On Tuesday's episode of KFGD, Blessing and Andrea were talking about Phil Spencer's tweet about The Initiative.

"Great update today with @DGallagher_LA @mattbooty and the team @TheInitiative. Incredibly talented studio challenging themselves to do new things things (and old things :) ) in new ways."

In the chat...

44:35 - JeffGrubb: it means perfect dark, y'all

user in chat: do you think it's a 3rd person Perfect Dark??

46:48 - JeffGrubb: it is

"I don't know if Perfect Dark is something that Microsoft would wanna spend potentially hundreds of millions of dollars on it feels like a really risky gamble." - Andrea

48:50 - JeffGrubb: they are

48:54 - JeffGrubb: it's perfect dark

Video starts at 44:12.

I hope this will wow us the same way Gears of War wow-ed us back in 2004/2005.
I haven't played past perfect dark games, but I'm not really excited by it. What kind of game is it? It is more goldeneye or more splinter cell conviction?

the original game was like goldeneye the newer game is closer to splinter cell based on rumors and being third person

I want to buy a new Perfect Dark game, but my instincts tell me this will be a generic third person shooter that has so little in common with PD that it's an insult to the original.

Whilst there has been many a time I've wanted to see a new Perfect Dark I suspect youre right on that one. At the moment I'm not convinced that MS are able to effectively curate their old IP, case in point being Battletoads.

Of course it is Perfect Dark. Before Banjo even gets his first chance in his main genre on Xbox, Perfect Dark gets its second.

I'd love a new Perfect Dark, and vastly prefer third to first person games, but at this point MS need to prove a game is good before I'll be excited for it.

The best they'be been managing, outside Ori and Forza Horizon, is mediocre, so they are well past the point I'll be hyped by franchise alone.

oh boy?!? Why the hell?!?

I am still loving the N64 original and Xbox 360 Remaster.

WTF are they doing with their Brands?!
Conker: Dead
Banjo: Dead
Battletoads: Trash
Kameo: Dead
Jet Force: Dead
Perfect Dark Zero: Trash
Perfect Dark next: Third Person Trash

Somebody take these brands from them and create games these franchises deserve.

Why are they resurrecting this dead franchise that was generic shit even back on the N64?

It's bad enough they created 2 new studios to milk existing franchises, but at least they were strong brands that deserved saving. Perfect Dark was only ever relevant because it was from the people who made Goldeneye. That's it. The actual setting and characters are awful boilerplate sci-fi cliches.

Fucking hell, they really are clueless. What a waste of all that talent they've been gathering at the Initiative.

the original was literally goldeneye reskinned and with added features

Faaaaaaackkk....
Sometimes these sequels from games in the 90s are good, sometimes I feel they're just trying to cash in on the nostalgia. Either way, I'm curious and excited to see how this pans out.
😉

Man..... I officially hate insiders, they are taking the fun out of these events. I hope developers start to clamp down hard on NDA breakers so that these insiders don't have information in the future.

Conker gotta be the most disappointing "lost" franchise in history. Bad Fur day is likely the funniest game of all time and managed to pull off a big-budget sarcastic self-aware game unlike anything (apart from maybe some of Tim Schafer's work) we have seen, it was a new direction for games to go, something unique, a game made for comedy.

Used to enjoy it on N64 and was really excited to hit it up again on Rare Replay. Found it really really annoying to play, I guess games have moved on a bit in the years since.

As weird as it is that the spiritual successor to Goldeneye becomes a third person game, to be fair I no longer want to play an FPS on a console.

However, given MSFT's platform strategy, I would have taken an FPS game for the PC version. Couldn't we do that, while finding a different IP for a third person title?

I guess the character model of Joanna Dark with a nice butt would have been wasted in a first person game, gotta leverage the value of your IP I guess.

Oh yeah, the gameplay is completely outdated, it plays bad and the level design is old and worn, but the humor still works, but you have to suffer to actually play the game to find it. However, the remaster they did plays better, for some reason though they didn't include it in Rare Replay, which makes no sense.

A third-person direction is smart and might even be a must if it's gonna do well because it's just to hard to compete with the huge juggernauts of FPS these days. Third-person might be the thing to set it apart.

Did anyone play those James Bond games, Everything or Nothing, or that Russia From Love game? they featured a solid third-person spy/shooter style that might work well with Joanna Dark.

Couldn't agree more with you. The original game on the N64 is unbeatable in every aspect. Judging from the Halo treatment I don't see a good game coming out of this.

I'm glad they choose 3rd person and the game should look good visually since it's done by The Initiative. I'm looking forward to seeing it

Show gameplay only though please

In times that MGS is dead, a Perfect Dark in third person could do the job perfectly (pun intended)

So sounds like they are going to do some "in the Perfect Dark universe" thing but try to spin a new IP out of it?

I just kinda wonder "why" you'd use such a stale IP that flopped the last time you used it.. but if it's just basically a new IP with a nod to PD fans that seems fine.

Who actually watches kinda funny games?

I'll never believe in a new Perfect Dark unless i see it.

10s of thousands of people daily actually.

But it is smart for MS to put their best AAA team on a Perfect Dark game?
