Johnny Depp Bombs in “Transcendence”

The level of ignorance in some posts here knows no bounds.

Depp is an absolute fantastic actor, whoever says otherwise doesn't know a crap about great performances.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape
Arizona Dream
Dead Man
Sweeney Todd
Donnie Brasco
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Sleepy Hollow
Blow
From Hell
Secret Window
Ed Wood

In all of them Depp's acting is stellar, and except for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and to some degree Sleepy Hollow, none of them relies on being weird like Jack Sparrow's character.

I agree, in the last decade his career has been plagued with truly bad decisions. I don't know who's to blame, him, his agent, most probably both, but the thing is... his career is in no way over. By Hollywood standards he's still "young" and outside Neogaf, nobody calls him a shitty actor.

The man has plenty of talent, I hope he becomes more careful when choosing future roles.
This.

$150 million is nothing to Hollywood these days, budgets like this with no / small returns will be the downfall of the industry. This is also an original idea right? Well to a point anyway, its not based from a book or comic etc. Finally a new, fresh idea and it tanks (maybe)

You can only put Johnny Depp in white makeup and mascara for so long. He needs to take a break from movies, regroup, and start choosing different roles that will actually challenge him. He just picks the same dark, weird, twisted guy in just about everything he's in. At this point he's no different than Bruce Willis continuously picking action roles.

Pre-PotC Johnny Depp was awesome. Post-PotC Depp has been boring and mostly terrible. All the hype he got from doing Jack Sparrow did something to him imo. After so many good roles what made him into a huge star was playing a drunken pirate. Maybe he doesn't feel like it's worth it to make an effort anymore.

I don't think anyone really disagrees with you. If anything these threads occur because Depp has been colossally disappointing, i.e. he's not living up to his billing.

Depp was a great actor. He may have been disappointing lately, but I think he still got it. He just needs to find the one perfect role :(

Gaming side's doom and gloom seeping over, I see. Warner Bros. can absorb this bomb with little to no issue.

he had a good run

you forgot the part where the movie is terrible.

that seems like something that would be used on the gaming side for resolution debate between PS4 & XBOX ONE

Haha. PS4 on the left, right?

On topic, I wanted to see this flick until Ted Chiang came to my college and gave a talk about folk biology, which basically destroyed the idea of the singularity, downloadable consciousness, etc. I'll wait for a rental even though Rebecca Hall is hot.

Tim Burton/Helena Bonham Carter/"Gothic"-esque style movie/Jack Sparrow-type-quirky-mannerisms-in-said-role has poisoned his career.

Johnny needs to pull a Matt McConaughey. True Detective anyone?

He's probably entering the tail end of his career as a leading man, not trying to start it (like McConaughey) and will probably make like $50 million from the next Pirates movie...he doesn't really need to do anything. The Tourist was just as big, if not a bigger bomb than this and it didn't cause any shift in his career.

That's one hell of a budget to drop on Nolan's cinematographer, a boring premise, and growing BO poison. Come on Warner Bros., you didn't become the god-king of movie studios by making these decisions.

Well hes been absoloutly rubbish for years now. Seriously he must have had a serious brain injury that affected his decision making. It all the started with those garbage pirates films.

Ever since I listened to the actors commentary with Depp on Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas the guy could make 100 more shitty movies and I could care less.

He's fucking badass.

That's what happens when you stick around with Tim Burton.

People forget you with all those horrible movies that director makes.

Bonham Carter is actually super talented - Howard's End, Fight Club, King's Speech, lots of Shakespeare, etc.

It's stupid Tim Burton and Depp that drags her into all their dumb shit.

Bonham's recent career bums me out way more than Depp's.

She's a great actor, uniquely beautiful, and incredibly witty and smart...

And she'll forever be tied to whatever shit Tim Burton half-asses next.

It's a crying shame.

He already got it. Jack Sparrow.

If you think his movies are bad you should listen to his audio commentaries.

could be because of marketing... i don't even know what "Transcendence" is or what it's about. i haven't even seen a preview

Because they're friends. I think he once said he'd have sex with a platypus on camera if Burton wanted him to.

I consider Sweeney Todd his best work, by the by. (Both the director and the actor.)

Honestly I think its time Depp aimed for the role of a villain. Sweeney Todd showed he has promise in this manner. He just needs the right villain role to get the part of though. Most villains these days fall flat and are about shock more than psychology. Still...I think its time to turn heel or go stale.

I don't think it's that. I think he's a victim of believing his own hype. Every time he puts out an interview or stars in a film, he plays up the same "mystic/quirky" stereotype he's been phoning in for years, even before Pirates. The fact that he divorced his wife and shacked up with a blond starlet also seems to have put some off - it's like he's doing it more for tabloid fodder than anything else.

Nothing wrong with being a pirate. People love those movies (not getting any kind of.awards) but the movies earn a lot and it's cool to be a character people like
