Jason Schreier hints at Sony Santa Monica's next game NOT being a new IP and progressing well

From:

Cory Barlog's game is SSM's next big thing. Last time I spoke to anyone about it (a month or two ago) it was going well.
Why does everybody think Barlog's [Santa Monica Studio] game is a new IP?

Edit:

It's not a scifi game

I'll put it this way: it's not a new IP but it might feel like one. Maybe that's why people are confused. Please don't ask me more questions about this - if I wind up reporting more information at any point in the future it'll be in an article, not on a forum.

I can also confirm that Ashhong knows what they are talking about.

And that the sci-fi stuff (that people have apparently believed for years now?) is nonsense.

Also not a licensed ip.

I wouldn't disagree with anything Jason has said 🙃

It's not a licensed game though don't worry

Edit: previous comments by Ashhong

I can't wait for Santa Monica to announce their game. I truly don't know how era will react
I will just say it's different and probably not something anybody is expecting
Not trying to sour anyone's expectations by the way. I think it's gonna be amazing
At first I was like :/ but then I was like :O

It seems to be in response to a leaked discord message from a leaked called DanielPK which suggested the game was cancelled. Luckily doesn't seem to be.

If it's anything Star Wars related I'm selling the fucking console. Same goes for Unsharted, let Naughty Dog fuck with that.

Does Sony have any film franchises that might translate to game? Maybe we can deduce what it is from that.

Maybe it IS a space themed game, but Sony forced them to attach it to a popular franchise in order to guarantee sales/less risk for new IP.

Considering how much god of war 2018 and Ragnarok sold, I think Cory had a blank check to make anything he wanted.

He is a starwars fan, so maybe a starwars game. Maybe something else. Who knows

They put together Ragnarok in what, four years? The game was disappointing but it was complete and ambitious and played well.

Did they have a lot of staff leave afterwards or something?

They did have a minor layoff a year or two ago. Also a senior game director(I think) left recently.

Also it seems the game was in pre production since god of war 2018( Cory wasn't involved with Ragnarok) and entered full production after Ragnarok

four years of preproduction is insane but I guess Sony was fat and happy at that time and let Barlog do whatever he wanted.

But four years of preproduction and three years of full production and "not going well" is a disaster!

This sound like bullshit, i don't see an important studio like santa monica doing a sequel of a game they didn't made, that is something you would force bend or bluepoint to do.

And no chance they are making a little shit of war, i doubt corey is so out of loop to not know what most people think of atreus.

Its obviously God of War Egypt. Why the hell are people assuming its a sequel to a game they didnt make? The Valhalla DLC basically confirms its Egypt.

The story was dissapointing compared to the first. Everything else was fucking amazing. I dont get the hate from people. The gameplay and level design was a solid step up

Ragnarok was shit, so I really hope some drastic changes in pacing for the next entry or else bye bye GoW.
Well Ragnarok wasn't Barlog, so even if it is more GoW it will be better than that.

I think they are working on a new IP though, also Schreier just said 'why does everyone think its a new IP?', that doesn't mean it isn't, also doesn't mean it is and he can use that excuse when the game is finally revealed one way or another (he's kinda good at doing that, leaving just enough so that he can twist his predictions to suit reality). Not only that, they could be working on two games, the next GoW and a new IP which wouldn't surprise me at all (new GoW next year, new IP 2027 which then fits that narrative of 'next' game not being a new IP)

As much as I dislike the nu-God of War games for their writing, pacing and combat... I would pay money to see Kratos rip that little shit Atreus into pieces.

And if they do send Kratos to Egypt, I would be personally offended if they don't do some Teal'c Goa'uld easter egg, since Christopher Judge is the voice actor.

PS5 is already have years of life, so by the Sony mentality (remake, remasters, GAAS) we can pretty much attest that their next game will be indeed God of War.

God of War is their second best IP, only neck a neck with Spider-Man, so make a bit of sense they are still on pursuit.

But damn, Ragnarok was such a terrible game. GoW 2018 was amazing in comparison, I can't believe how bad GoW: Ragnarok is in comparison with GoW: 2018.

Gow 2018 pacing wasn't the best, but the story plus the new gameplay of Kratos really carry the game overall.

So Cory is 8 years working on a new god of war reboot

Cory is SSM's creative director, so he's basically creative director or all the stuff they release.

In addition to his studio creative director role, he was also supposedly directing a new (meaning non-GoW) IP he pitched late 2018/early 2019.

Before releasing it, SSM is supposed to release something else smaller, I assume directed by somebody else.

And in addition to these things, SSM is also confirmed working (with another director) minimum in the next mainline GoW game bringing Kratos to a new mythology.

They are also helping with the GoW tv show adaptation (which got rebooted last year).

SSM is listed by Sony as a SP only studio, meaning they aren't working in any GaaS title.

I think they are working on a new IP though, also Schreier just said 'why does everyone think its a new IP?', that doesn't mean it isn't, also doesn't mean it is and he can use that excuse when the game is finally revealed one way or another
Just after releasing GoW 2018, a game that broke Sony's sales record and was the 2018 that won more GOTY awards, Cory said that was going to pitch a new IP.

Having had that huge success with the GoW 2018 reboot, it's super likely that SSM/PS Studios/SIE greenlighted it. As far as we know they've been working on it. And even if not confirmed seems that its theme is the space.

Does it mean it's a brand new IP? No, it can be a non-SSM IP. That year 2018 a few months after he said that they released Spider-Man, and pretty likely he played it by then and knew it was going to be a huge success. So maybe it's a Marvel IP he'd like to adapt.

Or who knows, maybe it's another IP, pretty likely owned by Sony. As an example could be Uncharted in space: the daughter dissapears searching for Atlantis, Nate goes to find her and ends finding an alien ship there and travelling to another planet to find her with Sully, who becomes a fan of aliens with 3 boobs.

ND doesn't seem interested in Uncharted 5 because like other Sony teams think white male protagonists give you cancer or similar, but Sony continues listing Uncharted as one of their current main single game series, meaning pretty likely some single player Uncharted in the works somewhere.

I dont know if I trust Barlog anymore after finding out he was the one who campaigned hard for Ragnarok to be released on PS4 and chose to make GOW 2 on PS2 instead os PS3.

I fear he's not ambitious enough.

Prove me wrong. GOW used to be the most next gen shit out there whenever it released.

Not sure I would count that as a minor layoff, I don't remember those being reported for SMS.
