Joss Whedon did not like the way The Empire Strikes Back ended.

Yeah Ok bud. Personally I think the ending was amazing.

Throwing Geek Shade : When it comes to franchises, "Avengers" director Joss Whedon has some strong opinions - especially about "Star Wars" and "The Twilight Saga." Joss is in the midst of his own franchise, with production beginning on "The Avengers: Age of Ultron." EW asked the director to look back at some other huge big screen series and dish on what didn't work. He had some headline-worthy thoughts on "Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back." "'Empire' committed the cardinal sin of not actually ending," he told the mag. "Which at the time I was appalled by and I still think it was a terrible idea... it's not an ending! It's a Come Back Next Week, or in three years. And that upsets me. I go to movies expecting to have a whole experience. If I want a movie that doesn't end I'll go to a French movie. That's a betrayal of trust to me. A movie has to be complete within itself, it can't just build off the first one or play variations."

It pissed me off when I was 12. But then it BLEW MY MIND.

Better subject header: Joss Wheden thinks French films are a betrayal of trust.

Was anyone going to a movie with the phrase Episode V attached to it expecting a nice, clean ending?

Nope. Although I get what he's saying, it's not always horrible. Halo 2 and Matrix Revolutions are horrible endings. Empire owns.

Someone's thoughts on a movie are headline-worthy? Maybe if it was the person who made the movie, but other than that...

Right...sure. Comeback when you make something even as close to as bold as Empire. If you couldn't tell I'm not a huge Joss Whedon fan. I don't dislike the guy or his TV shows or movies I just think he is highly overrated. I wasn't a fan of Firefly and totally understood why it was cancelled. As far The Avengers, it was a good summer movie and was quite a feat tying all those films together but it's not something I'd watch over and over.

Well, it is cheating the audience. The conflict is not resolved and the movie is incomplete. If you want the ending you have to pony up another 2 bucks or whatever movies cost back then. I'm glad this isn't the norm but for some reason I give Star Wars prequels a pass.

Its a little strange, Angel's series finale, while nearly perfect, is very much an open "non" ending.

Edit: And I don't have anything against cliffhangers either. Done right, they can leave you salivating.

When you map something out as a trilogy, and you do a great job of making the first act work as a standalone piece that could live without sequels, I think you've earned the right to say "come back in three years!" in your second act.

Empire Strikes Back > All of Joss Whedon's work.

Seriously, it's not even a close call.

I don't think anyone's going to argue with you there. He's still allowed to have an opinion, though!

Remember when they fight Thanos at the end of Avengers? Okay, unfair comparison, but that movie also didn't tie in all the plotlines but instead told the viewers that the really bad guy was just sitting around somewhere. Not to mention the movie is hardly complete within itself.

The movie was about assembling a team and defeating Loki. The Avengers were assembled, and Loki was defeated. Thanos was never an important part of the story.

I'd rank Halo 2's ending as the worst, even worse than CoD4's.

COD4's ending was awesome and so much better than everything that followed.

i dig Firefly and The Avengers is the only "real" superhero movie I enjoyed, but this comment is outrageous, especially that cheap "american bashing the french" comment. WTF Joss?

Not remotely applicable, they didn't know they were going to be canceled until it was too late.

Also that was Tim Minear's show to run, not Whedon.

Whedon co-wrote the finale. I assume they knew it would be the series finale by the time the episode was filmed at the very least, if not when they were writing it.

Actually, ESB is probably the one movie in the first trilogy that really was like the serials that Lucas was trying to follow.

As I'm sure most people here know, most of those would run in 8-12 parts and each part would end in a cliff hanger that would be resolved next week.

That isn't applicable because its the very theme of the show. Whether Angel wins or loses isn't the point. He fights because there will never be a point where the scales tip in his favor. His penance is to fight until he can't any longer.
Ehhh. But Angel isn't the only character I'm invested on in the show. Their futures were at stake here too. I mean, whatever, I like the show but for the dude a five year television series like that and then complain about a non-ending here is pretty rich.

lol we posted the same reaction at the same time!

yeah man, what the hell. now the avengers, that's a proper ending - all your favourite superheroes come together to defeat the bad guy and boy do they fuck-him-up. my hands were calloused from all the clapping after that moment went down. leaves you with a smile y'know? a proper american ending to a proper american story.

all that defeatism - kershner always did have a shade of pink to him.

Sorta like old Doctor Who?

You think it's outrageous that someone would find ESB's ending unsatisfying?

Whedon committing the cardinal sin of lobbing stones from a glass house.
Yeah! How dare this man have an opinion that differs from yours? THAT ASSHOLE.

Someone post the Harrison Ford who gives a shit gif.
That would imply people don't care which judging by all the fanboyish comments, a lot of people care.

It's one mans opinion who just happens to be famous. I find it amazing that people get so upset over an opinion like your opinion or anyone's opinion on the film is "fact". Don't get it twisted, i am not a "Whedon apologist". There are plenty of things i dislike about his work and i absolutely love ESB but it's just a movie and a opinion. People should not give a shit but given how "passionate" Star Wars and Whedon fans are, this will be argued all over the internet for a week. But GAF? I give it 1, maybe 2 pages since GAF loves to hate on Whedon.

That idea doesn't really fit with the season one finale. We are told there will be an end of days scenario, Angel will play a part, and his reward will be his humanity.
