Just got a DS and...

(you guessed it, this is a DS bash thread)

OMGWTFBBQ? There's no way to rearrange buttons for GBA games? Ever since SNES the left and bottom buttons have been "B" and "A", that is, "shoot" and "jump". Now I have to readapt from 15+ years of playing just because Nintendo are ******** lazy?

Please tell me there's some hidden mode to change this, because otherwise playing GBA games on this (~95% of my intended usage until I get Nintendogs and CVDS) will be a nightmare.

Oh, and isn't there a way to stretch the screen to full-screen?

Just got a DS
I'm sorry

There is also no rearranging of buttons or stretching of screen.
The only thing you can switch is what the GBA games are displayed on, top or bottom.

What SNES controller were you using? The DS and SNES have the exact same button layout for face buttons.

The left hand button is Y and the bottom button is B, the right hand button has always been A.

And if you'll look at a GBA, you'll notice that it is again the same, only without X and Y buttons.

Hey, while we on the subject of the DS, I have a launch DS and was thinking of trading it in w/ Untold Legends (PSP) for the electric blue DS, paying any difference there might be. Do you guys think its worth it and what place would be to do such a thing? I think the blue looks real sweet, but I might just settle for a skin.

Also, can't wait for all these great DS titles I've been reading about to come out. So far I've only got Mario 64 DS and Yoshi's Touch and Go, but I'm having a blast playing all the GBA games I missed out looking better than ever (I do feel bad that I play them off a flash cart, though the ones I really like I purchase.). Anyone know if Sonic Rush, the new Mario, and Viewtiful Joe DS have a tentative date? Well, thanks in advance to anyone that can help.

True, but you can't use the 'Y' button to run in Super Mario Advance, like you could on the SNES.

This is a week troll. You have some made-up button configuration in your head and want to stretch an image 12 more pixels vertically?

Mario probably not until next year.

Noooooooooooooo!

By the way, I love the DS. But playing Wario Ware Twisted on it is a pain, it's like trying to rotate a brick with an open checkbook attached to it.

Viewtiful joe DS = October
Sonic Rush = November
New Super Mario Bros = 2006

You obviously dont know how much of a difference that makes.

It's okay. You're probably. used to small fucking resolutions.

Made up? Apparently someone has never played Super NES, PlayStation, PS2, or Xbox games.

Stretching an image that little will only result in distorting it.

Scroll up the page or look at your SNES pad. It's the same as it always has been. I don't know what he is bitching about.

Super NES
Y: primary action
B: jump

Game Boy Advance games on DS
B: primary action
A: jump

Exactly. All these consoles (which incidentally is what I've been playing this last decade or so) have had "action" on the left button and "jump" on the bottom button. I realize that the Gamecube controller has a similar setup for two-button games, but hey, I never said that it didn't suck either.

Oh well, sucks to be me and not reading up properly on this. At least mine is pre-owned and I traded in some junk towards it, so I ended up paying about 1/3 of what it really would cost.

And I'm ASSUMING that Castlevania will have a "traditional" button setup or at least customizable.

You do understand you are talking about GBA games MADE for the GBA which only featured an A and B button? I'm sorry Nintendo didn't recall ALL of their GBA games and remaster them to stop one fool from posting a thread.

There wasn't anything stopping Nintendo from making the DS's face button layout with the A and B buttons in the positions of the Super NES's respective B and Y buttons either.

I'm so glad you can't make threads yet. I mourn for the day you can.

Nintendo's not about to tear apart their 20 year button layout history and swap buttons around. Lol. The only solution would be a software one, and I'm not even sure if that would be possible. After all, if you boot up a GBA game, it is essentially the GBA hardware in the DS that's running the game, right? It's not emulation, after all, is it?

The reason the buttons are as they are is because the DS includes the GBA chipset. To allow button-swapping would have required using a GBA emulator instead.

And then you'd complain it wasn't accurate enough :P

Edit: Which isn't to say I like the buttons at all. Cramp city here :(

The A and B buttons on the DS strains my thumb like hell after only 20 minutes or so. Never had any problems with any controller before in my life. I ordered a classic GBA for GBA games. There goes the joy of having it all on one system.

They could just make the the 'X' button double as another 'B' button when playing GBA games. I'm no DS hater, in fact I'm probably the furthest thing from it. This is a legitamite problem. Try playing Super Mario Advance, and telling me its not awkward.

I have a DS and I can't remember what the old systems were like either!

*shakes fist at nintendo for making things standard instead of catering to my memory*

Try playing Super Mario Advance, and telling me its not awkward.

It's not akward

There's no technical reason why they couldn't have had the buttons configurable. Let the Y pretend it's B and present itself as such to the GBA game. Or let the Y and X buttons double as extra L and R buttons for those games that need it. You're talking as if the DS was built around a GBA with extra stuff added on top of the existing circuit board.

we can switch between dual-analog and mouse/keyboard in the blink of an eye --- but we can't move our finger slightly to the right from what we're used to on the SP :lol

my grandma still has a hard time wiht a mouse...
gamers are such bitches - go play some SuperMetroid on default controls, that'll get you up and runnin'

Well, not really that far from it... I'm not that up on the system internals, but when the system switches over to GBA mode, I don't think the ARM9 and "DS circuitry" do anything to input data. AFAIK, the only thing configurable about GBA mode is the screen location.

Super Metroid had configurable controls, but apparently Nintendo weren't such bitches back then. It DOES make a big difference. I played Castlevania a bit and kept missing because when I don't use the button for a few seconds and then decide to press it, the mind automatically goes for the left button. I shouldn't have to think "okay, now I want to attack, then I should press the DOWN button in this game"... games are totally intuitive after the first learning period. It should be hand-to-eye coordination, now it has to be hand-to-mind-to-eye coordination. Of course, eventually I could learn to change... and then be fucked in every other game. Thanks.

And if that is correct about the system build, then it's very short-sighted of them.
