Japanese Music (Pop, rock and all 'dat) |OT|

So, what's going on with Morning Musume? I just saw the Oricon sales update and it turns out that their newest single had their biggest first day sales (119k) in over 10 years. It actually sold more on its first day than the life time sales of any single they've released since 2003 (with the exception of their last single). Did something big happen to them recently?

They've been regaining popularity ever since they switched to dance music, around the time of One Two Three. They've put more of an emphasis on their choreography and are doing more hands on promotions.

Just found out that post-rock shoegazers Lemon's Chair will be releasing their second album in March... FUCK YES! Can't believe the debut came out all the way back in 2010. What a wait, I hope it's worth it.

Although with a cover like that, how can it fail.

Some of you may remember that I met Taku, the singer of Nothing Carved In Stone, last month at a hookah bar. Just like he mentioned that night, he put me on the guest list for a show. that show was last night, and it was incredible. I haven't moshed like that in a long time. All the Japanese people were amused with my dancing and gaijin power while moshing. The crowd was pretty huge, and I don't think I've been in a standing area that large before. By the end, everyone was rocking out. They played two encores, although it wasn't originally planned. After the show, a random kid asked to take a picture with me. This was either because he thought I looked cool with my leather jacket and bandana, or he thought I was a dumb foreigner who looked like a pirate. Both are fine with me!

Anyway, the guest pass also functioned as a backstage pass (the second photo is of the backstage after-show thing), so I went upstairs and talked to Taku for a bit before I had to catch the train. I ended up meeting some of his family hahah.

Nothing's Carved In Stone puts on one hell of a show! It was nice to have a break from my damn papers (which, as of tonight, are done! Two month break time; time for more concerts!). Apparently, if I went the night before, Taku would have introduced me to one of my favorite bands. He said he'll introduce me another time, though!

In two nights, I'll see FLiP, Four Get Me Nots, tricot, Unlimits, and Scotland Girl. My friend just wants to see FLiP, but I'm going for for everyone besides FLiP heh. Maybe I'll like them more when I see them perform live.

That sounds amazing.

Getting me pumped to go back to Japan in the Autumn.

My friend's band, REDMAN has a new MV. I enjoyed it. It's so dramatic, though. Hahaha.

Also, new Lamp music video. It's so dreamy...

That Perfume concert looks incredible. When was this? Was it the December show?

Should I watch it now or wait for the blu-ray...
Oh well *hits play*

Anyway, grabbed some stuff at Book Off today... Didn't expect them to have the latest Rockin'on Japan (bottom right) so it was a nice surprise.

When's the BD out? It's tempting to import that, but I have to save money. I find out my exchange university soon. Can't wait to go back to Japan.

Whereabouts are you Kurita? Are you studying/working/travelling?

No idea, but I'm sure we'll get a date soon.

Oh and I'm not in Japan, I live in France (and I'm studying Japanese), there's a Book Off in Paris haha
Going to Japan for the first time this summer with my family.

Wait, so you have Uniqlo AND Book-off in France? Extremely jealous now.

I was there for 6 weeks last summer on Shikoku Island, so somewhat rural. Still great though. Whereabouts are you going? Big cities, I presume.

Back on topic: Perfume played a gig in Paris, didn't they? And KPP?
I'd go to the London gigs but the woes of being a student. Lol

Yeah Perfume came last July, KPP also performed here last year and she's coming back in April.
Perfume's show was one of the best concerts I've ever been to (it's a tie with ONE OK ROCK's show).

This was the longest concert I've ever been to. Four Get Me A Nots, tricot, Scotland Girl, FLiP, Kenco Yokoyama, and Unlimits. The show was about 5 and a half hours long.

There was microphone throwing, two bands cross dressing (one of them mid-encore), and more crowd surfing than I have ever witnessed. I got punched, elbowed, kicked, headbutted, climbed on... We met a guy named Yama, and he ripped tricot's set list off the stage and gave it to me. I also bought a tricot shirt and towel, my first band towel, in fact. (Some may not know this, but buying small towels from your favorite band is a big thing here.)
Kenco Yokoyama was on the And Your Birds Can Sing album, but wasn't on the tour. They were tonight's surprise guest, and they came out dressed in drag! The lead singer was showing us his ACDC panties.
He threw three different microphones at least 5 times total into the crowd. I bet the roadies didn't like him too much because they had to constantly pull the fish the mics out of the crowd afterwards.

For Unlimits encore, everyone but the lead singer dressed in Kenco Yokoyama's drag. Actually, there was one member of Kenco that didn't cross dress; the drummer was wearing aviators, a hat, and a leather sleeveless jacket. So, the drummer of Unlimits cross dressed by wearing his clothes. Pretty fun concert, but I'm beat. Gotta sleep.

Did you get groovy with Scandal's guitarist? She tweeted about being there and digging tricot hah

I don't know how I didn't discover them before, but I am absolutely in love with Charisma.com. They're amazing. One of the most refreshing new groups out of Japan.

Oh I was wondering if there was any site that lists weekly or monthly upcoming music releases? I can't seem to find one for some reason...

::Sigh:: I miss Midori. Last Japanese band to really set my world on fire.

I know it's not the same, but do you listen to Mariko Goto's band? My friend saw her live, and said it was awesome (and very, very strange). Here's a perfect example.

Oh, man. Watching this again. She is so strange and fun. It's nice that she is so happy at shows, but she has some major cutting scars on her wrists. :/

I think that's why I liked Midori so much. Super happy lyrics imposed over super aggressive metal. I'll check out her band, though it doesn't seem to be quite the same thing.

Wondering if Japanese Music GAF can help me out. So I was watching J-Melo on NHK World with my sis last sunday and halfway in the show there was this guy who recommended some pretty decent Japanese indie rock bands. 3 bands in fact. Sadly, I cannot remember the names apart from the fact that 2 of the band names were english and one was Japanese. Does anyone here frequently watch the show or perhaps know where I can find the latest episode so I can get the names of the bands?

Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately they don't put their videos online.
But looking at the artists list of "J-Musicなう" might help you since it was the one that was on last week :

My guesses are Sakanaction, Kinoko Teikoku... Dunno what the third one could be.

Yes, that's one band found!! Instantly recognised the name and video. Wish I could remember the other two. Definitely an english name. I recall the video was shot in London with like a weird, old school film faded filter. The narrator talked about how the band used to live in the UK or something like that. Cannot remember a single thing about the other band/video. Looks like I'll need to see when J-Melo is repeated before the next episode on Sunday X(

Either way, gonna check out all the links you posted. Thanks for the help btw :)
