I'm not a big anime watcher (all I've seen are Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Afro Samurai) but I watched the first episode since this thread has been on the front page of the OT for weeks. I don't know if it's standard for Japanese shows or not, but it's very strange to me how they always say how they feel instead of showing it. Other than that I liked it. The credit song by Yes was pretty surprising.

FYI Part 1 was released in the mid 1980s in Japan and the way the dialog is written in this ep. would be the same and was fine for the time. Furthermore such things tend to be common in the JoJo series. I'm reading Part 6 and in one panel the main character used the word 'millimeter' in 3 sentences lol.

They'll probably use that name but it has nothing to do with copyright.

It's pronounced the same too, so I'm not sure how anyone could get fooled.
 
I believe it was mentioned somewhere in this very thread that Prince was a definite no-go, which'll come up later.

Not really related to the lawsuit thing, but I'm glad they picked such a long song for the ED, if they had to have one for the entire I-II block. We've got, two minutes of song left to play with for the rest of the series?
 
Re-reading the manga and watching this, it's crazy how faithful it is towards the manga. So much love is going towards this show. Seriously.
 
lol I wonder how Jonathan and W. Zeppelli will play.

Also I hope they won't cut much of the training montage.
 
I just sat here for the past 4 hours to catch up with the anime. It's a bit disorientating, considering the only Jojo I remember from the past was the Jojo's Bizarre Adventure from the Dreamcast fighting game, all of that "ZE WORUDO" and whatnot. Does the game take place in a later timeline than where the anime is?

Yep the Dreamcast game is about the third part of the manga, while right now the anime is doing the first two parts.

Jojo is composed of multiple stories tied under the same family tree (and some branches).

Miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight be spoiler-ish for those that whose first exposure to the series is with the current anime @_@.
Although you do get to see what Araki's workplace looks like.
 
I was reading through the "Lost Media Wiki", and one of the entries was the Phantom Blood movie. Shown in theaters but never released to video due to Araki absolutely hating it. I can understand since they made the big mistake of NOT including Speedwagon. Absolutely criminal.

Did anyone here manage to see it though? The trailer had pretty good animation.

Thetrin saw it during its theatrical run and told me it was awesome. I've been salty ever since! Less so now that Phantom Blood has a TV adaptation though.

I wonder where the bit about Araki hating it comes from though. I mean, even if he did, I just can't picture him saying as much. Sounds like it could very well be internet lore to me.

Well, I didn't but there are the leaked first 15 minutes on Youtube without sound (it's from the recording company IIRC).

Due to negative reaction from fans and Hirohiko Araki himself, the film was never released on any home video format.
No official information was announced regarding the reason as to why the film was dropped. However many fans who saw the film have noted their opinion as to why the film was so poorly done. The main reasons include:

*The character, Robert Edward O Speedwagon, one of Araki's favorite characters, was almost removed from the story entirely, appearing only on the Ogre Street battle.
*The characters Poco, Dire, and Straights were also not featured. No fight occured between the protagonist and Tarkus and Bruford, as they were already dead. Naturally, this also means that Dire does not throw the hamon rose.
*The concept of Hamon was not explained clearly.
*The movie was too short (Approx. 90 minutes), condensed, and basically "destroyed the original story".

Hey Erigu, what do you think about Gyro becoming Jayro?That's what Tonkam used for Steel Ball Run...

Their reasoning is that Jairo is a real name while Gyro is not.

Yeah he even explained that, so it makes even less sense to me.Apparently people in the 19th century didn't have nicknames.

I used to pronounce Gyro like Giro so I guess it taught me the correct pronunciation at least.

(and since we're talking about that: wouldn't an English pronunciation of "Jayro" be closer to the "jéro" the translator was trying to avoid? the "Y" doesn't seem all that helpful to me...)

For what it's worth, I seem to remember seeing a "Jairo" spelling on the character's horse, in one (color? I think?) illustration, at some point. But I've also seen the name spelled as "Gyro" on several occasions, and considering the character's abilities, I think it's a fair bet that was the idea.
 
Also I'm sorry to tell you but in their Battle Tendency summary (for the reedition of Stardust Crusaders) they went with "AC/DC, Wham, Cars".

Yeah I saw it too, but I think Gyro was used for figurines etc...

I googled the bits you posted and stumbled upon that one, too:

I think these were meant to be examples of "over japanization" that purists supposedly want.
Yeah I'm not sure what was that about, I think it's a reference to Esidesi and co.

And yes the name of the translator is nowhere to be found, it's been that way for a while, I think since the end of Golden Wind.

I'm looking at my SBR volume and all it says is "Traduction, adaptation, lettrage et maquette : editions Tonkam "
