Jeff Minter makes a Unity announcement, but it's not a good one

Yeah, just read it in MCV - oops.

"A shared committment to excellence led to its cancellation". An odd statement if it was supposedly excellent?

that's terrible.

must have been coming along super turbo slow or something. when i talked to Peter Molyneux at E3 this year, he said they were hoping to have something playable at E3 05.

anyways, that really is a shame.

...realistically it was becoming unlikely that it’d be finished in time for anyone to want to publish it on Gamecube. The alternative would be a rush job and we simply didn’t want to do that. Best to call it a day.
Maybe that's what they mean by the first comment.

Bah!
Maybe they could shift development to a different machine? A music-based game would seem to benefit from CD capable hardware.

Nooooooo.... but I guess it's better to cancel than release a game that isn't meeting the intentions.

From the videos and screenshots I saw I got really excited.

Sounds to me like something like the following conversation probably went on between Jeff & Pete:

Pete: So, how long Jeff? we're running out of time for a Gamecube release if we want to make any money on this shit.
Jeff: Fuck Off, When it's finished...
Pete: Couldn't we just release it now with what we got? The kids will lap it up...
Jeff: I said...
Pete: Whoa, Fuck You.
Jeff: No... Fuck You
Pete (To PR): Press release, We're dumping this shit.
Jeff: Fine, Unity PocketPC it is then, mofo.

:P

(Just kidding, but damn shame)

:( :( :(

Not suprised. They should have moved it on to next gen platforms IMO but that would have taken a ton of work, maybe more than it was worth.

I don't think the game would have done well on any current platform. Surely it can't be much work switching to either PS2 or Xbox relative to the time spent already. Because of the limited appeal I think the best bet would've been to make it a launch title for a next-gen platform.

although I’ve built a shedload of stuff for Unity in the past couple of years it’s become clear that getting it all together into something that I’d be happy to call Unity and put my name to was going to take a lot of time and effort both from myself and the guys at Lionhead

we've got a lot of pretty visualiser stuff, but have no idea how to make a game of it. Anyone got Mizuguchi's number?

Just sounds to me like he had no solid plan as to how this game was going to come into existance in the first place.

I feel this backs up my 'pretty pictures, no gameplay' theory of Unity. Perhaps if he'd chosen a classic arcade game to rip the gameplay from in the first place this wouldn't have happened.

Harsh! (But true) :P

(iapetus pulls no punches, Jeff out for the count!)

Can someone please tell me how to get Jeff's job?

I'm confident in my abilities to:

- smoke copious amounts of weed
- diddle in game programming and have dick to show for it after two years

So, I've got a chance.

Someone hasn't been reading mod warnings.
Appearently, stating the post was in jest averts the punishment.

OH GOD DAMMIT.

Still, one man working on a GC game with no definite release date in this day and age sounds like a recipe for disaster. At least with PS2 it could have been released as a budget game. :(

Poor YaK. (Fires up Llamatron)

I bet it fucking sucked, anyway. Minter is definitely in the top ten people who 1.) get excited over the dumbest shit and 2.) made one good game and now is followed like a cult.

It's no surprise that he'd hook up with Peter Molyneux. They're practically the same person. The only difference is in the amount of weed they smoke on a daily basis.

Damn, I had a bad feeling over the complete silence he has maintained for almost half a year. I wonder if the project got bogged down with his constant engine tweaking? He was always adding something when reading his blog entries--that could've been good for a one person project on a machine that is being forgotten in America and Europe.

I called it back when Edge did there massive 8 page article on Unity where the only thing they could say about the gameplay, in between all the kissing of Minter's arse, was that there was none, as yet.

Was Unity the game posted here that had really shiny pictures, a female lead... and then later on an all CG trailer was posted as well? Or was that another game?

EDIT: NM just checked some screenshots. Completely different game... wonder what game I'm thinking of....

You mean the one good game surrounded by all the shitty ones?

You mean I waded through all the "YAK YAK YAK" and masturbation talk on those forums for two years just to get information about a game that's never gonna come out??

...

...dammit

This stinks. This was one of those wacky titles I was definitely looking forward to seeing this year. I guess in this case wacky=shit. I was hoping for some sort of irreverent Rez-like title.

Just play Rez on acid instead. Bonus points for not freaking out completely during the Stage 4 boss.

Much as this is disappointing news, I don't really think Tempest at an Underworld gig was going to be that much better than Space Harrier in it's trance trousers.

Hehehe.

Anyway, besides Minter being the man behind the llama, I mean, game...what's was going to be so cool about this anyway? I appreciate trippy visuals, especially those that react to music, but was there any gameplay that was talked about? And, really, they should just release this on the computer and/or other console.

A valiant quest of one dedicated man against the world to maintain his artistic vision... Fuck that! Next time maybe he should work with a massive bloated team of, Oh I dunno... maybe 3 or GASP! 4 people. Compromise! Integrity! Product!

I suppose he could get his shit together and launch it with one of the new systems but who is going give him any money to do that now? The Gamecube was a questionable choice of platform for this project anyway. Best to just use it all as trippy spell effects in Fable 2 I guess. (Yes I know that Peter Molyneux did not make Fable)

A shame. I wanted another Rez...

Hope that Mizuguchi-sam finish with the puzzles and go for something like that (but bigger and more dynamic that is what I wanted for Unity).

Rez and Tempest fans am crying.

You know, even I have to admit, this game was not going to do serious business, but still, I know a good strong number of people who were dying to play it. I really hope it lives on in some fashion.
