It's like he needs a Marvel franchise to boost his career?

Same here. Maybe the studio realised there is no need to waste money on big PR push for the film since it's going to flop either way. Depp needs to start making smaller films again.

Its been marketed all over TV for the last couple weeks.

$150m for this shit? This is almost as bad as giving first time director $175m for that horrid 47 Bomba with Keanu Reeves last year. This will probably make even less money.

As for Johnny Depp, I no longer cry about his waste of talent. I honestly believed he was one of the better Hollywood actors of his generation, but he seems content on doing gay pirate routines, Burton-esque caricatures, and Hunter S Thompson impressions for the rest of his life.

It had one of the worst trailers i've ever seen for a movie. Like something you would expect for some low budget movie. Also at least where i've seen it's had basically no presence whatsoever. Little advertising and it's been spoken about nowhere. That plus it has been straight up panned in reviews.

50m for marketing likely.

Isn't that usually counted separately?

I assume it has been heavily marketed in the UK at least. I don't watch much live television but always seem to see the trailer when I do.

4 words for any of you dummies doubting Depps abilities : fear and fucking loathing. Is this board that young or just ignorant?

150 million on a spiritual successor to Lawnmower Man, ffs Hollywood. That's like the same budget as Captain America.

I would pay to see Depp as Dr. Strange. Him and RDJ in Avengers 3? Do it.

Depp has NEVER been a headlining star. I never have understood how he ever got that reputation. Outside Pirates of the Caribbean and Alice in Wonderland, he has nothing but a long string of bombs or disappointments. And I would argue he happened to be in the right place at the right time for those movies. As someone said, the Pirates movies are about the spectacle. Alice in Wonderland was coming off Avatar, when everyone wanted a new 3D fix.

Every time a new movie comes out with Depp as the star, it disappoints or flat out fails and everyone feigns confusion, "how could a Johnny Depp movie fail?"

There was also a time when people thought he was incredibly handsome but all I saw was someone looking rather drunk and homeless and showerless.

Surprised at the amount of Depp hate here, he hasn't done much of note for the past few years but I thought he was a good actor in the earlier burton crossovers and pirates. Doubtful he'll do anything great again though.

going by rotten tomatoes, it's 13% worse than lawmnmower man.

i don't think anybody doubts his actual abilities, just his give a shit quotient. fear and loathing was in 1998

Kinda sick of Johnny Depp too, but this article is hilarious. He's not the reason why the movie bombed. It bombed because nobody knows what the fuck this is.

I don't know what they did with the advertising. Almost nobody I know has even heard this film exists. Not exactly Depp's fault.

I could go for this.

It fits well if he toned it down a tad which we know he can do.

They've been pushing it quite a lot over here in the UK whenever I've been to the cinema the last few weeks and I seen massive billboards for it all over the place the last two weeks so people know.

i hadn't seen a preview for this until this morning.

and i actually didnt hate lone ranger. nobody else liked it?

It's a very good film watched it with the family at xmas and everyone liked it. It was done in by cowardice by disney execs just like John Carter, another film that Disney execs seemed to abandon and not know what to do with. I hope they got a box of their belongings and got told to leave the studio lot. Gutless gits. Once the critics smelled that fear they went for the throat on both films.

I don't blame them a 'bomb' is more interesting to write about than a hit film. Especially when it cost a ton to make and had big actors.

The level of ignorance in some posts here knows no bounds.

Depp is an absolute fantastic actor, whoever says otherwise doesn't know a crap about great performances.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape
Arizona Dream
Dead Man
Sweeney Todd
Donnie Brasco
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Sleepy Hollow
Blow
From Hell
Secret Window
Ed Wood

In all of them Depp's acting is stellar, and except for Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and to some degree Sleepy Hollow, none of them relies on being weird like Jack Sparrow's character.

I agree, in the last decade his career has been plagued with truly bad decisions. I don't know who's to blame, him, his agent, most probably both, but the thing is... his career is in no way over. By Hollywood standards he's still "young" and outside Neogaf, nobody calls him a shitty actor.

The man has plenty of talent, I hope he becomes more careful when choosing future roles.

Depp isn't a box office draw, it's only a matter of time before he stops commanding 20m paychecks for movies—and that'll either be the best thing that happens to his career, because it'll force him to try again, or he'll just retire. either way, he wins.
