i just saw ju-on (i bought the dvd). i saw the grudge a couple weeks ago. how can anyone like ju-on better? here is what i DIDN'T like about ju-on:
- Effects/Makeup are lame. OOOH THE GHOST HAS A BLUE FACE! HOLY SHIT IM FREAKED OUT! what a joke. it just looked like an asian chick with blue face paint you buy at any common football game. wtf is so scary about that? the asian chick in the grudge scared the shit out of me. also, that little boys makeup in the grudge was better. i'm not a special effects whore, but i think the art direction in the grudge was highly superior.
- the "rules" of the haunted house were more appealing in the grudge. in ju-on, you can be killed REGARDLESS of if you've been in the house or not (as evidenced by the security guard who is killed by the bathroom). in the grudge, it feels more sinister. more of that twilight zone feeling where YOU are the only one suffering from the terrible dilemma.
- i think more of the story was explained in ju-on (which was good), but it also had some retarded sequences. the one with that chick and her 3 highschool friends was dumb. wtf did they all turn into zombies? ooh, blue faced zombies! lame.
- i felt some "sequences" of the movie were out of place and just left me saying "uh, ok...". i think the grudge had more cohesion and made more sense to me.
- i liked the ending in the grudge better. i felt a lot of tension at the end when that chick is crawling down the stairs, and she is RIGHT UP in SMG's boyfriends face. then goes after her. really gave me goosebumps. but then in ju-on it was kind of lame. this is further extension of lack of effects and makeup, but still...
overall i still thought ju-on was a good movie on its own. and if i hadn't seen the grudge first i probably wouldn't have complained on some of these fronts, but as it is it's clear to me that the grudge is a lot better.
on a somewhat related subject, how is the movie The Eye and is there an american DVD (not a remake in english, but sort of how Ju-on was released here with subtitles)?
