Joss Whedon did not like the way The Empire Strikes Back ended.

Well without Thanos Loki wouldn't have that weird staff nor his conveniently easily destructable army of aliens. We also see the Other multiple times. Not the same as open plotlines, but definitely not complete within itself.
The scene with the Thanos reveal could have been removed from the movie and absolutely nothing would be lost. That tells you all you need to know about the character's relevance to the story. All you need to know about Loki's backers is what you're told during the story. That they're powerful, and no one knows much about them.

The whole movie built up to Luke's showdown with Vader, which he had.
There was then the added bonus of an escape scene and an epilogue.
I don't know what he thought he saw.

Does he think that Rocky didn't have an ending because Rocky lost?

The Other? You remove him and suddenly the guy has a staff and he has an alien army out of nowhere. At the end of the movie - even if we remove Thanos - the real bad guy (represented by the Other) is still around. When I say Thanos I meant "Thanos and the Other", not only that post-credit scene that can obviously be left away without much problem.

Could you remove the Other? Sure, but then you gotta come up with another story how Loki got this (incredibly easy to kill) alien army and that alien staff.

I wasn't saying that you could remove the Other. I said you could remove the Thanos reveal, and nothing would be lost. I didn't realize you meant both when you referred to Thanos.

So I take it he absolutely despises the BTTF trilogy?

All those movies had a resolution. Marty got back to 1985 and made his parents fall in love, Marty got the book back and set things right again and Marty rescued Doc and destroyed the time machine.

ESB has no resolution. The bad guys get their asses handed to them. The Empire is still in control and no major victories have been won.

I understand where he's coming from....but I really love the idea of the the bad guys getting a flawless victory. Luke gets owned. Han is captured. The Falcon gets away but the protagonists are left wondering just what the fuck happened. Wonderful.

The FINAL one had a resolution....

Shit, even TPM is better.

As for Whedon's comment, I see where he is coming from.

Whoo, Star Wars fans v Wheedon fans, not your conventional matchup but a compelling one nonetheless.

I guess I can see where he's coming from, but I don't really agree. In the context of being part of a trilogy on top of being inspired by sci-fi serials, ESB's ending works fine. The bad guys win and you're left wondering what comes next, which sets up RotJ.

Whedon loves strong endings; which is good for him as networks usually end his shows pretty strongly.
Damn. lol

Kids say the cutest things.

Buffy was a shit tv show, Empire is one of the best movies EVER made. He was right, it's no contest.
Buffy was a more compelling hero than Luke.

Willow was a better sidekick than the droids.

The Mayor was a more entertaining villain than the Emperor.

Angelus was a more menacing villain than Vader.

Oh crud.

I didn't mean COD4.

I meant MW2

MW2's ending is even better than COD4. Is your only issue that Makarov's is still alive, even though the "big bad" is killed? Or is it because of the throwaway line, "da, I know a place," and we don't see what that place is?

Seriously, MW2 was great.

It did have an ending. Luke fucked up, his friend gets captured and the galaxy is in terror again by the Empire. But theres still hope because Luke is reunited with Leia and the others and can regroup. Wtf are you smoking Whedon.

Angel's series finale

Sorry. I loved how it ended. I hated it when it happened, sure....but I love it now. It's how that series should end. Angel's internal battle is ongoing, and neverending. It's fitting that the last scene of our heroes should be them running head on into the biggest battle of their lives, just like they always have, and always will. Angel was a story of eternal struggle, and it shouldn't have ended with a conclusion.....so the way it ended, while people hated it, was perfect.

He honestly did the best he could with his sudden cancellation.

I always felt that it cut to the credits a bit too quickly, I wanted to stare out into space a little longer wondering what was to come.

Absolutely nothing in Star Wars comes close to something like the Buffy episode "The Body", or "Restless". Buffy and Angel are just leagues better.

Yeah, I absolutely agree. Honestly, I've always felt Star Wars was overrated anyway. Almost all of Whedon's work is significantly more interesting and compelling than anything Star Wars has to offer.

I think he meant season 7 of Buffy is a shit show. They had some weak story arcs in the show but Season 7 didn't even follow its own internal logic.

Season 7 is bad by Buffy standards, but I'll take it over 75% of other TV. I like it more than season 4.
