selling extremely well and the competition on the PS2 side is absolutely brutal, especially considering the huge "casual" base and the over 500 titles that retail for less than $20 nowadays.

But have you seen the million sellers lists (or even the over 500K lists) I post? They are completely one-sided to the PS2.

I see the argument you're trying to make, but it's completely wrong.
