John McCain has Brain Cancer

The man has brain cancer and is dying. Civility even in the face of politics you disagree with is something that takes precedence over all.he last thread we had on this was gross and this one seems to continue that trend. I wish the man well and hope he's able to overcome this tremendous hardship.

We can just create a seperate thread later for directing his policies and philosophies. Dragging those through the mud in a thread about fucking brain cancer isn't the most tasteful way of discussing it.

So once again we're going to try and chalk up people losing vital healthcare to simple political differences. That is NOT what this is. If it were that simple you would be right, but it's not.

So your regret over McCain's illness is contingent on his recovering from said illness? If not explicitly logically faulty, you'll grant that sounds a bit odd.

Not really. He squandered his time and chose a path of being as inhuman as possible. In the twilight of his career, in a situation where he would be untouchable, he had a clear ability to do the right thing and he willingly chose against it. Obviously because time has now starkly come into play, he has less of it to potentially right the ship.

Just because he is sick does not absolve him of the majority of his actions. So if this is it, I will judge him on that. And yeah if he recovers and does better, I'd be ecstatic to recognize him for that. If he gets better and continues on his current political course, then that's the worst outcome.

Nothing illogical about that.

Except it literally does have everything to do with brain cancer, breast cancer, every cancer that millions of Americans will eventually get that McCain and his party would have fucked over.
It has everything to do with McCain specifically getting brain cancer?

So maybe I should just say that he had it coming because fuck the GOP, right?!

If you only see it in such simple terms, sure. Sorry you don't feel empathy for those who may not feel it for you. You being a dick in return doesn't make you a better person.

Read my post on my thoughts about McCain.

There is empathy for the good in him. I wished him time with his family in recovery.

But the dude sold Americans out.

Wanting good health care for everyone while McCain doesn't..... but please lecture me more.

Yes because it hopefully means he never returns to politics to continue supporting his terrible party robbing people of healthcare for their cancers for a tax break on rich folks. Cancer sucks but I am not sad at all to see him go. He has earned no empathy from me, I do feel for his family. That;'s about it.

It also doesn't make you a worse person as you're trying to push.

So he was a shitty politician that seems to be a requirement nowadays.

He still served and was a pow that's commendable enough for me to not cheer for his death.
What do you mean it "seems to be a requirement nowadays"

Also you don't gain respect automatically by serving in the armed forces, my brother is in the SEALs, my gf's sister and brother are in the army and all 3 of them have told me plenty of awful stories about trigger-happy sociopaths for me to automatically respect someone just because they've served this country.

That being said, his service was over 30 years ago and he's washed away almost all of the good will he's had from being a POW. Also very few people are actually cheering for his death but ok

It's possible and even okay to hold competing impulses and conflicting ideas.

Like, John McCain sucks, but I'm still sorry he has brain cancer. He does suck, though. A lot! He's terrible, actually. I hope he pulls through and comes to realize what a wicked little shitbird he is. Because I wouldn't wish brain cancer on anyone ... even John McCain, who sucks, remember, and should not ever have been in a position of power in American governance.

(Get well soon, asshole.)

The rolling stone article on him remains unretracted.

I hope he recovers since he's still one of my favorite GOP politicians.

On a related note, I'm genuinely concerned about who Ducey will be replacing him with. Hint: whoever they are they'll be much worse.

It's possible and even okay to hold competing impulses and conflicting ideas.

Not much more to say here.

You point fingers at posters in this thread for being "silly" and your rejoinder is a bunch of intellectually dishonest nonsense.
"Obviously, it's because he's famous." Gee, thanks. Now, why is he famous, Chadtwo? What is he famous for?

A: John McCain is a politician. We are discussing his illness because he is a notable politician. His politics cannot be divorced from a large discussion about his health because the only reason we care about his health is because we know of him through his politics. Demanding others ignore that aspect of his life when it directly impacts so many of us is as "silly" as the comments you've complained about.

We're already resorting to accusations of intellectual dishonesty?! C'mon man, we've exchanged like two posts!

At any rate, dress it up as you'd like, the reason we are discussing McCain's illness is because he is famous. That he is famous because of politics is incidental to the reason said illness has made the news, and the claim that his politics cannot be divorced from his health is entirely separate from this fact, and a point to which I have already responded. To try to use McCain's fame, and the attendant coverage that his illness has gotten because of this fame, as evidence that his politics are a necessary part of his health is a logical jump, and, yes, some might say intellectually dishonest. I will not, because I don't presume to know anything about your intentions and the notion that you are willfully trying to be slick is something I have no reason to believe.

By the way, you seem particularly irritated by my earlier use of the word "silly." If you have taken offense, I'll gladly go back and revise my comments to something more suited to your sensibilities.

That really sucks to hear. I remember when I had so much respect for him even though I never agreed with his politics. I hope that he can recover.

Ah, gotta love a good smokescreen, "I'm not gonna reveal who I'm actually talking about" post. So, who exactly are you calling cowards here?

I personally love the horsecrap that the people taking the non-standard path of pretending to like Mccain and that hes some saint all of a sudden are the Cowards here. Nah, those are the people speaking their minds not giving a fuck that it isn't going to be the standard reply.

The cowards are the ones ignoring the 90 posts detailing the horrible shit this man votes for that inflicts shit JUST AS BAD on MILLIONS of others and still finding some way to wash it aside and go "Hope he gets better" knowing damn well you probably wouldnt care either way.

Im not for this pretending shit. I wasn't a fan of him yesterday, Im not a fan of his today and I refuse to fake it just because he got sick. His policies and lack of backbone are currently and continue to hurt millions. I also wont go overboard or out of my way to be more disrespectful towards him than I would on any other day tho so... Basically, whatever.

I love this post.

I really don't understand the calls for civility. People should react how they want to react. Many people have felt directly threatened by McCain's actions. They really don't owe him love, sympathy or anything really. I wasn't sad when Scalia died for example. I hope he recovers but the diagnosis sounds terminal, he should enjoy the time with his family. No one else needs to feel that way though.

Yes, maybe we should hope all GOPers get brain cancer! That will solve our problems

Great post, Shake. Great post.

That he became less rebelliousness in his old age, under the possible influence of a brain tumor, doesn't discount the entirety of a man's 30 year senate career.

the man literally voted with W 95% of the time, so yeah, his weirdness in the last year doesn't excuse that

The man's a hero and has shown us all the power of a will to survive. I wonder, though, whether it's time for him to be with his family.

Yes, maybe we should hope all GOPers get brain cancer! That will solve our problems

Did I say that? No I said fuck him, his terrible politics and his shitty party. That said I won't cry for any other GOP politicians getting cancer either. They don't get my sympathy when they want to hurt me over and over again.

He wasn't going to vote for the abomination of a bill the Senate cobbled together in a secret room, mostly because ending the funding for the medicaid expansion would particularly fuck over AZ, which expanded Medicaid over two decades ago. Every AZ resident living in poverty is covered by Medicaid.

No telling whether whether he would vote for something almost as bad but he was heavily leaning no on this one.

Lol, if it would have gone to the floor to vote, I promise you, I have no doubt in my mind, he would have voted yes.

I hope he recovers and gains newfound empathy from his experience for all of us not fortunate enough to be a senator.

The man was literally tortured. If that doesn't change your perspective of things, not sure what cancer at the end of a well lived life will do for that insight.

This place is awful sometimes.

I know, GAF and it's power to deny Americans health care and all.

So awful.

I have seen no one wanting his ability to have surgeries and recover taken away. But it is ok to acknowledge his actions. They are his actions, afterall.

The man was literally tortured. If that doesn't change your perspective of things, not sure what cancer at the end of a well lived life will do for that insight.

he was tortured and then mocked for his torture by the current president who he supports

anyone thinking his perspective is gonna be changed by this... I almost wish I had your optimism

Talking away healthcare is not different political view please stop saying this.

"I am going to vote for something that will take away the essential health options for most, directly and indirectly causing many to die and/or have prolonged suffering as they do."

"Well, I don't agree, but I still respect that opinion."

Boy.

So once again we're going to try and chalk up people losing vital healthcare to simple political differences. That is NOT what this is. If it were that simple you would be right, but it's not.
So that gives us the moral high ground to low key celebrate the suffering of someone from an opposing political party? I mean at some point here we can apply your logic to anyone who supports the Republican party and similarly dismiss or belittle any suffering they might incur as well. My question to you is: where do we draw the line?

His Republican vote means just as much as any other citizens. Now do we blame them as well when they have medical issues? Or are we only allowed to act this way towards politicians? It's a fair question to ask.

That Voltaire quote has aged like rancid shit hasnt it

Hoping for a speedy recovery for him.

I will always respect this man for enduring the horrific Vietnamese POW camps for 6 years.

Politics be damned, the dude is an American hero.

His senate vote means a lot more than a republican vote.

He served and was a pow in an illegal war in which the US comitted war crimes against the indigenous population of Vietnam. How commendable of him to defend his motherland like that.

I am not cheering his death. I wouldn't cheer even Trump's death. But let's avoid the whitewashing of his legacy.

John made some really odd and selfish decisions over the last few years and each and every time he did, I looked at him and wondered "Does he really not think he's going to die one day?"

And there it is. People seem to forget. This all ends one day and all we have is the decisions we make and the people we hurt in the process.

You're right. He's a terrorist.
What do you call someone who tries to kill innocent people on a large scale? I'm open to suggestions. Terrorist worked for the mood I was in when I wrote that. I've certainly felt terrorized by the GOP since last year.

Would serial killer do? Or does it only count if one physically does the killing?

Help me out here.

...and fuck his grieving family!
I don't know his family. I don't even know their names, or what they look like. I haven't thought or commented about them at all. There are grieving families all across America and the vast majority of them aren't as fortunate as McCain or his loved ones.

If I were in the habit of spreading empty internet platitudes and cookie cutter "thoughts and prayers" I'd start with them.

Because hoping someone who has BRAIN CANCER gets better automatically equates to me hoping his political views are successful.
I don't care if he recovers or does not, assuming both outcomes lead to his exit from American politics. However, if that cancer is the primary thing preventing him from stripping other Americans with cancer from their healthcare, I refuse to pretend that I do not see it as a positive thing for the country and specifically my family.

Maybe everyone should spend less time policing each other's feelings and comments. People are allowed to have different perspectives. If you can't discuss those perspectives without insulting other posters, you should probably find somewhere else to be.

You said you're happy he has it so he won't return. Which suggests you view GOPers getting brain cancer as a positive thing

If he retired in perfect health without ever getting to help his party with their terrible plans I'd have much the same reaction.
