Jason Schreier hints at Sony Santa Monica's next game NOT being a new IP and progressing well

Jason Schreier elaborates on what it's supposed to be, while also corroborating what a SMS insider by the name of Ashhong said, who confirmed that it's NOT a licensed IP.

Here's what I'm guessing -

Barlog was brought back to SSM with the following deal : You reboot God of War for us, and essentially give us a new universe and slew of characters to spin-off into sequels and other games...and we give you full reign on a AAA game of your choosing. I'm guessing it's a radically new take on an existing franchise (NOT god of war) and it's slated for next year.

Sort of like the "one for us, one for you" deal that a lot of Hollywood directors get.

I am down with anything written by Cory. The guy that wrote Ragnarok, can you please fuck off, and permanently? Thank you.
The biggest problem with GOW Ragnarok is the Norse GOW series really needed 3 games to tell its story. It's pretty clear that everything felt rushed in Ragnarok because its was supposed to be a trilogy. Barlog and SSM obviously didnt want to be stuck making solely GOW games for another 15 years, so they finished the GOW Norse mythology in 2 games

I am just glad the new game is reportedly coming along well. Few studios are as competent as SSM. Easily a top 5 studio in the industry

I don't agree. I felt like even the second game became pretty darn repetitive being in the same environment, fighting mostly the same mobs.

My issues with Ragnarok are so big that i simply don't trust the guy who wrote it. The way the pussified Kratos is unexcusable. The introducing of those worthless secondary characters with the vibe of the avengers is completely horseshit. This is GoW, everything is supposed to be centered and heavily focused on Kratos. Odin fight, the one they hyped up for two games straight, was pathetic. So many playable sections with Atreus was the worst. The story was so damn poorly written that a random guy on the streets would've done a better job. As i said after beating the game, the way i would've liked Ragnarok to finish is like this- You fight Odin, he is simply too strong, he kills Kratos, but lets Atreus live. Atreus find Tyr, and since Tyr has visited a bunch of different lands, he lets Atreus know that there's a land of ressurection (Egypt). So that is where they go for the next game. You begin the next title as Tyr with Kratos head on his back, etc. Perfect setup for the Egyptian setting and i would've liked to see Kratos lose for once, it would only add more depth to his character in my opinion.

Would be amazing if Cory put their efforts towards something like Castlevania. That's one franchise in need a good kick in the right direction and would suit his direction.

They put together Ragnarok in what, four years? The game was disappointing but it was complete and ambitious and played well.

Did they have a lot of staff leave afterwards or something?
It was not ambitious at all imo, it barely looked better than a ps4 title (not sure if it even beat tlou2 in its best moments tbh), game felt like a big expansion pack, they even failed to deliver on the final battle after they amped up the shit out of it.

It was a sequel like forbidden west\panderman 2\probably yotei, improved in a lot fo aspects but fundamentally inferior to the previous game as a whole.

Being complete and playing well doesn't traduce into ambitious.

Game was my goty that year so i'm hardly an hater but ambitious was not.

Hopefully gow egypt is gonna be actually ambitious.

"Not a new IP but will feel like one" also isn't licensed.

So now it's just something set in the God of War universe not featuring Kratos. How safe and boring honestly.

Its God of War: Egypt. Kratos is still the lead. This was basically confirmed by the Ragnarock DLC.

Dang.........that's actually a good point. Which could point to some of the pacing issues I had with it. I still loved the game, but it didn't need to be as long as it was. Probably did just pack in everything to get the Norse stuff done with.

Out side of insomniac all ps studios have been pretty shit this gen. Anytime I hear something, it's either flat out horse shit or a disappointment. They all must be coasting still on the ps4 revenue…

Interesting.......no clue what this game could be then LOL! But probably a revamping of a Sony owned video game IP I'd think, since it's not a licensed game. And I doubt it's a game owned by Capcom like Castlevania.

Santa Monica Studio released a $200M AAA game just a little less than three years ago.
orly?

fuck that, cory and his then-small now-big team have been hammering on this new game for 7 years. This is insane. He might retire after this one as he's getting old. Videogames are brutal and this is not a sustainable art-form. Fuck that 2

Do you have a credible source showing this game has been in development for 7 years?

Funny that I was about to write this exact same thing as a tongue-in-cheek response and you beat me to it!

Dude I wish he was in charge of Castlevania. Buy the rights then it won't be "licensed" as the best thing out of that IP in years wasn't even a game (Netflix show).

If they end up preparing a new GoW, then this gonna be tricky. Ragnarok was a fetid piece of work in the story department and looks more a DLC than anything. I can't see them changing Kratos, they probably would love to kill him for good because the character itself stands up against everything modern Sony believe. But at same time it could be a chance to deviate from this crap they made with Ragnarok and start fresh again.
If it ends up being a sequel though, then its a 100% skip from me.

I was done with the modern GOW after 2018.. hope for a new reboot or even better a return to classic GOW, no matter the setting, enough with the walking and talking games

Cory handed GoW to a different director after 2018's release. But you might be right, he might have taken a 3-year vacation after that! Who knows!

-> he didn't and have been implying he's working on a ne game since 2018-2019

IP owned by another company still counts as licensed IP.

Cory Barlog said in this Skillup interview back in 2018 during the God of War 2018 release promotion, when asked about what was he going to do after GoW 2018 (8:51 of the video): "First in the menu there's a long vacation, I'll dissapear from the world during a month, hopefully two... [talks about family stuff]... and then figuring out what's going on with the next one. I really would love to create something of my own next, write something that really, really is trully 100% coming from my original vision, that would be awesome. But we'll have to see if I convince Sony about that one" (during the interview the interviewer was driving to bring Cory to meet George Miller -Mad Max director- at the 20th Century Fox studios because wanted to chat with him):

Hmmmm.....but it's not licensed IP.

Okay, so let's talk about this shall we. We know:

1. It is not a licensed IP
2. It is not a new IP

That means it must be an IP that Sony owns, does it not?

Spider-Man, God of War, Uncharted, Horizon, Gran Turismo, The Last of Us, Twisted Metal, Ape Escape, Ghosts of Tsushima, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet and Clank, Killzone, LittleBigPlanet, Legend of Dragoon, LocoRoco, Ape Escape, Infamous, Resistance, and Bloodborne. Add more for me, this is all I remember.

We also know from Jason that we might not recognize the IP but it won't be new.

That means it is likely a genre flip of an existing game. Imagine for example, if God of War became an isometric rpg. We also know Corey is a writer and wants to have serious content. He's a fan of George Miller so it's safe to say he would not be content writing the next Jak and Daxter or Little Big Planet.

So of the above list we can narrow it down. Spider-Man is too close to "licensed IP" for Jason to have made such a declaration openly, it's out. Games that could be in due to their level of seriousness(capable of having an earnest story that George R Miller could appreciate).

God of War
Horizon
The Last of Us
Killzone
Legend of Dragoon
Bloodborne
Ghosts of Tsushima
Resistance

I left Infamous off the list because I just can't see it, but that would be wild. I can't narrow it down any further than this, but knowing the studio's history and since I doubt Naughty Dog would let go of TLOU even partially without us hearing about it, I would be a little surprised if this game wasn't a God of War spinoff of some sort that is NOT, I repeat, NOT a 3rd person action game. The obvious thing would be a RPG. God of War RPG from Corey Balrog, Sherlocked for you fine folks.

Cory doesn't want to publicly admit it, but here you have a leak on what he's working on:
Knack 3... a reboot where he moves to the frozen lands of the north of Europe and starts a new career as stripper

Please don't tell it to anybody, it's a secret ;P
