John Bolton: THIS is who we're going to send to the U.N.?

In a successful move by Democrats and some Republicans, a one week delay set back the up or down vote on John Bolton, Bush's nominee to be envoy to the United Nations. For those unfamiliar, he's an extremely controversial nominee, with reports of abusive behavior in intimidating the intelligence community, as well as the White House withholding information regarding Bolton's past actions despite requests by Democrats. So who's John Bolton? See below:

Look, if Bolton successfully gets voted down, Bush is just going to send in someone more objectionable, like maybe digging up Strom Thurmond or sending in Trent Lott. Just send the retarded walrus already.

I'd never actually seen the footage of him saying that stuff. I've read it, but damn, he's off his fucking rocker.

I don't doubt it, but after watching Rice and Gonzales get off relatively easily, in addition to seeing nutjobs like Priscilla Owen take the bench, I'd love nothing more than to see at least one nomination failure, particularly when it comes to someone like Bolton. Here's to hoping Voinovich and other Republicans stand ground on this one.

Me too, but I'd like the Dems to save the one nomination they grow a spine for to be the Supreme Court. Ultimately, the UN is a fairly useless organization that doesn't potentially impact my life on a day to day basis. The Supreme Court is the exact opposite.

I agree. Bolton isn't exactly changing the status quo--the UN has been and will continue to be treated like our bitch. The judiciary battles are the real war.

For once Raoul Duke and I completely agree! What gets me though, is that I wouldn't trust this guy to do anything on my team and we're saying he's the best we got for the job? I don't get it...whatever..

The nomination is basically the administration doing Bolton a favor in return for his intervention during the 2000 elections. It's pretty obvious to anyone that this guy is not a professional and should not be doing any kind of diplomatic work.

It's just the UN. Does it even matter?
Wow, ToxicAdam and I AGREE on something?

My only problem is not that he's gonna be appointed to this post(as the post is largely meaningless, much like the UN itself), but that the Bushistas sat down, thought about it, and said, "He's our guy. We want him to represent America to the world." Sure the UN is about as useful as condoms to your average Star Wars geek, but come on. This guy is a blemish on America's face if we put him anywhere(of course, he'll fit in just fine with the rest of the blemishes, but still).

I don't think there's any real disagreement here if we're given a choice between the Democrats and moderate Republicans having to choose between allowing a nutjob to be the U.N. envoy or allowing a nutjob to be a Supreme Court justice. However, this is something that shouldn't be marginalized by such a situation; we shouldn't be allowing nutjobs anywhere if possible. The opposition to this point has been fractured, weak, and spotty; but there's some semblance of growing opposition to the administration's heavy-handed policies, including from some Republicans, and it should be encouraged. Regardless of the U.N.'s lack of effectiveness to this point (and we're certainly partly to blame for that), offering up Bolton only serves to further undermine and tarnish our international relationships and reputation.

Sadly, over half of America seems to have a fondness for voting for nutjobs.
