John Carpenter is still the man

so much underrated.

I love Carpenter's work.

All that early stuff just hits all the right notes. It's not his favourite, but The Fog just got it right, IMO (not that the others didn't).

Oh, and watch Prince of Darkness. Shit will fuck you up.

eh, it's all relative of course (and a Solo interjection is not unexpected).

All relative to what? Both films are as strong today as they were in 1978 and 1982, respectively. In fact, they're probably even stronger now due to how badly they embarass and outclass (in almost evey single facet) what passes for horror and sci-fi films these days.

Prince of Darkness is easily his most criminally underseen and underrated. That movie (and its hypnotic score) will get into your head.

Sure it was cliched. But it was enjoyable cliche.

How so?

It was overly short. Production budget of a home movie, because my god, that ghost's costume design was DREADFUL. As you said, the film was cliche'd as fuck. It relied on cheap scares and gore, in place of a legitimately scary atmosphere. The characters were shit.
The twist ending was lifted straight from the movie Identity.

I raved about Prince of Darkness in another thread, but got shot down for being an outdated old man. I guess that's why I safely call it "relative" now, to avoid the butthurt.

You should get back in there and teach those young whippersnappers what's what.

I posted the "message from the future" clip and got a bunch of LOLs.
I literally shit my pants when I saw that the first time.

I'm ashamed to admit I only saw The Thing last year. I'm not ashamed to admit that it blew me the fuck away, and has made me detest bad CG more than ever.

Just re-read my post. Great was the wrong word. 'Eh, not bad' is the right phrase.

Same boat! I saw it for the first time earlier this year and was gob smacked.

As well you should have been. Prince of Darkness would indeed be considered a classic but it's heavily weighed down by Simon & Simon's mustache.

I just rewatched Prince of Darkness. The menacing atmosphere throughout the film is great.

Has anyone here seen Body Bags? My sister and I loved that shit when we were kids.

I love John Carpenter, but I don't watch The Thing often.

Halloween is my favourite, with Prince of Darkness and In the Mouth of Madness closing off my top 3.

None of his movies aged well, but damn were they a blast in the 80s. I used to think Prince of Darkness was the shit back then.

Are you serious? The Thing is absolutely timeless. Halloween is holding up great too.

Other stuff like Assault on Precinct 13, Prince of Darkness and They Live are remnants of their times but they're still highly enjoyable.

edit: sorry I didn't read past your post, this has been replied to already.

As many have said, The Thing and Halloween have aged extremely well. Those are his two classics that actually seem to get better as time goes on because people try to imitate or top them and never do.

My wife had never seen The Thing before and was never a horror movie person, but I finally convinced her to watch it a few months ago. She was blown away by how awesome it was, and commented how well most of the effects hold up today.

I am going to initiate her into Halloween starting tomorrow when we go to the theater for it. And I think she is more excited about seeing The Thing in theaters than I am.

The fact that Carpenter directed an Oscar nominated performance is a testament to that movie.

Shit, even Vampires has some cool moments that make it worth watching more than once. BTW if anyone has FearNET on their cable system check out his Postmortem interview. Lots of cool shit in it.

I honestly didn't mind the ward.

Yeah, it was a bit cliche, but still enjoyable.

even if it did steal it's idea from identity

ah. beaten and beaten.

People talk so much about how Alien, Aliens, and Blade Runner hold up(for good reason), yet most forget about The Thing. Hard for me to place it above or below those mentioned, but man is it one of my favorites!

I'm probably the only human alive that liked his remake of Village of the Damned. Got Superman and Luke Skywalker fighting little kids.

So pleased to see the love for In the Mouth of Madness. I found that movie very effective, and scarier than even The Thing, in its own way.

Somehow, I've never seen The Prince of Darkness. I'll be sure to fix that tonight!
