A new year, and new scores from the popular men's magazine.

Scores: (out of 5 stars)

Resident Evil 4 (GC) = 5
NFL Street 2 (PS2/Xbox/GC) = 4
Gran Turismo 4 (PS2) = 5
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 2 (PS2/Xbox/GC/PC) = 4
Virtua Quest (PS2/GC) = 2
Mercenaries (PS2/Xbox) = 4

FYI, the smokin' hot Eva Longoria from Desperate Housewives is on the cover (and featured) in the issue.

I bet they just read the PR info that they receive and give a review off of that, seeing that they sometimes 'review' games that don't even come out for another 5 months

Well, these scores are certainly credible.

They could be! What are you laughing at? You don't know who's freelancing the articles...

Reading reviews from a mainstream mag like Maxim is stupid enough, but the fact that really propels such behaviour to a new level of stupidity is the opportunity cost of flipping a couple of pages to look at them boobies instead.

I just can't force myself to put any stock into a score given to a video game by a publication that isn't really video game press.

I'm not so sure it's a kids game. It did get a teen rating from the ESRB, for what that's worth. In either case, Maxim's opinion on it means jack. "Where's all the titties, guns, and sportsballs? 2 out of 5."

I agree that Maxim's opinion means nothing. Dunno why it got a T, but Gaming-Age said it's a kids game:

Virtua Quest is definitely a title aimed at kids. The battle system is solid and easy to use, but it's still up in the air as to whether anybody over the age of 12 will like it.

Here is the GT4 review:

If 650 different cars from 80 manufacturers on 100 separate tracks aren't enough play value for you, try cruising Times Square in a turn-of-the-century steam engine.

That's the entire thing.

Half of the reviews read like shoddy writers regurgitating press releases for a preview piece, not a review. And as someone who used to get paid to do just that, I can spot it rather easily.

Holy shit, they reviewed the GT4 ad in their magazine. >:( ...and what the hell does that steam engine reference mean???

Exactly right. Except that they don't read the PR info either. They are shown various bits of gameplay and video and write the "review" based on a 10 minute presentation.

Why do people bother to post scores from Maxim? At least half of their reviews seem to appear before review copies have actually been sent out. Like RE4 -- GMR has the exclusive for their final issue, so they couldn't have actually reviewed it.

That GT4 review is piss and shit. I should infiltrate Maxim's office and steal the damn thing. Then make copies of for the deserving like Gek and SSX.

I was at the last GT4 media tour in NYC and played the game along side a writer for Maxim. So at least I can say someone from the mag did actually touched the game at least once...

Maxim rating process:

<jimbo> What's the next game called?

<anna> Resident Evil 4

<jimbo> Oh it has "evil" in it, sounds scary, plus it's the 4th in the series, it must be good, give it a 5. What's next?

<anna> Virtua Quest

<jimbo> Well, I like how they removed the "L" in Virtual, it gives it an edge, so it gets a point there. The "Quest" part has me worried, sounds like I need to use my .. uhh.. what's that body part i use to think again?

<anna> The heart?

<jimbo> That's it, thanks anna, what would I do without you?
