Japanese PSP pre-orders going for $489?!?!?

There are problems with every launch system. It doesn't matter what system, Nintendo, Microsoft or otherwise. They ALL have people reporting various problems. So you might as well not get any system with that attitude.
Perhaps you're right, the only systems I've gotten at launch are handhelds. I've waited on all the other consoles as I'm really not into them. Never had a problem with the GB on through the GBA though, except the GBA I got out of Japan. I can totally understand dead pixels, but I was referring to the hardware issues, I've never heard of such problems before with handhelds. The only major issues I've heard with the DS so far are dead pixels and touch screen problems.

I'll admit my import Japanese launch GBA didn't last as long as it should have, only a couple of years. But that was more my fault than anyone else's it seems. Faded LCD, I had left it under sunlight for far too long.

EDIT: Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying PSP is a faulty product by any means at all. I still want one as I stated originally. I was just wanting to know, based on previous launches whether these kinds of issues are ironed out by the US launch. Like I said I've paid little attention to Sony console launches, let alone any other console. It was just a question. You should see me weariness with PC products. I won't go into how many times something majorly bad has happened from buying the most innocent of products. It's a bit freaky.

Thats fantastic. If only the rest of the world was happy with having faults in their products. These are the people we should all strive to be :)

Are you honestly having trouble getting the point? Some of the posters here reported having dead pixels on their PSPs, and said that it's not a big deal, as in they only have 1 or 2 dead pixels and they're only noticeable when the screen is totally white, or during FMVs. In other words, most of the time you can't even see them, hence not being that big a deal.

...what?

$10 bucks says the seller gets stiffed. Only a braindead moron would pay over $1000 for a system that's worth slightly less than $200. I wouldn't pay $1000 for it even if it were the prototype and was signed by Kutaragi himself. Let alone $1000 just for info. I could give him info for free: Buy from another seller.

I'd pay $300 for a PSP, dead pixels and all. Most LCD displays that are this size are flawed by nature. Of course I'd like a flawless screen, since that's what I'm supposed to be paying for, but one or two dead pixels is fine. If I paid more than $300, then I'd bitch. Because at anything more than an 80% markup, I expect perfection.

What, are you kidding I dont see this being such a big problem in laptop screens and they are like 4 times the size. Look its shoddy workmenship no matter what way you look at it or spin it. There shouldn't be this many problems with a handheld just starting out I mean handhelds need to stand up to the eviroment they are made for and well it looks like starting out the psp dosn't have what it takes. hell the ps2 had problems sitting statictally I fear for the future of the psp dealing with the regular transportation that handhelds endure.

so dee, are they really gonna charge you $500 for the PSP that you ordered?

No. They can't. What happens is that they informed me that this is the current price, and that it's up to me whether I wish to pay that much, or wait for the price to drop. So that's what I'm doing. Carlos, you know I have no qualms about dropping big bucks on new consoles (even though I can't afford to), but that's waaayyy more than I'mn willing to spend for a barebones PSP system with no games or accessories. Now, if Play-Asia, Lik-Sang, etc said they'd sell me the Value Pack with Ridge Racers for ~$400, then I may consider it. Even then, it's flirting with excessive. Long story short, I refuse to wait till' March to possibly (since no US launch date is set in stone) play Ridge Racers. Who's to say this frenzy won't repeat itself in the US? At least here, I have some connections. We'll just have to wait and see.

In other news, Sawaru is real nice. Much better than I expected.

Even on a high res monitor one dead pixel is noticeable. I find it amusing that people 'dont mind' when it comes to PSP. I'm assuming its because they cant do anything about it, big fan or dont care about screen quality ;) Dead pixels has always been an issue with all LCD screens. I most certainly would complain as i'm spending my cash on something that isnt intended to have faults.
The black and white variety arent the worst but there will be people with coloured or damaged pixels too.

No no. Don't get it twisted, I don't condone Sony letting dead pixels get past quality control. However, many LCD screens this size, on mass produced products (including color cell phone screens) ocassionally suffer from dead pixels. My guess is that this is just their way of saving money. Flaws like that can really piss me off, but compared to the problems in the links that Timbuktu posted, dead pixels are minor. With that said, I'm pretty sure (or at least I hope) the dead pixel problem only affects a small minority of buyers. Many people have screens without this flaw.

If I had 400 bones to blow, I would blow it on one of these..
