I mean why does this even matter? People who are buying X1 do not care. I bet for some, this is not a deal breaker. I'm not trying to derail the thread but isn't this far from surprising? We've discussed this for months. I think it's okay at this point. Things will straighten out in the end

This thread sure delivers great gifs and twitter reactions.

I think mods and CBOAT have said enough to let you know you are paying $499 for a rushed, unstable product,

people reading this thread insisting on buying a X1 at launch and then being upset when all sorts of issues appear, ranging from RRODs to minor technical stuff, have nobody to blame but themselves. They've been warned,

I wished I had read the internet more carefully when I bought that piece of shit hardware, the first 360 model back in 2007

Yeah, I personally think it's better to wait because by then things will sort itself out and if you wait a year or so, you will have cheaper games, more F2P games, and the better exclusives will be that. With that said, I think this is still a good launch for both systems in terms of games variety, especially with games like NBA 2K14, which aren't just simple ports.

It's a shame about the Xbox One though. What I'm more interested in most of the time is that will any news get to the public that would actually alter console preorders/first day purchases. Some people here don't understand how ignorant the general consumer as the they usually follow vague knowledge that's presented by the media or are generally followers of anything perceived to be popular or trending. If this is significant enough news that would hit the media, Microsoft would see hard times surrounding this launch.

I don't get why Arthur is arguing about the resolution being the point of of contention for the reasoning behind the embargo.

Who the fuck cares if that's the reasoning or not? The news of 720p fucking sucks for Xbox fans.

Gies used to work for IGN, right? So these are former co-workers calling him out for being a blatant shill right when Gies' dreams are being shattered. It's about time.

WCW vs WWF 1997

1998, man. The last couple of years has been Sony's 1997 WWF (rebuilding) and now they're getting ready to steamroll Billionaire Bill.

Do you really think they are going to go that deep? They are currently dealing with major Stock Holders wanting aggressively pushing Microsoft to sell of the division.

They can't go to deep.. If they do the Stock Holders could turn around and change the company as we know it.

I suppose it depends on how much of a "Devices and Services" company they want to become. If they're actively pursuing that, Xbox being their biggest physical product with brand relevance, I could only imagine they would.

Conrad burning a lot of bridges and potential partners in the future. Maybe the man don't give a fuck.

Or maybe he got hacked.
Or maybe these launches have exposed just how intertwined games journalism and PR are.

In any other area of journalism, independent thinking, and searching for the scoop, are encouraged.

I don't need two dozen identikit sites towing the company line, I want at least a few to be outliers, places where I go to get a scoop. It's why sites like this are becoming so popular - they are setting the news agenda, and that can't be good for traditional gaming sites, which are starting to look as outdated as the print media they replaced.

Yeah but you also have a lot of other people that put down $500 hoping to get the best and this happens.

Just checking in my good fellow GAFfers.

So many pages already, hope everyone is having fun, just keep it polite and respect each other to keep an easy job for the Mods, let them (Microsoft and Sony) do the wars, don't turn yourself against each other!

With that being said, I'm happy for a COD Ghosts at 1080p on the PS4, can't wait.

The 720p thing is nothing. Literally nothing in the bigger picture. The day one problems is a bigger deal. If MS comes out the door with huge problems, they're going to have a long road to recovery ahead. Moreso if Sony manages to come out without any problems.

So is Pennello going to give his apology or not? I remember him asking if GAF would apologize if there weren't significant differences "besides 1 or 2 fps" between the two consoles.

But I want to see blood : (

I'm dying over here. Holy crap!

Stop and think about what you said (the bolded part). If Sony, MS or Nintendo leaves home consoles there sure as hell won't be anyone to "fill the void". It's too risky business, the game industry is a joke as a whole and there are very few who are actually doing great in the industry commercially.

Why would any steady company like Samsung etc. want to mess their bed with this shit? It's not the same industry it was 10 years ago. A lot has changed and a lot for the worse.

Its a multi-billion dollar industry. Nintendo is a sizable company that lives entirely within this one segment, and they have literally billions in the bank and turned consisent profits every year for entire decades at points.

Microsoft made enough money on the X360 last generation to basically off-set the original Xbox losses AND all the shitty losses they took on various other entertainment division failures (like Zune).

The business model (being a platform holder who makes most of your money off royalties) is exactly what Apple, Google, and Valve currently offer. We currently know that Apple is looking to roll out gaming on AppleTV and that Amazon is building a gaming box as part of their push into that segment.

So you really think that should MS leave not a single one of them would see a niche they could thrive in? Would they stop making $500 hardware that they then sell for $400 eating the loss? Probably, but they wouldn't ignore one of the most lucrative forms of media from a royalties standpoint to a single company.

Further, they can't from a strategic standpoint. Sony has made it pretty damn clear that long term they're gunning for the Apple storefront and Google Play. They have Music Unlimited, Movies Unlimited, Gaikai in the pipeline, their own online music outlet, their own online movie outlet, their and their own online games outlet. The near term emergence of cloud computing will make online storefronts by far the primary source for media of all kinds, and owning the storefront will entitle you to the lion's share of the profits.

Sony became painfully aware of this after iTunes gobbled up their dominant position in the music industry while they where bitching about piracy and Napster. They've positioned themselves to cut everyone else off at the TV via Playstation. Microsoft is their biggest competitor on this ground and so far this year has been shitting their pants. Apple, Google, etc. aren't far from getting into this industry regardless via some sort of box or in-tv circuitry. Microsoft leaving would open a gaping hole they'd all rush to fill.

Believe me, it was worse back in the days where people couldn't commonly afford multiple machines.

C64 vs Spectrum
Amiga vs Atari ST
SNES vs Megadrive

The above were bitterly long fought wars between the owners, but only at a local level. My parents were too poor for me to even be on the losing side of C64/Spectrum, I had an Atari 800. I won the second two though (the Megadrive pulverised the SNES in the UK).

God bless the internet, now the battles happen on a global level. If you're not enjoying this, you're dead inside.

Yeah I always wondered how that played out back then without the internet. I had a Sega Genesis and SNES. But was way too young to remember any of the console fan BS, or care.

But I just mean in general, I find it bizarre how people like to be loyal to brands. I mean I get it. But then I don't. It's like, would you be willing to stay in the sinking ship just because your loyalty to the brand? At a certain point, I would hope people would just step back and say: fuck this, it's my money. I matter most.
