Well look, later in the series he starts using the correct transcriptions for stuff like Crazy Diamond and Polnareff, right? So I think you could make an argument for using AC/DC and stuff because he was inconsistent with his naming. Or you could go the other way to try to protect yourself from a lawsuit (which I still think is stupid) by making all or some of the names have weird spellings.

I'd personally go with AC/DC and Crazy Diamond for consistency's sake, and because gibberish names are hard for a reader to keep track of. Simpler is better.

Edit: Zeppeli would be an outlier, but that's a fair trade, imo.

As for consistency, it's interesting to note that pretty much everyone in the first two parts -except- the Euro Pillar Men is either using a modified name (Robert E. O. Speedwagon or Joseph Joestar, say) or one with an in-plot explanation (Santana). Hence why they're at the top of the list for trademark fixing.

Yes, for my purposes simpler is better and lawsuit worries from bands are way down the list of lawsuit worries.
Zeppeli is fairly unique in that it was changed in Japanese to drop the N as well.

Not that unique: there would also be Tonpetty's "tonpeti" (instead of "tomu peti"), Straizo's final "O", Esidisi's shorter vowels, Wamuu's long "U" sound...

Yeah but Zeppeli is pretty much the only one that sounds significantly different in English and appears in multiple series. Easier to just call them by band names than start out with gibberish and have to switch to band names later. And I'd guess that the changed band names would sound much less awkward in Japanese than English.

I can understand why you'd disagree, though.

I'd argue that since there's a sibilant there, it sounds more similar to Straits than Zeppeli does to Zeppelin, but that could go either way. For my above reasons though, I'd personally prefer Straits. Although, if you wanted to go the messed-up spelling route, I'd think Straights might be a better localization than Straizo. You could even go with SE/DC instead of AC/DC. =P
 
Speaking of Santana, here's a plot-hole...I'm pretty sure that Cars and co. refer to him as Santana, even though they wouldn't be aware of that name since Stronheim invented it.

I've gotta ask the question -- what about this show do you guys like? Not trying to be antagonistic, and I'm keeping up with it myself, but sometimes I'm a bit baffled about what makes this a classic. It's crazy and visually snazzy and over-the-top, and I can appreciate that to an extent, but there are a plethora of characters completely lacking personality, nuance-free dialogue, and ridiculous contrivances which make it really difficult for me to enjoy this. I'm liking Battle Tendency a bit more, but Phantom Blood was just painfully hard to watch.

It's soooo ridiculous. And part 1 was still easier to watch than it was to read.

Part 3 has a very large, colorful cast of characters put into utterly ridiculous fights and situations, and it's often quite silly to watch how they get out of a fight. It doesn't usually come down to who hits the other dude harder. It's not anything you'd have to think about too hard, but it's crazy stylish. And the juxtaposition of stylish, pretty characters with the heavy levels of disturbing gore and body horror has a particular shock to it. It's also great at ramping up tension.

Various reasons, really.

Hmm, you're right, JoJo brings the name up...weird, I swear I remember them going like "Santana was just a child compared to us!" at one point.

Just found it weird they wouldn't use the guy's real name, haha.

Nuanced dialogue is overrated. If it ain't bombastic, it ain't worth my time. JoJo is a franchise that lives off the rule of cool, and is all the better for it. You don't think setting up a grenade attached to a bunch of other grenades is ridiculously badass?

At points, I'd honestly have no clue what was going on if not for the characters explaining everything. Yeah, he could probably be more subtle about it, but nothing in the series is subtle. Tonio Trussardi from part 4 is a good example, and I'd go into that scene but spoilers. =x
 
It's really the way Araki plans fights (sometimes apparently on the fly) that attracts me to the series, the battles from Part 2 onward, once Araki began to shift away from simply British Fist of the North Star, get really strategic, unique, and sometimes a bit...I guess you could say cerebral?

Well it is apparently one of the establishing Manga series of its particular genre. That makes it a classic by definition. As someone completely alien to Jojo, I'd have agreed with you on the quality front if this was still Phantom Blood, but Joseph makes Battle Tendency.

Nah, Araki always has his fights planned out when one actually starts. The pieces are always in place from the beginning for an epic, strategic turn-around that rarely feels like an asspull or unbelievable.

It's the plot where he just makes shit up as he goes along (and sometimes forgets stuff).

IIRC, I remember them just saying “He“ or “our brother“ and then it‘d say “(Santana)“ so it‘s not really them calling him that.

Eh, there was pretty good stuff there. Dio being the precursor to all the needless fabulous posing in Battle Tendency and that final episode especially.

i'VE Been seeing A LOT of (safe) JoJo fanart on boorus and the like so I'm assuming for the most part it's doing rather well. How're the Bluray/DVD sales so far?
 
Ah, yes, it does seem to be 26, actually... Looks like 3 episodes/disc up to volume 8, and 2 episodes on volume 9, based on the prices.

Nonexistant considering the first volume isn't out until the end of the month :V

Still, last time I checked pre-orders were doing ok.
 
Thanks for your responses. I guess my main beef with this series is that it's over-the-top in a way that's not very engaging. Almost all of the small-time villains are either pigheaded and visually disgusting, or screeching at the top of their lungs, and there are ridiculous moments of deus ex machina, like in one of the latest episodes where
Joseph is falling into the well with Pillar Man and BAM! GUESS WHAT! IT'S EXACTLY NOON AND THE SUN IS PERFECTLY POSITIONED OVER THE WELL!
The fights lack an internal logic, and so when something ridiculous happens with no clues of it ever happening -- like the grenade thing where he somehow arranges all of the grenades and the thread connecting them in a stupendously short amount of time -- there's no payoff for me.

If, as cosmicblizzard says, the fights become more cerebral as time goes on, then I can deal with the rest of my grievances. I did watch a couple scenes from the old Stardust Crusaders anime, and immensely enjoyed two in particular: the D'arby episode, and the final battle. Those are over-the-top in a way that I can get behind; the first one, in particular, I thought was brilliant. And I do admit that Joseph is making Battle Tendency for me as well. He's one-dimensional, but he's fun to watch, and he still has more personality than Phantom Blood's entire cast combined... perhaps sans Dio.

This plot hole has the dumbest solution. His name actually is Santana, and Stronheim by chance just gave him the exact same name.
 
Just watched the new episode of Gintama...

Gintoki does the Joseph-style "RUN AWAY!" right at the beginning, haha. Maybe it's a coincidence, but Sugita voices both Gintoki and Joseph so...

I just checked, and Joseph is actually the first one to bring up the name Santana to them, so no plothole I guess. And again, I don't think they actually ever mention him by name anyways.

What annoys me more is that they call Mexico, well, Mexico :T

I am pretty sure they said that once, it's in the manga though.
And I read the manga twice so I'm pretty sure of it.
Araki don't give a fuck.
 
Personally, I recommend MMM subs and GetBack. GG takes too many liberties with the dialogue for my tastes, and Nutbladder is alright, but it's been pretty slow lately.
