Great segment, too.

daaaamn

i love how they sort of disarmed this guy with humour, forced him into a comical corner where there could be no hard feelings but you had to sort of admit... you was wrong tho

Also bee does usually suck, but when they put her on a woman's right issues, she usually shines.

Jessica Williams is just fine. Olivia Munn was the worst correspondent they've ever had on the show.

Yeah, last night Stewart made Napolitano a complete bitch. It was the worst owning I've seen on the show in a long time.

To judge the contestants, Stewart brought on three university professors, from CUNY, UMASS Amherst, and Columbia. How'd it go?

The first question: "Why did Abraham Lincoln start the Civil War?"

Napolitano's answer: "Because he wanted to preserve the union, because he needed the tariffs from the southern states."

Lincoln's answer: "Well they shot first, and you don't mess with Lincoln. All the vampires know what I'm talking about."

Judges: "They shot first, and you don't mess with Lincoln."

Isn't it more of a mutual fall into war? Considering that Lincoln kept military bases in a territory where 9 out of 13 million people thought they were no longer governed by those bases.

I have a story about that I should tell GAF soon.

But feel free to edit the curbstomp out. What would you prefer to use?

I don't really feel there is a shortage of synonyms for "bests someone in something."

Just off the top of my head, of course. All of these convey the same vague, "wow he totally owned him" message. If you wish to be more specific to the situation, phrases like "outwits" are appropriate.

Well given the fact that it's unconstitutional to sucede from the Union, Lincoln didn't have to recognize the secession movement and could lawfully keep his bases.

That was such an awesome segment, is there an extended version or did we see it all?

Also Jessica Williams is fantastic, she started a bit rocky but now I love her. Never thought to google pics of her tho, hotdamn at that pic above.

Also I'm not sure if the Munn haters actually saw any episodes with her in it? She was fantastic right from her first episode, I don't think people could get past their preconceptions of her and I wasn't surprised when she didn't stick around but seriously, her tiger mum episode was really good.

Her stuff kinda sounded like it was read from a script (which, they all ARE, but the trick is delivering it like it isn't).

I think she was simply intimidated. I found her much better on AOTS.

I'll be honest, I don't hear this term used often. And the word itself is pretty self explanatory. But I had to actually look up why it's offensive (more specifically the history of the word). I appreciate you bringing this up. Learned something new.

What are you referring to here? The Confederacy's total population was around 9 million, and 3.5 million of them were slaves. Almost certainly a majority of people in Confederate territory would not have chosen to secede.

i liked the segment with the new guy (the one where he is nervous to be on the daily show right?) :(

Technically that is "reduced by 1/10th." Not quite the same connotation as the others.

Replace curbstomp with ether.

Great segment. Definitely need to look up the federal marshals point; I also thought Lincoln had them round up runaway slaves.

Can't trust anyone who doesn't believe the Civil War was a just war. If ending slavery wasn't a just cause worth blood and treasure, I don't know what is.

Well technically the slaves only counted as 3/5ths of a person, so that's more like 2.1 million slaves /s

That guy needs to prioritize his morals. He basically said that a war over taxes was necessary and justified but a war over humans forced to be slaves? .. . well we should have just waited that one out, no urgency there.

Hasn't he already demonstrated his priorities? Protecting the interests of wealthy (and mostly white) people.

Hell, those so called taxes ended up being lower then they were before. The problem was that no body was paying the taxes before. To the Americans it seemed like a tax hike because before they got away with not paying those taxes. With those new taxes the British actually enforced them.

Lincoln's first inaugural address is interesting reading. He was anti-slavery, but he was even more pro-Union, and explicitly in favor of returning fugitive slaves to slave states and explicitly against abolishing slavery in slave states (via federal action).

What makes Napolitano's position so weird is that Lincoln basically tried all the things that Napolitano says he ought to have done. Lincoln's Plan A was compensated emancipation. His fallback was to just let slavery slowly die out while preventing it from expanding into new territories. The problem, from his perspective, is that the South either didn't trust him or thought that any end to slavery was unacceptable and that they had to strike while they were still strong.

She strikes me as the weakest correspondent. I just don't find her funny. :/

I agree and that segment was not funny. I had to mute the TV during that portion. When Stewart dismantled Napolitano in the interview portion, that was good stuff. The second part was cringe-worthy.

That is true, the word has romantic etymological origins. But All of these have slightly different technical definitions; if we want to be technical, then obviously the OP doesn't technically mean that Andrew Napolitano was forced to bite a roadside curb and then had his head smashed in by Jon Stewart.

All of these are colloquial definitions, and colloquially, all of these vaguely mean "totally owned." If you want to be more precise, as suggested, then decimate wouldn't be appropriate, I agree. But neither would "curbstomp."

It is interesting how a bunch of the older correspondents went on to be successful. I can't really imagine any of the current correspondents doing that. The closest is Rob Riggle who just gets bit parts in other comedies like 21 Jump Street.
Heh, it's funny that's what I feel about the SNL crew as well (but on a longer time-scale). The classics like Bill Murray, Steve Martin, Eddie Murphy, etc. are now legends. I mean, they're some of the hugest stars, and many of them are great actors as well. After them, no one has reached that kind of popularity, or skill.

Maybe tresquinquated would be most appropriate here? Or would that be better as sexagintamated?

reduced by 3/5 or 60%

It's funny. I was at a bar not too long ago and happened to be wearing a t-shirt with Lincoln on it. So the meat head bartender who we had been waiting to get a drink from for like 20 minutes finally comes over and basically decides he's going to educate me with a lot of these same Lincoln talking points (Lincoln was racist/Only freed the salves so he could tax them and get more money) I assume because I'm not white. I was so confused that all I could really say was "Alright." while giving my GF a look of confusion. He then proceeded to take our drink orders and then completely forget to ever actually get them. I might go back and wear the same shirt just to fuck with him.

Samantha Bee is the best correspondent. Just sayin'. Also, give the new people a break. Most of them were awful at the beginning.

Just to summarize for everyone:

Good reason to start wars: taxes
Bad reason to start wars: slavery

Napolitano should be barred from even pretending to be any kind of historian. Dumbest fucking arguments.

Nothing will ever top Jason Jones being threatened with execution by mother-fucking Mikhail "I didn't know he was still alive" Gorbachev.
