Dick Tracy was extremely popular in the 1930ies and 1940ies when newspaper comic strips were immensely popular. There were Dick Tracy radio shows, movie serials, regular movies, But even though Chester Gould kept making Dick Tracy comic strips until his death in 1977 I don't think Dick Tracy still was a household name. The idea of a Dick Tracy movie in 1990 was already weird because the comic was past its prime.
On the other hand, I like the idea of keeping these characters relevant for the modern age. I wouldn't mind new media featuring pulp characters like The Shadow, Doc Savage and John Carter. Especially John Carter, those novels about a human transported to a Mars fighting monsters with his superhuman strength and seducing Martian princesses during his offdays are perfect source material for a video game.
The movie was a result of Hollywood wrongly thinking pulp comics were why Batman was a success. As a result we got Dick Tracy, The Shadow, The Phantom, and The Rocketeer.

All of them are actually pretty good but all of them flopped. The Rocketeer is the best of the four, followed by Dick Tracy and then The Shadow.

I dressed up as Dick Tracy in the 5th grade after the movie came out.
The Rocketeer was't even a golden age comic, it was just inspired by that vintage feel. Surprisingly short run as well, I have the whole collected run and its only like 100 pages, basically just the story you see in the film.
Connelly was the only option for the dame thought, she has that Betty Page appeal.
I really dig the 30s and early 40's stuff. It's why I like Indiana Jones so much as well.
Unfortunately we will never see a period piece like that again without a whole lotta "modern audience" injected stuff. Especially the way women are depicted, ain't none of them gonna faint from fright and be content to stay tied up on the railroad tracks waiting for their Dudley Do-right to save them. They'll all have to throw fists with the best of the men, be expert radio operators, pound whisky without a grimace, and have never seen the inside of a kitchen.
The "dashing tough guy" will be superfluous in the story.
I'd like to see another crack at John Carter as well. A video game could work. Hard to do the books justice given the colored tribes of Martian men and the nudist colony dress, but it could be fun.

I watched the show in parts... Only how cartoonish the villains were was disturbing. I have a Dick Tracy Pepsi cup.

I was dick Tracey for Halloween 1 year. It was big for a bit. Madonna being all sexy over Warren betty definitely helped.
For the ladies Warren was probably just at that right age where he wasn't too old yet. Like Redford in sneakers

In my era of the late 80's early 90's when the movie came out, it wasn't popular at all. That was in spite of the marketing machine hitting us from all angles with it. From music to video games, it was there. I rented the games on NES and Genesis and later the home video, which had a ton of copies on the shelves. We could tell it was a flop because Movie Gallery had a wall dedicated to it, which you could grab a copy on into the first day of release…..and the second….Madonna made out like a bandit with Vogue, the best thing to come out of it. The rest was hot garbage.

I remember the cross media ads in the Mickey Mouse magazine when the movie came out. They went all out on it. Saw the movie in theater and was like "eh. This is it?" Was probably too young to understand it. But I remember that Beatty banged Madonna and she was hot back then. Best Dick she ever had.

I remember some studio was trying to make a Doc Savage movie starring Dwayne Johnson.
Besides the 70s movie, Buckaroo Banzai was heavily inspired on the character.

So, it seems like the movie was really front loaded with as much merchandising as possible. Batman 1989 really did set the time for a comic book movie revival at that point in time. But not many movies could hit that same level of success. Bit in the end, Dick Tracy felt like more of a blip on the radar, in comparison to the wider success of that Burton movie. I suppose the comics always had their fans.
