I think I mentioned this before, but they have lost me on Zankyou Reference. I am not coming to ONE OK ROCK for their polish and remarkable production value. Niche Syndrome was one of my favourite album of that year (and even of decade) and I still listen to it to this day. It is one of the few albums that I can not say a single bad thing about because I thought it was perfect. It was perfect blend of hardcore punk, some noise and Emo without making them overbearing of their effect, their structure was also quite sound, and I even thought some tracks such as Liar and Jibun Rock, never overstayed their welcome while being catchy at the same time. Their lyrics were fun and innocent as well as nonsensical and stupid (in a good way), their ,also, lower production value made it look more honest and even brought some hidden sound effects such as noise and distortion which is welcome. That album was the definition of fun. You knew they had fun making it and it was just fun listening to it.

They took themselves seriously in their later 2 albums, While Zankyou reference had some tracks that were good and reminiscing of their previous album (such NO SCARRED and RE;make) they just became too edgy for their own good and try to hard to impress with their super emotional lyrical composition (which turned them more Emo) like in CHAOSMYTH and later in songs such as Clock Strikes and The Beginning made them completely Emo and started reminding me of bands such Bullet my Valentine and Paramore. While other songs such as 69 and Deeper Deeper reeks of a pathetic attempt of being Edgy. Polish ain't doing anything for me if the base is rubbish.

You are going to certainly argue with me, but that is my two cents and this is just a personal opinion and I certainly don't begrudge anyone for liking them (I have seen worse opinions) But yeah, Old ONE OK ROCK is good enough for me. The polish and change in tone doesn't resonate with me.

I don't know, you just do that all the time, for some reason.

Anyway, I have recommended a friend of mine to Listen to Lite since they are coming to UK for a tour and he can't stop listening to them. Now he asks me about other Japanese bands Lol

The lack of T H E on these lists is depressing.

I started listening to J-Music only this year (thanks to all of you guys), but my top releases for this year are:

1. T H E - tricot
2. LEVEL 3 - Perfume
3. DOPPEL - KANA-BOON
4. Munimuni no ki - Arukara
5. Wonderland - HaKU
6. sakanaction - Sakanaction
7. CAPS LOCK - capsule
8. 5 - Negoto

And holy shit, I just discovered there's a new indigo jam unit album.

Good. Convert more!!

You know, I used to listen to LITE and toe, but eventually I grew tired of them. However, yesterday I was reminded of LITE and went to listen to them again, and it's so good, I might go back.

3. DOPPEL - KANA-BOON

Truly my favorite band I discovered this year.
Their EP released earlier this year was already pretty good, and the album confirmed that they're extremely talented. Looking forward to their future releases.

The other artists I discovered this year that made me go "WOW" are the chef cooks me, Hoshino Gen and Takahashi Yu. I'm usually not a fan of solo artists so these two were huge surprises.

I still haven't listened to them :(

Lol, I am the worst person to ask about Japanese music (or even music in general) I don't know how to recommend. Lol

Does anyone know whether AKFGs albums are out in the west and are there any compilations worth to get? Don't they have billion albums already? I wouldn't mind take the best and just start listen to them?

Are they still good?

I, like faridmon have not listened to everything enough, though, so I don't feel confident. I am leaving stuff out for sure... I don't think of music as releasing by year, so this is going to be difficult. Here's some stuff that I remember sticking out for me. I'm not going to rank them. With the different genres I listen to, ranking them doesn't make sense to me.
Indie:
Tricot - The
Sakanaction - Sakanaction
Haruka to Miyuki - Cyano Type
[Champagne] - Me No Do Karate
The Milky Tangerine - sympacity
Gesu no Kiwami Otome. - Odorenainara, Gesu ni Natte Shimaeyo
the cabs - Regenerative Landscape
Wakusei Abnormal - Nandemonai Kyoki
Kinoko Teikoku - eureka
la la larks - That one little CD they gave me with only one song on it.

Visual Kei and Metal
Jupiter - Classical Element
Galneryus - The Ironhearted Flag Vol.1 and Vol.2: Reformation Side
Mucc - Shangri-La
Sadie - MADRIGAL de MARIA
Various Artists (mostly, DaizyStripper's and A's songs) - V-ANIME ROCKS evolution

Electronic
Capsule - CAPS LOCK (except 12345678's incessant car horn. Ghhghgughg)

Hip-Hop
Ketsumeishi - Tsuki to Taiyou
RE:plus - Relax & Smooth presented by Folklove
Sky-Hi - Ai bloom / Rule

Jazz and Ska
Soil & "Pimp" Sessions - Circles
Kemuri - All For This!
Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra - Diamond In Your Heart

Pop
Momoiro Clover Z - Guonn (I love Guonn so much. That bass is so sexy.)

Where are all the Electronic and Hip-Hop albums? My favorite producers and rappers didn't release much... (besides Nakata, dayummm). Surely, just like this year, I will be playing catchup next year and finding a bunch of stuff that I missed!

faridmon, give me that Head on the Sofa album! D:

I'll have to disagree with some of you. Indie is a genre, but its not any of the other labels mentioned above. We did have a thread about it and whether we can have an indie as genre.

Indie can be labelled with music that uses minimal guitar string plays in order to bring melodies into play. Base is normally in the background while they usually have a lo-fi, yet clear vocals. They usually involve catchy and repetitive guitar riffs that are usually danceable and have an independent sense of voice to it.

Think of bands such as Franz Ferdinand, The Strokes, The National, Kasabian and Modest Mouse and you can see a similar element that creeps into their music. IN Japanese terms, Asian-Kungfu Generations, The Mirraz, Fujifabric, Kururi, Bump of Chicken and see what they have in common

Here is what I said in that other thread

I disagree. Label have a lot to do with it, yes, but There is definitely something that can be recognised as an ''indie sound'', heck, there are a lot of Metal bands that are part of an indie label and I wouldn't call them indie bands.

Alternative is a genre as well as being an underground act.

I think I am gonna start from the first two mini-albums of Asian Kungfu Generations and go from there.
I do remember enjoying Solfa back in the day.

Maybe I would be less bothered if it had a different name.

Yeah agree, it should had its own name, since it does get confusing, but again music genre is a confusing mess these days. Progressive rock doesn't mean anything prog at all and Alternative rock is a mess by its own.

Not o mention the confusion of the whole pop rock genre, its all messed up.

AlabastreAizo, have you tried the new Girugamesh album? from what little I have listened to it, It seems to be alright Visual Kei album.

I miss the old Girugamesh :(

I'll check it out. I really don't listen to much Visual Kei anymore.
I saw Jupiter live two nights ago, but I can't really think of any other Visual Kei bands I would want to see live since Jupiter is the only one I follow anymore. I just tend to listen to the new stuff whenever I go to Tower Records. Maybe I'd see A or DaizyStripper... Hmm.

Fair enough. From the way you spoke, I just assumed that you are into Visual Kei, since you are pretty much the only person who actually talks about it.
I do have few VK I am into, mostly dates back to my Sixth Forms(college in america) days. Some of them I still listen to them sometimes.

One Record I would really recommend would be a band that is called Sel'm. I don't know if you heard about them, but the main vocalist used to be the vocalist of Girugamesh and left when Girugamesh decided to go to their horribly misguided pop rock/ emo route. Sel'm Kind of offers a very hard rocking, consistent melodies that many VK bands can't seem to grasp without having a forced emotional strings of howlings. They are quite funky as well which is quite surprising.

I especially like their older singles (although I do think their newer stuff is good)

Just listened to 80kidz new EP "80:03." Just like their last one, I don't like it. What happened to them? This isn't solid Electro House anymore. It's not even Prog. House. It's just... really repetitive, boring House. I love all their albums, but this 80:__ series is pretty lame.

Thank you for the recs! I hope to check 'em out when I wake up. I kinda want to get into V Kei again.
Check out DaizyStripper's last release. I think they're a solid group. This release is damn catchy.
Derringer

Edit: I think a lot of people stay away from Visual Kei just because it's Visual Kei, but I think a lot of people would like it if they gave it a chance. I hope people here don't avoid clicking the songs I recommend for the same reason. :(
Here's another fun DaizyStripper song with a standup bass and a horn section: Uso to Kagero.

Yeah these EPs by 80kidz were a bit disappoiting but IIRC they just wanted to try new things with these. Hopefully their next full album will be as amazing as the others.

I feel like Abe Mao isn't popular enough. She's by far my favorite "cute girl doing pop-rock".
I just love her powerful voice, which is a breath of fresh air compared to the other voices you hear in J-Pop. Her album released this year is quite great, and so are her other albums.

I also recently realized how many talented artists were managed by Amuse. They have ONE OK ROCK, Perfume, Porno Graffiti, HaKU, NICO Touches The Walls, Abe Mao, Takahashi Yu, Fukuyama Masaharu, Monobright, Flumpool... Damn.

Also, Oricon released their yearly top 100. Arashi are first obviously (and the album rules so, yaaaaaay!), Maximum The Hormone 15th, Perfume 23rd, ONE OK ROCK 24th, Sakanaction 31st...

And here's the one for the singles, AKB (and their sister bands) and Johnny's are everywhere.

Listened to Nagasawa Tomoyuki's new album which is pretty great. His style is a bit similar to Suga Shikao, not a surprise that they belong to the same label.

monobright also released a new album last month. It's monobright 101 so don't expect something different from their older releases. I can't complain, it's just so good.

Zettai Shoujo was amazing. I really like the direction she's progressing in. 少女3号 and 青い部屋 especially but really, most of it was fantastic.

I also checked out Haruka to Miyuki, tricot and Kinoko Teikoku at AlabastreAizo's recommendation(?) and those were top tier as well, especially the last.
I also gave RADWIMPS a try but I only enjoyed the most recent two albums. All the stuff before sounded very generic for lack of better term. Zettaizetsumei was kind of like a poor man's BUMP OF CHICKEN but still enjoyable.

RADWIMPS 1 and RADWIMPS 2 are forgettable.
RADWIMPS 3 and RADWIMPS 4 are pretty great imo, especially 4.
Altocolony no Teiri and Zettai Zetsumei are basically what RADWIMPS are nowadays, and both were also awesome.
The latest album might be my favourite though I can't stop listening to it.

There are a handful of tracks from Radwimps first couple of albums that I enjoy, but I agree that they have gotten stronger with each album. I don't even want to think how many times I've listened to Zettai Zetsumei :p

Lucky him!

Too bad she went to LA, I am available here in UK!

She goes to London often! ;) It's easier to find her here though because she has a house in Beverly Hills now. It's huuuuge.

However, she met this guy though her real estate agent, I think... probably at a swanky party. ;(

Anyway...

Kouhaku setlist plans are up. Ayu doing INSPIRE = WHAT? It's a song from 2004, lol. Lack of LOVE again :(....

Holy Shit.
I was going trough the links, and while listening to indigo la End I thought "Uh, the vocalist sounds like the guy from Gesu no kiwami otome." I kept going and when I finished I went back and opened both the links, and realized they also look the same. "It can't be", I thought. Yep, turns out they're the same person, and here I am, only figure this out now, mind blown.

Now Kurita, I want to see the releases of this year that you didn't like.

I didn't like Kyary's album. That's about it haha
I don't bother listening to releases if I didn't like a music video or a preview.

Merry Christmas from Gesu no Kiwami Otome and I.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__uhbzb3EDw

I went to a friend's event down South this past weekend, so I missed their free show at Tower Records... I was sad when I made the decision, but then I decided that I want to give them my money anyway!

Edit:

New MV by Gaki Ranger, the guy who did Taco Dance (that I was promoting a few weeks ago).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxsCFozyOuM

What a silly guy. I honestly quite like his instrumentals and beats, though. They're very high energy and fun! Even the chopped and screwed bridge is good. In fact, that's probably the most well produced chopped and screwed I've ever heard.

Edit 2:
I like this preview for Yamazaki Aoi's new album. Damn. She's two years younger than me. That's very impressive.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFkki0QD-YY

Oh, man! I found a new Shoegazey, New Wavey band!!!!! The Florist is made up of members from a few bands, most of which I do not know. Awesome song. Ahhhh. Now I can sleep.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yx-PFkz5Kxs

All right, so, was I a good Santa? Did I get something for everyone?

I'm a bit disappointed that The Florist doesn't sound like Starboard, the previous band of the vocalist... Wanted to buy their CD earlier this year though but it's not on cdjapan/HMV huh

Anyway I've watched my ORANGE RANGE live DVD. So good. 34 songs, they never stop, the crowd is crazy. Perfect tracklist on top of that. I just love these guys, definitely one of my favorite Japanese bands.
Guess I'll watch Takahashi Yu's DVD next.

Also... I preordered this : http://www.hmv.co.jp/en/artist_ASIA...-9-14-ファン感謝祭-〜2013-9-15-オールスター感謝祭-LTD_5621902
It's a blu-ray box with the two live shows of Asian Kung-Fu Generation that they held last September. It was for their 10th year anniversary. The first show had a tracklist made by the fans, the second show features prestigious guests such as Horie Atsushi (Straightener), Hosomi Takeshi (ELLEGARDEN, the HIATUS) or Kanazawa Daisuke (Fujifabric)

I'm a bit disappointed that The Florist doesn't sound like Starboard, the previous band of the vocalist...
I love it. Shoegazey and New Wavey. Mmmmmmmm. I like Starboard (ワールド・サーフ is sooo good), too, though. I understand how you feel. I'm not disappointed; in an ideal world, I could have both bands.

You didn't ask for it but here it is, the list of all the albums (and EP) that I liked this year.
Alphabetical order + links (when I can find some). One of the best years for J-Music ever.

Finished listening to all of those and some more extensively yesterday. a flood of circle, chirinuruwowaka and The Flickers were especially good.

I also found Emiri Ota's Rennaisance album to be really good. Very unconventional singing and some of her songs reminds me of Seiko Oomori.

Haven't seen anyone mention Chiaki Kuriyama yet and I frankly didn't know she could actually sing, I only knew her as an actress before.

Unrelated to this thread but I also urge people to check out Yaya (야야).

Listening to Uplift Spice's new album. I was a big fan of them a couple of years ago but kinda stopped listening to them for some reason. Now I remember why I like them, it's a really great album

Also, Soredemo Sekai ga Tsuzukunara released a new PV, their new mini-album will be released next month. They'll also re-release their indie albums, so I guess I'll order all of them.

And I ordered Kyuso Nekokami's three CDs, Faridmon already talked about them, they're pretty fun. They kind of remind of MONOBRIGHT, not musically but they're also a light-hearted and upbeat band like them.

Discovered a great artist, Yonezu Kenshi . He's a former vocaloid producer and started to do songs with his own voice a couple of years ago. He made his major debut this year. He has a quite original universe and his songs are really fun to listen to. His 2012 album, diorama is a gem.

Are they on a major label?
My friend sang a Sakanaction song at karaoke yesterday, so I asked him if he was also into Indie music. He was confused, and told me that they're a major band and that they're super famous. I was surprised. I thought they were Indie... They definitely still have an Indie sound.

Edit: I guess they're under Hip Land Music. Hmm.
