doesn't anyone notice that since OSX launched in early 2001, it's seen 10.0, 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4 and soon 10.5?

I mean XP is up to SP2 now since it's launch late 2001.

Does apple have a microsoft-itis with all these versions? you'd think we were back in the 90 with win 95, 95 OSR2, 98, 98SE and ME...

Granted, MS does copy like...uh...Xerox...But I when I hear crap like this, I just *have* to point out that 10.4's Dashboard look like a blatant copy of Konfabulator. Search feature is new, but let's be honest, we've been heading that way for a while now. The Desktop metaphor was never perfect to begin with, and as people use their computers for more things, it's really begun to break down. Stuff like iTunes' search function was really just the first step in this regard.

And finally, I really wish that either MS or Apple would find some GUI designers who know how to tone it down.

(I won't even mention the Mac Mini because it's a complete pile)
Says the man who hasn't used one. ;)

95 = 4.0, 98 = 4.1, win2k = 5.0, xp = 5.1... Don't put too much stock in the "10" part.

Jesus. Shut the fuck up about OSX being more stable. When OSX and WinXP came out, publications online and in print did stability tests. Guess what? They came out to be almost exactly the same. Both crashed. Neither were stable. All of this "well well, I never did see my mac crash in five years LOL AM I RITE?" anecdotal evidence is annoying as hell.

Steve Jobs always talks dumb shit. Let's not forget the horrid G5 launch. "THE G5 IS THE MOST POWERFUL COMPUTER!!111111!! LOOK AT OUR PHOTOSHOP BENCHMARKS!!11". Funny, when every reputable publication online and in print reran the benchmarks, PCs creamed the G5 in almost every test.

I used to be a fan of the macs. But I got too tired of their bullshit. It's like goodcow said, what the hell is with this constant need to be upgrading your OS? Microsoft plays it straight, doesn't make bogus claims, and can design a GUI that just makes logical sense. Oh, and it doesn't have that goddamned spinning pinwheel of doom.

Apple is the Nintendo of the computer world.

<edit: fixed>

When iTunes launched, he claimed that the AAC files "sound better than songs from a CD!". What the hell?
To be fair, he was talking about AAC encodings made from a recording master compared to a CD.

Mac minis can be upgraded with Tiger, right?

I'm a bit saddened that they released the Mac mini before this OSX upgrade, but no biggie.

I did only list the 9x series (4.x), I didn't mention 2k and XP (5.x)

So within the 9x line, 4.00.950 (95), 4.00.950A (95SP1), 4.00.950B (95OSR2), 4.00.950C (95OSR2.5), 4.10.1998 (98), 4.10.2222A (98SE) and 4.90.3000 (ME).

Still, how things are versioned is pretty much up to the developer.

Sorry, I understand the disdain for the Apple fanfare, but really...that's a bit much.

I read that in an article that must have taken it out of context. My mistake.

Widgets were introduced I believe around the time of OS 7 so apple has been doing it for a while, they just stopped for some odd reason.

It makes "logical sense" because it is what you use primarily (or probably exclusively).
