Mostly a thread for Canada-GAF.

Friday, CBC published a press release saying Jian Ghomeshi, star of the Canadian radio show Q (also airs in several stations in the USA), was taking a break for an "undetermined" amount of time to deal with "personal issues." Story here: http://www.cbc.ca/news/arts/jian-gh...he-air-to-deal-with-personal-issues-1.2812693

A few hours ago, CBC published another PR, this time to cut ties with Ghomeshi. Basically, they fired him. PR was short and here's the important part: "Information came to our attention recently that in CBC's judgment precludes us from continuing our relationship with Jian," Story here: http://www.cbc.ca/news/arts/jian-ghomeshi-host-of-q-no-longer-with-cbc-1.2813670

Twitter is buzzing since then, and the most common rumor is that Ghomeshi has a long history of "inappropriate conduct", mostly with women. Apparently, this is well-known among journalists and radio/TV people. Journalist Jesse Brown was apparently working on a story about Ghomeshi for months. Article apparently coming up.

Another journalist, from Macleans, says charges against Ghomeshi are coming: https://twitter.com/MartinPatriquin/status/526455562528378882

A year ago, a Toronto woman writing for feminist website XOJane published an article about "Ketih", who has a successful radio show in Canada: http://www.xojane.com/it-happened-to-me/non-date

And now Ghomeshi intends to sue the CBC for $50 million: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news...-ghomeshi/article21308822/#dashboard/follows/

I'm not a big fan of his interview style. I listen to him since they put him on late nights on WNYC and I'm driving during that time. When he asks questions, the answers are usually included, as if he wants to show how aware and knowledgeable he is.

That's unrelated though, and I'd be very surprised if the allegations prove to be correct. He always seems like a progressive, open-minded dude, and it never struck me as am act.

The xojane link is broken.

Many of the modern pop culture interviewers are like that.

wtf! Well there goes the only reason to tune into CBC radio. FUCK!!

I bet Harper has something to do with this, after that interview he had with Trudeau.

I'd post it all here, but everyone has Facebook, right? And it's SUPER long. Pretty entertaining!

I’ve been fired from the CBC because of the risk of my private sex life being made public as a result of a campaign of false allegations pursued by a jilted ex girlfriend and a freelance writer.
As friends and family of mine, you are owed the truth.
I have commenced legal proceedings against the CBC, what’s important to me is that you know what happened and why.
Forgive me if what follows may be shocking to some.
I have always been interested in a variety of activities in the bedroom but I only participate in sexual practices that are mutually agreed upon, consensual, and exciting for both partners.

TLDR: He does some freaky deaky stuff in the bedroom w/ a girl..he dumps her, she responds by saying it wasn't consensual and starts a witchhunt against him. CBC agrees with him that they can't prove it wasn't consensual, but doesn't want to be seen with a host who likes BDSM, so they fire him.

If sexual conduct isn't in his contract, the CBC is going to rightfully lose.

I'd always been pretty uncomfortable about the dude since that XOJane article last year. This isn't too surprising, but it's upsetting and I'm nervous about what's going to come out.

Honestly, considering the XOJane article, and the people coming out of the woodwork to say yea he's creepy as shit now, I bet there's more to it than his facebook page would suggest. Especially considering the reports police were at his house today.

Also remember that he hired Navigator, which is one of the most hardcore PR firms in Canada. Well known for helping Michael Bryant when he killed a cyclist not get completely crucified in the press.

Yeah, this whole thing is a mess and I'm definitely he's not looking terribly good right now.

Also, I seriously doubt the CBC, a very serious organization, would fire a star over unfounded/salacious allegations. And Ghomeshi pretending journalist Jesse Brown is attacking him because he doesn't like him is stupid. A journalist wouldn't risk his reputation and throw mud at someone because he hates him.

So, rape allegations then?

Well, that's his side of the story anyways...

He kinda dances around it in his post, but yea that is what it's sounding like.

That's the only thing I can think of, specifically rape (role)play in the bedroom.

It will be interesting to see this one as it develops. I wonder if he'll be single forever now. I just learned today that he's 46 (maybe older, depending on when the article I read was published) and tends to date much younger than his own age.

Our long national nightmare is over!

I'm just surprised this wasn't done sooner. With all the bad press circling around him, it was just a matter of time. Staying silent (and releasing a biography instead) really wasn't the best course of action.

No, what I have is a romantic abnormality, one so unbelievable that it must be hidden from the public at all cost. You see...

I've never particularly enjoyed his work. I don't think he's that great of a host.

That said, I know very little about him. Would be interesting to see where this goes.

Saw this as a comment on another site, tend to agree with it: hard to believe his claim that the CBC would fire him over private BDSM when they keep Sook Yin Lee around and all the peculiar things she's done publicly (e.g. masturbate on film).

I'm quite torn on this issue. The police visited him and rumor is that they may charge him (and have been building a case for a while?), so they probably have something? On the other hand, police have been known to press charges with flimsy evidence too.

One thing I'm glad that the Canadian media is doing is to release the information responsibly.

"I have always tried to be a good soldier and do a good job for my country."

oh fuck off, Jian.

They were going to fire her, but there was a massive uproar over it. That she was nearly fired makes his story somewhat more plausible to me.

This is too bad. I enjoyed the show, even though he laid it on REALLY thick a lot of the time. Hopefully, he's just a slightly creepy dude and not a rapist or abuser.

Keep in mind Jian was hired in a Liberal environment. Linden MacIntyre recently stepped down, and Strombo lost his show to be a talking head for two five-minute segments a week on HNIC. The Tories are openly hostile towards the CBC.

Uh-huh, what?

George left his show for a much more lucrative gig at Rogers as the host for HNIC. Why do make it sound like a demotion?

Woman claims rape, dude is already fucked.
While there are certainly some cases of people's lives being ruined by false accusations of rape, there are also many instances of actual rapists being free to lead full lives. Extrapolating either set of anecdotes to a general rule can only hinder the cause of reducing violence, mainly by driving up animosity.

I don't think he'll really be missed. Now if we had lost Tom Ashbrook, I'd be devastated.

Are you serious? You certainly aren't speaking for me. I LOVE "Q". He was basically the only reason I tuned into CBC radio anymore.

He was/is a great interviewee and I sure as fuck hope he bring the CBC down to there knee's now.
