Jet Set Radio HD |OT| Flip The Raps, Flip The Track

Well, that's confirmed, at least. I don't have a capture card that supports HD, so you'll have to forgive the crappy S-video screenshots. I thought it was just my TV, but Jet Set Radio HD is legitimately darker than the original Dreamcast game.

i knew a babe that looked just like that in college , half japanese half taiwanese mmm mmm.

Bought it on release day and just started it yesterday and and beat it last night (with the Detached achievement. So annoying.)

Definitely noticed this game is darker than the original. On a few levels it was a bit hard to see what I was doing. I've also had the occasional suttering. I'd say this is my favorite rerelease so far from Sega, in terms of quality and also the game itself (since Rez technically doesn't count). Just as good as I remember. Just lot shorter than I remember. And I didn't hear as wide of a variety of songs from what I remember. (Dragula never came up).

I like how the Sega.net ads are still in the game.

And it's too bad you can upload/download graffiti.

what'd you do~~~

Download my program here to convert images into the right bin format: http://code.google.com/p/image2graffiti/downloads/list

Follow these instructions:

** TIME TO USE THIS PROGRAM **

  • Make an image that is 128x128, 256x128, or 512x128 for small, medium, or large graffiti.

  • Drag the image on top of Image2Graffiti.exe and it will make a bin file in the same folder as the image.

** NOW HOW DO WE GET THIS IN GAME? **

  • Download AFS Explorer 3.7.

  • Open AFS Exploer

  • File -> Import AFS File...
    • Open [Your Steam folder]\steamapps\common\Jet Set Radio\DATA\JETRADIO
    • Open E_GRF.AFS

IMPORTANT NOTE: We are about to replace one of the built-in graffitis so you may want to back this file up before hand by copying it in Windows and renaming it to something like "E_GRAF.AFS.bak"

  • Find the bin file you exported with Image2Graffiti.exe.

  • This is the part where you must drag your bin file onto one in AFS Explorer.

In AFS Explorer, you notice a list of items with this type of file name grfl00.bin. The last 3 letters are what is important. The 'l' means that this is a large graffiti. The 00 means it is the first large graffiti in the game. So if you wanted to replace the 3rd small graffiti, you would want to find grfs02.bin. If you wanted to replace the 5th medium-sized graffiti, you would find grfm04.bin.

So, find you bin file you made, and drag it on top of whatever graffiti you want to replace. (AFS Explorer will complain if you try to drag a large graffiti onto a smaller one.

  • File -> Update... (By default, it should save on top of the old one)

  • Run the game, find your graffiti in the graffiti list!

So I got my copy of JSRF and I'm not sure what to think so far. The levels may be bigger, but I don't think their design is as tight and clever as JSR so far. Momentum doesn't feel like such a big deal and I think the loss of the time limit, escalating enemy forces while tagging and manual graffiti takes away a lot from the gameplay. I'm a little disappointed to be honest.

Slow down on 99th Street is really, really bad around the center of the level (where the dragon is) and almost tempts me to dig out my original XBOX and use that.

Also, not being able to move the camera with the right stick is really painful after playing JSR HD! I didn't realise how much I relied on that until it was gone.

I forgot how horrible the controls were for this game , love the atmosphere and the music but the controls blow. Especially in the missions where you have to tag the other gang members.

This is still early, but here is v1 of the Custom Spray Manager. (No need for AFS Explorer)

http://code.google.com/p/image2graffiti/downloads/detail?name=JSRCustomGraffitiManagerV2.exe&can=2&q

First thing to do is point it to the correct folder, and once the folder is set up, just import graffiti.

The sprays should show up in the custom spray slot in game.

Hey, help me out with something.

The "browse" for the save program, when you provide me with a window that only allows me to select folders with a mouse. Why is that?

Are there two different types of "browser", as in one is a "file" browser an the other one is a "folder" browser?

I hate not being able to just paste the path to my save folder on a "browse" popup. Manually having to find it is horrible.

Just a question I always had when this behavior happens. Is it a "limitation" of the Language used for the coding of the program or it's just the author choosing to call the "folder browser" as opposed to the "file browser"?

Edit: Also a reminder of the sizes of the sprays on the program itself wouldn't be bad.. :D

Now I wish I got the PC version. I'm stuck on the 360 with the horrible in game editor...

Has anyone made anything worth while using the in game editor?

Good points. I agree that no textbox on the open folder dialog is lame. It is how the default open folder dialog in .Net works. I did find a modified one someone wrote online that has the textbox and replace mine with it.

I also added the sizes. Have a special Drizzle build!

V3: Now with more textbox and file size info

Cool man. This new folder dialog is a little wonky as well. I'm off to sleep though. Hopefully, you can get past the bugs for now.

For some weird reason, the "file is locked" disappeared when I deleted the existing "jetset___sma" file on the save folder.

Thanks a lot for this! Now to find good images for sprays.. :D

Ran into the weirdest bug in the game tonight. PC Version.

While trying to get my chievos, it randomly decided that I was playing the trial version and wouldn't let me create custom tags using the in-game editor; saying I needed to unlock the full version to use that feature. Then, 'Unlock full version' even showed up in the settings menu.

?So, I pressed unlock. The game went into a black screen of death while hum the bassline kept going in the back. Not the worst way to error out.

E: Can't blame the game. Steam Beta had crashed - though, it's interesting to see that a game can do that if it can't 'phone home.'' Must be something in Steamworks.

So, anybody have some screens of awesome custom graffiti they want to post?

Many thanks to cloudbot of course for making it simple for us luddites to add our own!

edit: hmm, still unable to import properly... was able to get one medium graffiti in the game but the small and large don't show up...
does it matter where I place the application on my computer? Also, is there a restriction on file names?

Brilliant work, straight forward and simple to use. You're awesome! Gave it a test run, but I'll have to look for more graffiti appropriate imagery without the hard edges.

Though for some reason I ran into the slowdown bug that could only be resolved by reboot again. Wonder what's up with that, there's gotta be a better solution.

Edit: Fuck I love this game. Love, love, love it. I understand the controls can be a bit finicky but once you become accustomed to the handling/physics it plays so fucking well. Couple with the soundtrack + art style that still holds up today, just amazing on all levels.

And I would cry a million tears if Sega released JSFR HD. Make it happen please!

I played very little of this on the Dreamcast and it never clicked: I never could figure out the level distribution and never got accustomed with the controls.

However, now that I'm actually playing it with camera controls, I got a handle of the controls and I remember how most levels flow now, so it's becoming an amazing experience.

I really hope I get a "select which level block you want to play" after I finish it, hopefully without timers.. :D

Game is amazing.

Guys, I'm having problems. 360 version. My game hitches up every 10-15 seconds (along with the audio, can you say ANNOYING) it essentially makes the game unplayable. I've redownloaded the game about 3 times now which seems to fix it... for about an hour until it rears its head again. Anyone else experiencing this? Anyone got any ideas as to how to fix it?

So I've sort of fixed it... Seems like JSR doesn't like my HDD or my HDD is fucked. Playing from a USB stick has fixed it.

Yes, it's your hard drive. For some reason this game seems to be very sensitive to fragmented hard drives on consoles.

In general I know from personal experience that your Xbox can get slower as your hard drive gets more fragmented over time. Recently I reformatted my 360 drive, and now the entire console runs so much faster. Friends list is super fast to load and scroll, and I had no problems playing JSR off the hard drive, although your use of a USB stick is obviously another solution.

So I got the PC version, and played a bit of the tutorial. like 10mins. And the music hitches! My HDDs are probably fragmented to hell though (Yes they are C is 28% and D is 8% ) (Its on D)

But games like ME3, Crysis 2, Aion, Skyrim, BFBC2 have no problems. Its like it keeps accessing the HDD for the music when it could easely load the whole track (maybe even game) in RAM.

I only played JSRF for like 30mins when it came out, been grooving to the soundtrack a bit before but never played more than that.
MAN does the game look great. FullHD 1080p, 8xMSAA (no AF? Can I force it in Catalyst Panel?) and locked at 30fps even on an old 4830 512MB

Looks sharp as hell! Art style still hold up, only thing that looks off is the skybox and a few textures. Been used to playing games with noAA/FXAA in 1080p because of the GPU but man nothing beats bruteforce MSAA, especially with this artstyle having those clean edges is amazing.

But yea Ill defrag tomorrow....

Have you tried restarting your pc? I don't know if it'll help, but it's like the magic fix when it comes to this game.

You can also install the game to your other hard drive if you're in the Steam beta.

I don't think they'll port over JSRF unless JSR does really really well. I'll get this on the 360 and will double dip and get it on PC when it gets a Steam sale. I am sure it'll be profitable but I think it would have to exceed their expectations significantly. I love JGR but to me JSRF is a much better game so I really hope they port it eventually.

I like JSR, but I can't agree with this.

I'm playing through it again on Steam with a 360 controller, and it really does feel like a 10 year old game. It's fun, kind of, but dated.

I'm not enjoying it anywhere near as much as I did when I was a teenager. I also couldn't get into JSRF when that was released, either.

If by dated you mean you have to use your head and there is some kind of challenge then date away!

efyu_lemonardo

May I have a cookie?
is custom graffiti something you have to unlock in the game separately for each size?
I'm beginning to suspect that could be the reason why I can only see medium sized imported images...

I actually played through most of JSRF on the 360. It was hell.

I just started it. I have the sega gt 2002/jsrf version (is there a standalone release?) and st least so far it plays smooth. Sega gt also plays smoothly, and i though it was supposed to have framerate problems. Maybe I'm just not far enough along yet.
