Johnny Depp’s “Transcendence” bombed last night as expected, taking in just $4.8 million. That means the $150 million movie will likely take in around $12 million for the weekend.

This is Depp’s second major flop at the box office, following the catastrophic “Lone Ranger.” And now this poses an important question: can Depp open a movie that isn’t “Pirates of the Caribbean”? The answer is No. He’s made zillions from the Disney adventure movies.

But Depp has so limited himself as Jack Sparrow that he’s not known for anything else. His last real movie that was a hit and brought him some critical acclaim was “Finding Neverland” some ten years ago.

Other than that his resume is a list of “almosts”– “Public Enemies” and “Sweeney Todd” fit that bill. His work with Tim Burton is spotty– “Alice in Wonderland” was a big hit, but not just because of Depp. “Dark Shadows” was awful.

He (and Leonardo DiCaprio) are among a small group of very precious leading men who don’t do romantic comedies. When he did try to do something in that vein, Depp failed miserably with “The Tourist.”

Depp’s other big outing this year will be in the fall when he plays the Wolf in Rob Marshall’s “Into the Woods” musical film adaptation. The next time Depp is seen after that will be in 2015 as mobster Whitey Bulger in “Black Mass.”

The only good thing I can remember Depp doing in the last 5-10 years is Rango. Ever since the Pirates flicks he's been in so much shit, and phoning it in.

Who in their right mind greenlights a 150 million dollar movie about artificial intelligence, helmed by a first time director?

Pretty much everyone I know has had enough of Depp. I haven't watched any of the PotC films or any of his newer Burton collaborations for the same reason. Transcendence looks pretty shit too.

If you've never watched a pirates movie, or pretty much anything he's done in a long while, how are you sick of him?

I'm always told Johnny Depp is some amazing actor. Yet I've never seen it. He's fine. He's not bad, but I certainly don't see his 'star power' appeal.

Seems like the rest of the world is agreeing with it.

I knew there was a movie called Transcendence coming out this weekend but had no idea what it was about and had no clue that Johnny Depp was even in it.

It's not good news for Depp, but the one who is going to feel this the most is Wally Pfister. This was one of the most anticipated feature film directorial debuts for a while, not in the least of which for his association with Christopher Nolan and taking on a film that would be in that director's wheelhouse, and this has been a massive strikeout. He really should have started on something a lot smaller.

i feel like he hasn't really been relevant in a long time...even the pirates films are carried more by their spectacle than by his performance.

edit: nevermind, dumb question

You can't escape the adverts, spoofs, constant references, fancy dress pirates or the impressions. I have also seen the odd ten minutes of the pirate films and the way he acts in them just pisses me off. These are why I haven't watched them.

Loved him in Ed Wood, Edward Scissorhands, The Ninth Gate etc.

Depp should either rethink his career or just go Full Burton and ignore everything that is not a Burton movie/Pirates. Pirates of the Caribbean was the the death of his career really. He shouldn't have gotten popular.

Wait, how was The Tourist in the vein of a romantic comedy?
Yeah, there is nothing romantic or comedy about it. Benny & Joon is about the only Depp movie that falls in the romantic comedy description.

Tom Cruise? Will Smith (without his son)?

Yeah, he's all for the money. In that regard I have a lot of respect for Brad Pitt who makes movies because he wants to and puts a lot of money in smaller projects.

As much as I grew up loving Burton, his stuff has been pretty terrible recently, and I think one reason why is that he works with all the same people. I know he's married to Helena Bonham Carter, but I hate her and I'm so sick of seeing her and Depp in everything. Depp can't sell a movie anymore, and when you look back at it I'm not sure he ever could outside of Jack Sparrow. He's a pretty talented actor who at some point stopped taking interesting roles. I wouldn't be surprised if he has a late career resurgence, but he's got to take some risks. Maybe a role in a TV show like true detective or something.

Better hope overseas digs it. Got a long way to go to get to that $100 million budget, let alone actual profitability.

I have never, ever heard of this film.

I was interested at first just 'cause of the Nolan connections, but I didn't even realize it came out this weekend. It just never generated hype and there didn't seem to be a big marketing push. Just kind of thrown out there.

Bonham Carter is my movie kryptonite.
