Just how powerful will PS3 be?

Azelover

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
Hi everybody, I've just recently signed up my account but I've been checking GAF on a regular basis for at least a year. And even though I find some of your hardware "discussions" interesting I'm not quite the computer geek. The last thing I can remember I knew about console hardware is that the biggest number of bits were the better(I actually know more than that, but you get the point). You guys talk about floating points or something I end up floating not knowing what the hell you're talking about.

So how many times is PS3 more powerful than PS2? 50? Even though NVidia was just reffering to the GPU?

And Xbox 2 is 20 times as powerful as Xbox 1 right? And Xbox 1 is 3 times as powerful as PS2? So I can assume Xbox 2'll be 60 times the PS2 right?

Could somebody, like Panajev or anyone else, give me and the not so well informed on hardware a simpler explanation on how much power we can expect from PS3 compared to PS2?

Oh god,

Honestly, nobody that posts here knows for sure. it's all speculation, and stupid percentages at this point.

Well, we know the PS9 will plug into your brain, otherwise Sony is going to have a hell of a lawsuit on their hands.

So somewhere between a PS2 and shoving a cord into your brain.

well, nobody on the 'outside' of Sony-IBM-Toshiba really knows.

I would simply expect a similar leap from PS1 to PS2. the PS3 will be pretty damn powerful, just *how* powerful is the subject of endless debate & speculation :D

"well, nobody on the 'outside' of Sony-IBM-Toshiba really knows.

I don't expect PS3's video to look the same as PS1 and PS2. Both systems had this low image quality, high polygon look. With Nvidia doing the GPU, I think that'll change. I expect more of an OpenGL look to video, and that's what Nvidia does best (good choice by Sony for making the code similar to OpenGL and getting Nvidia to do video).

It'll be really powerful. While there's all this talk of Cell, it's really going to run on the power of keebler elves.

Honestly it will probably show much more of an improvement over the leap between PS 1 and PS 2. The next gen consoles will really start to show where games can go.

One hundred billion mellliiooonnnn times!!!1!11

Like Dante said, no one here is likely to know.

Even if someone were to know, they'd be legally bound not to say.

Idono, take a look at those unreal 3 engine shots , or imagine Half Life 2 and doom 3 with all special effects maxed out running at 60 FPS without slowdown . That's the minimum of what I'd expect from the next set of systems.

If you want me to throw random useless numbers around though-

The PSone could do 360,000 polygons a second, with texture mapping. At 30 frames per second. This meant in a game running at 30 FPS, which was usually the playstation norm you could desplay an image filled with 12000 polygons. The PS2 is capable of 12-15 million texture mapped polygons a second which means you can create an image built out of 200,000 polys every frame for 60 FPS , in other words way way way better. 33 times more triangle pushing. So I think it'd be reasonable to expect atleast that kind of jump for the next playstation hardware... in the ballpark of 400 million textured polys per second , or 6.5 million polygons per frame in a game running at 60 FPS, this is funny becuase the 640X480 resolution image only has around 300 thousand pixels on display so there will actually be 20 times more polygons then there are pixels available.

Other things to note- the PSone had a 33 Mhz processor , the PS2 had roughly a 300 Mhz processor , a 10 X jump . Going by that the PS3 will have atleast a 3 Ghz processor.

The original PSone had only 1 meg of video ram and 2 megs of regular ram , the PS2 has 32 megs of regular memory but only 4 megs of video memory, so it should be expected that there will be 512 megs of regular ram atleast 32 megs of video memory but I'm thinking 64 is more probable.

what happened to that Sony guy (or whatever he was called)? he was able to answer all questions related to the PS3 and Cell. that is until some GAFers decided that he didnt live in japan but somewhere in the states...

The PS3 is powerful enough to destory the world!

It is 50 times more significant then the invention of the printing press!

Who cares how powerful it is? Will it be/how much more powerful than Xbox2? That's what everybody wants to know :lol

Nasa is just going to unplug all their computers and run everything off a PS3. Pixar plans to make their next animated film using only a PS3. It's so powerful, the US Government will put our missle defense shield network on it.

no matter how powerful it is...
it won't have enough RAM.
To tell you the truth - if they really stuffed in a 1TFlop CPU I could easily do a fair bit more with 256MB of memory then what we know of Xenon could with a hypothetical 512MB.

Of course, chances of there being a 1TFlop CPU are about as good as having 1GB of memory ;)

:lol :lol

Why beleive lies xbox1 is no where near 3x as ps2 :)

and no one know the answers to your questions.....does anyone on the GAF's have a xbox 2 or Ps3??? :lol

You know I think we should have a Junior member only thread where all new Junior Members are REQUIRED to have a discussion with each other. That way we can identify and ban the stupid ones.

It'd be like a gladiatorial death pit GAF style.
