All I got for the Vernal Equinox was this stupid tag
I can't believe this. I'd pretty much given up all hope of getting into the JET program this year, even telling my parents yesterday that it was time to start applying for other similar jobs, and what do you know? They called me up today. :)

I'll be leaving in mid-August; not sure where I'm being placed yet, but I cannot wait. Even better, I can finally leave the crappy stress-filled job I have now. :D

Thanks guys. :D

Congradulations man!!!

does this mean no more lag-free DOA:U?

I'll still be in shitty Atlanta for another month or so, plus I'll definitely be getting high speed internet when I'm over there for sure. I suppose whether or not I'll have the time to play on Live is a different story though. :)

Congrats!

I'm going to be applying in the fall. I really don't think I can take much more of my current job.

I hear you. I was going to quit my current job at the end of this month anyway, but getting upgraded just sealed the deal. I'm going to give them my two weeks probably on monday, and I'm almost hoping they tell me to just go ahead and leave. :)

Heh, yesterday, I was trying to devise a way I could either burn or bomb my office without being caught...anything to avoid having to get up today and go sit in a cubicle. :)

Was the overall JET process stressful? I hear they can ask some pretty off-the-wall questions in the interview.

Wow, I didn't know you could get called so late. That's fuckin' awesome though. Congrats.

My one friend is leaving soon for it, and I'm pretty confident that if she got in, I have a decent chance. I just have to, you know, graduate.

Congratulations! Don't forget to write once you've had a ride on the Shinkansen! I would drool for the chance to ride on one of those trains. One day...

It can be pretty expensive, though. I just hope the Shinkansen isn't like the trains in Tokyo and you're like a sardine in a can. :)

Thanks! Yeah, when they told me I was an alternate, the letter said that they can call you up through October(!), but from what I've read, if you don't get called up by August, it's pretty much not happening.

My one friend is leaving soon for it, and I'm pretty confident that if she got in, I have a decent chance. I just have to, you know, graduate.

I decided I was going to go a few years back when the worst guy in our Japanese class (he missed classes, couldn't do the homework without cheating, etc.) applied and still got what had to be a good letter of recommendation from our teacher. After he was accepted, I figured anyone could go. Then two more classmates went last year, with one of them being in the same situation I was in; he got called up right at the end of last July. When I got picked as an alternate, I pretty much put all hope into having a situation like his, and that's what happened.

Part of me wants to come in when the boss is here, knock over all the magazine and game racks, throw a hammer at the computer screen, point to anyone in the store, and say "fuck you, fuck you, you're cool, fuck you...I'm out!" :lol I told them I'd be willing to work until the end of this month; I have no idea what's going to happen though. The place is doing badly so I really wouldn't be surprised if they tell me tomorrow or by Monday to stop coming in...

...which I wouldn't mind at all. :D

Was the overall JET process stressful? I hear they can ask some pretty off-the-wall questions in the interview.

Definitely stressful, but it was also my first actual job interview, so there was even more stress for me. My teacher was there as an interviewer (too bad your teacher can't interview you or everyone would get in!), and she pulled me aside and told me a ton of stuff that I should say should they ask me. Turns out they didn't ask me ONE of the questions she was telling me to prepare for! They gave me a lot of basic questions; I sat up straight, kept smiling, and did my best, but I know they knew how nervous I was because one guy kept saying "it's almost over, relax!"

I think I got picked as alternate because of the main interviewer (you have three people interviewing you). He started by asking me about my Asian Studies major, and I had a bit of a hard time recalling some names from the Meiji era; what I learned was less about names and more about events. I also goofed when they asked me to do a mock lesson; they let me do it again and they seemed to really like it, but I'm sure that lost me a point or two. Also I couldn't seem to come up with a good answer for a book I'd reccomend for the kids to read. When I think about it, I probably should just have said "Harry Potter." ^_^;

From what I've been told, being picked as an alternate basically means you missed getting chosen by a small amount; it could have just been one point or half a point off that made you miss getting hired right then and there.

The most stressful part of this whole experience was the wait; my interview was back in February. Then there was a month wait just to find out my interview results, and then months of waiting until now to see if I'd get called up! It felt like I wasn't able to really do much of anything; couldn't plan ahead and didn't want to apply for another job in case they did call me up.

Get ready to sweat your ass off - August-September is BRUTALLY humid in Japan.

That's okay; I'm pretty used to that with the way the weather is here in Atlanta. I've been to Japan twice before in the summertime, and the climate felt pretty much the same.

Leguna told me about the decision. CONGRATULATION. Although it sucks complete ass that now YOU and yuji are in Japan! :p

Though now we know 2 people in japan! Yes! Be sure to get in contact with Yuji!

Japan Exchange and Teaching program. Basically, you go to Japan as either a full English teacher (CIR) or as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT), which is what I'm going to be. The program is government-sponsored; pay sounds pretty good considering that they give you housing and in some cases a car too.

Placement is pretty random it seems; I don't know where I'm going to be. I don't really care where I end up, but I would prefer someplace warm. :)

When you say you can be placed anywhere...anywhere in the whole country? As in you might not even be situated in Tokyo! Also, was the pay like? :)

Some JET programs are in the super-boondocks. Make sure you're in an area where you can at least get a burger once in a while. Otherwise you could be eating cooked fish and a raw egg for breakfast every morning...

:lol Sorry. :) But you guys can always come visit me. You'll probably have the sleeping space the size of a closet, but if you can manage that it might not be too bad. ;)

Though now we know 2 people in japan! Yes! Be sure to get in contact with Yuji!

I need his e-mail address! I keep forgetting to get it from you guys. Birdo tells me he's supposed to be coming back to Atlanta in a little over a week, BTW.

Are you going with Vito to Columbus this weekend? I was thinking of going.

Oh, there's no way I'll be placed in Tokyo. I doubt I'll even be in a big city, but you never know. I'm really glad I was living there briefly last year, since I'll be able to get around without any problem now. Might have to hit up Akihabara for the umpteenth time once I get there.

AFAIK the pay is somewhere between $30,000-$35,000 a year, and they're supposed to give you free housing. I'm not sure about what utilities need to be paid for.

Tons of people do this every year from NZ, apparently there is another competing one to the JET program, they all seem to come back rich as fuck as well. Congratulations. I'm hitting my big destination mid august as well, exciting stuff ay? Mines made all the more exciting by not having a job to go to though :(

I need to do a few open studies classes and get in on the JET program. I went to japan for a mere 2 weeks last year and wished I could have stayed there the entire 3 months the tourist visa allows. That was atleast 90% due to it being a holiday , so for 15 days I didnt' have to work once.

It's the whole "stuck in the boondocks" thing I'm a bit worried about though, sure Tokyo and Osaka/Kyoto are expensive cities but there's so much to see and do there. I think it'd suck if you went over there and got stuck in Hokkaido. Have fun nevertheless.

Best of luck Lyte, have a blast in the Land of the Rising Sun. Be sure to pay Blackace a visit, he seems like a friendly fellow. Just be sure to say only good things about Bob Sapp, or he may have to choke a bitch.

Oh, I met him last year, on his birthday as I recall. :) I also met Sho Nuff, DCharlie, Bebpo, Cormacoroni, Yellowace, Johnnyram, Reno, and saw John TV for like 10 seconds. Most of the Tokyo GAFFERs, I think. All were a great bunch of guys.

Sounds nice! Do you need to speak Japanese? My Japanese skills suck so much and English is not enough in Japan (at least outside Tokyo). I'd really like to do this after I graduate. Do you have any links regarding that JET stuff? thx

Congratulations! I plan on applying next year, I hope to have such good luck! I'd like to hear updates and see pictures, if you have the time or urge. :)

heh, beware. Over 50% of the JETs in our prefecture are leaving which is the biggest exodus out of Aomori since JET started here.

At least I already know my replacement so you're safe from the torture of living in my PoS shack ;P

At least the apples are tasty and the girls next door in Akita are beautiful...

DON'T HANG OUT WITH OTHER GAF LOSERS IN JAPAN!

Oh, and congratulations. See you in Aki again once of these days.

The apples are good, but I wouldn't really call Akita "next door" unless driving 3+ hours on highways that'll charge you almost $40 one way counts as next door ;)

Congrats Lyte!

You'll have to get yourself over to Tokyo at some point.
We can treat you to another show of idiocy ...

Congratulations, dude. That is damned awesome. I hope you have an excellent time as a JET.

What's the cutoff for that? It's some number of years after you get your bachelor's degree, right?

I will make the best of anywhere I'm placed, but I am really hoping for a warmer climate. :)

I don't know; the south would be okay because of the hot weather, but I'd really prefer NOT to be far north. :)

No, I don't believe you have to know any Japanese to go into the program, but it will obviously help. I took four years of Japanese classes, but I'd say I suck at it pretty badly, too...I think being there will help a lot. It's time start studying again since I haven't cracked a book since graduating seven months ago...

If I got in, ANYONE can get in. :lol I definitely plan on taking LOTS pics; maybe even keeping a stupid blog or something. Last time I was in Japan for a month, and really didn't take many pictures. Need to make up for that now.

Thanks! I don't know what the cutoff is, but I remember seeing an applicant at the interview that was at least 10 years older than everyone else (early-mid 20s) there.

Congrats!

I just hope JET don't post you somewhere too rural. Do you have any control over where you end up?

After lots of visits there, from September I'll be living in Japan too, switching between Osaka and Tokyo every few weeks (trying to not end up with an Osakaben accent

You're damn right about a camera! Keep a log, take as many photos as you can, make a video diary if you have enough space on an SDCard... you'll really appreciate your efforts in a few years time when it's all a distant memory!

Not yet. I need to get a lot of anime crap, get an import tuner car and do drift races, and then marry a Japanese girl first. Am I missing anything else that needs to be added to the list?

Heh, no, sorry. I think I'd look REALLY weird with blonde hair. :) But I am going to try for a "make over" look before I leave. New haircut, all new threads, etc. I can't handle contacts, but I will likely get some new glasses too.

Nope, but I don't mind rural. I want to be immersed in the culture and away from where there would be more English speakers so I can pick up the language better. I think I asked for someplace more suburban and less rural, but as an alternate, it's pretty much just taking whatever they give me.

Well, I hope to use JET as a springboard for a job that would allow me to live in Japan like some of the other GAFfers here. :) Not really sure what else besides English teaching would open up, though.

You might be getting my placement, hopefully! I live in suburban Osaka... but I bailed out of my recontracting for a second year because I got a game industry job. My school has no idea when they will be getting a jet; other than it will assuredly be a group C or later alternate.

JET Springboard baby.... jump on that bitch.

Oh, I wasn't talking about language exposure... I got stuck in a remote tiny village for 24 hours a couple of years back (long story). Met a guy from Oz who lived there, he had been with JET for about 6 months, but he was just totally bored and the nearest city was miles and miles away. Although, I guess some people people like the peace and tranquility... not me (or him). Each to his own.

Time will tell, after a whole year in Japan you'll know what your abilities can do for for you!

Congrats. I have a friend that is just about to end his JET tour of duty over there.

I should go back to studying Japanese, he and I actually first met in JPN 101. He followed through and got to into JET (found a gf over there, too), and I dropped out and am leading a excruciatingly uneventful life. :(

Congrats. Ruzbeh am jealous!

So, are you, like afraid that you're going to look out of place in Japan? Like, that seems kinda scary for me anyway. All these Japanese people... and then... YOU! MISTER NOT-JAPANESE!

I'm very pleased to see you made it. It would have broken my heart if you didn't make it after all your enthusiasm. Enjoy your experience; I hope to be a JET one day too. :D

What's the deal with JET if you have a fiancé/spouse/significant other? Is it just expected that you leave them behind, or can you make preparations to take them with you?
