Joss Whedon did not like the way The Empire Strikes Back ended.

If by ending you mean the film stopped at some point then you are correct.
"Luke and the rebellion is going to fuck up hard" is built up throughout the movie. It ending with them fucking up spectacularly against Vader and the Empire but living to see another day is an ending whether you like it or not. It doesn't come out of nowhere and it's not just build up for Return of the Jedi.

I would like to ask, I saw Angel seasons 2-5 and loved it.
Never seen Buffy though. What seasons are the best and are must watch?

You'll get 20,000 different answers to that question, best to just watch from the beginning and enjoy the ride.

FYI though, 4 was the worst. It had some great episodes, but it was the worst.

2 3 and 5 are the best I think. 1 is rough because nobody knew what they were doing. And 6 and 7 was when Joss let Marti Noxon run amok.

But watch all of them because continuity is referenced a lot in the show.

Six was awesome, don't let anyone tell you different.

Trio 4 the win.

Dunno if anyone has said this but this guy shouldnt talk after the way Firefly ended. Felt like there was supposed to be more...

Faith is a more interesting fallen hero than Anakin.

Giles is a better teacher/guide than Yoda/Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan.

Andrew is funnier comic relief than any attempt at comic relief in Star Wars.

Buffy Season 7 is leagues better than the Prequel trilogy.

Eh...haven't watched Episode V in a while but I don't remember the ending being bad. For me, not having an ending is something like A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons. All three books before that felt like they completed what they started, while Dance and Feast went round and round and then ended.

Yea those books just stop, they don't even have proper stopping points or endings, you turn the page and find out it's over... wtf

Joss let Buffy become a victim and thats like the antithesis of Buffy Summers. Plus the whole after school special approach to drugs...I mean magic.

What Buffy season didn't have cringe worthy things? I'm a wrestling fan, I'll take a grain of good in a field of bad.

Edit: also, after six seasons, you have to at least explore how to break your characters or you're not doing it right

He has no point here. There are a lot of movies that end on a cliffhanger. Few have the impact of an ESB or BTTF 2. Some stories are crafted well enough that the typical, inclusive book end isn't possible or fitting.

Buffy was a more compelling hero than Luke.

Willow was a better sidekick than the droids.

The Mayor was a more entertaining villain than the Emperor.

Angelus was a more menacing villain than Vader.
Whatever sliver of hope this thread had is gone.

Jesus christ this thread is ridiculous.

He was asked point blank about that he didn't think quite worked and gave an answer. He didn't take out an ad in Variety telling Lucas to go fuck himself of his own accord.

Also, I LOVE the teenagers who probably saw the Star Wars movies for the first time over a 7 hour span as a box set getting pissy about these comments.

Your assumptions are ridiculous.

That damn Whedon and his answering!

Buffy fans were like one of the first 'my show's the best thing ever' fans on the internet, so I'm not surprised by some of these replies.

...this is when you tell me why you find it outrageous.

i know, but i'm not going to make it easy for nitpicking folks, so next time just ask straight away.

the empire strikes back is the 2nd part of a trilogy. it's the set up for the great finale and hence has to bring that "come back later" feeling to the audience, that's what the middle parts are made for and Episode V does it a lot better than many other of it's "siblings" (relatively recent examples: Matrix and Pirates of the Caribbean 2, both of which simply feel like the first part of the cut-in-half sequel to the successful first movie). it's a standalone movie and it has an actual ending. the rebellion is on the run, solo entered "stage 2" of a story arc that started in episode 4, skywalker is reunited with the alliance/his friends after being separated in the beginning of the movie. it has a climax (attempted rescue of the guys stuck in cloud city, culminating the pursuit of frozen Han and Luke vs. Vader) and it doesn't end abruptly.
now that is my opinion and i gave reasons for it that actually have something to do with the movie instead of taking the go-to foreign culture (not only) americans like to make fun of in pop-culture, without any further reference that'd make this "argument"somehow believable. speaking in a similar manner about another gender or race would raise a shitstorm, but hey - it's only the french, so it's funny and the generalisation has to be right, making it a valid argument.
he's better than that and that's the "outrageous", or "really fucked up" part.

2, 3 and 5 are the best seasons of Buffy, but the whole show is one big story, and it all flows together. The only season that's a real disappointment is 4 (and it's still quite watchable).

Season one is very different than the others--not bad exactly, but much lower budget and less cohesive, almost like a proof of concept.

Season 6 is pretty interesting but gets bogged down in too much grim melodrama. Season 7 is actually pretty great. I had problems with it on my first watch, but it gets better every time I watch it, and now I feel like it's almost as good as two.

More like "stupid Buffy fans" are like that. Some of us can enjoy and recognize its quality without propping it up like god's gift to those starved of quality. (See: commenters on whedonesque)

Empire's ending made me want to see Return of the Jedi more than anything.

Then I watched RotJ and was completely underwhelmed.

Yeah, there was that.

I loved Empire's ending because it was so unexpected. My 14 year old self felt the film coming to an end and was all 'Wait wait WAIT' but then grew to love it. These films were inspired by the old Thirties serials where you had the cliffhanger and came back to the theatre the next Saturday for the (usually) ridiculous resolution. A three year wait was a bit much, but we still had the Marvel comics every month to continue the story (more or less.)

Angel's series finale

Seriously.

Joss Whedon knows the difference between an Open End and a Closed End.

So I honestly just think he's getting all fanboy on SW7.

And then some name their newborns Joss.

Which isn't even his actual name.

His name is Joe.

Isn't he a huge SW fanboy?

I haven't seen that much Buffy but from what I watched there's references to SW a lot.

But it's totally an ending. It ends by opening up a whole new can of worms for the characters to deal with, but it is an ending. Several arcs reach a conclusion, and plenty of others leave off at an interesting new place.

1. Lando feels remorse for his betrayal.
2. Leia expresses her love for Han.
3. Han once again risks his neck to help his friends.
4. Luke arrogantly faces Vader and pays the price.
5. The most important one: the Empire's trap works.

Now, being the middle movie, these aren't all finite ends to arcs, but they are ends. Things at the end of Empire are drastically different from at the beginning. The main arc that ends is the Empire striking back. They set a trap and it goes off with nary a hitch, and we see the immediate fallout from it.

.... I'm a huge Buffy and Angel fan.

But come on, dude.

Come on.

You're saying that a metaphor for male sex addiction (and possibly the fear of becoming a rapist unknowingly) that somehow got a spin-off is meatier than Darth Vader.

I don't understand the rage over this, myself.

I get what he's saying, though I completely disagree with it.

I think the guy is wrong, but opinions etc. But there are people making some very bold claims about Whedons talent, that I really don't see being able to be backed up.
