Justified - Season 5 - Timothy Olyphant & Walton Goggins - Tuesdays on FX

Pretty good finale to a ho-hum season. I liked all the parts getting moved into their places for the finale season. The smile on Boyd's face after bank-robbing is mentioned was great.

One thing...I really feel like this show doesn't have a happy ending for Raylan.

Yes! Loved that. Setup for the final season is good.

Solid finale. Last few episodes definitely upped the quality of the season. Still probably the second weakest season for me thus far. Crowes didn't really work for me (except for Wendy, because Alicia Witt) and Ava storyline was just the worst. I mean, just terrible. I'm in disbelief that the Justified writers came up with that garbage.

Oh, is this where we do season rankings? I'm going with...

2 > 4 > 3 > 5 > 1.

100% agree. Crowes felt like a waste but Wendy still shined.

In other news I stumbled upon a copy of S2 on bluray at Target for <$8 and picked it up immediately, no regrets :p. It had a clearance sticker on it for some reason.

Daaaaaaamn, that's a great price for one of the best TV seasons ever.

I'm gonna wait for a nice blu ray boxset when it's all set and done. Expensive times ahead with Boardwalk Empire, Mad Men and Justified all having boxsets to be released in 2015 most likely :p

That's what I'm waiting on as well. Don't buy a lot of shows, but this is one I definitely want to have.

Me neither, still a poor student and I'd like a nice film collection too. All I have on blu-ray is three seasons of GoT and Firefly :p

Breaking Bad will be bought in the near future though.

It's all kinds of miracles that Dewey isn't dead by now. You should be thankful that he ended up in prison heh.

He will come out in the S6 finale and pick up the remains of Boyd's empire. New king putting his foot down !

Strong finale that suffered from Darryl not being a very threatening villain. Raylan is going some dark places.

+For Winona - for lack of Dewey.

2=3>4>5>1 for me as far as season ratings go.

Curious question, Do people feel season 1 was just really bad or the other seasons were really good. I constantly see people rank it as the worst season of Justified. I'm not saying i dsagree, I'd just like to here the reasoning for that.

It's the one season I never watched because of how people rank it. lol

I liked it, but the first 5-6 are close to standalone episodes, iirc. They play more like short stories out of Harlan County featuring Raylan, not that I minded. Once Boyd is back in the picture it picks up. FWIW, FX specifically requested that they go episodic for the first few before letting them go to a more serialized story.

It's definitely worth watching. Like Cornballer said, it starts out more as standalone episodes before they get the encompassing plot really going. It's more like a "oh, who's Raylan going to shoot this week" sort of thing lol. That's not to say they aren't decent though. The dentist one especially sticks out. I would just rate the other seasons as better overall. I'll have to watch 5 all in a row to decide whether I like that more or less than 1 though. It had a lot of really strong moments, but hard to say whether that makes up for the various shortcomings for me.

It's the latter. The procedural nature of the show hurt it more than anything, and just hampered the overall quality of the season. That said, the first two episodes and the last few of the season are damn good.

Well I guess that was an ending, but it wasn't a particularly graceful wrap up. Definitely the weakest season by a country mile.

Seems a bit premature to hang the entirety of next season going after Boyd. I'd thought they'd already have enough dirt on him already to keep him under constant observation. Everything Boyds done of late has turned to shit in short order, and beyond Wynn he's pretty much out of friends.

Also agree with Tim Goodman in the HR article that the heel turn by Ava feels rather abrupt and out of place.

On the positives good to see Tim & Rachel taking names. Hopefully next season they'll be more involved.

For real? And they played ball?

I loved season 1. If I had to rank them right now it'd be 2 > 4 > 3 > 1 > 5

The first season episode with W Earl Brown is one of my favorites. Also I never really minded the standalone episodes at all.

Deputy Tim Gutterson: I'm a deputy U.S. Marshal, ordering you to get me some chicken.
Griller: I shut down the broiler—
Gutterson: What's that?
Griller: That's the last order for delivery.
Gutterson: I'll take it.
Griller: Like HELL you will.
Gutterson: I'm officially requisitioning this chicken. If this doesn't pay for it, send an invoice to the courthouse.
Griller: But... what do I tell the customer?
Gutterson: You tell 'em the U.S. Marshal service is grateful for their patriotism.

A very patchy season. Some of the show's best episodes and some of its worst. The Ava storyline was atrocious, but at least the closing minutes of the finale made its purpose clear.

The other seasons are just really, really good.

That said I actually feel the previous season (4?) was the worst in the show's run. Still enjoyable of course.

That's a great one too. Scene with Bo at the diner was great, and I think that was also the first episode with Wynn Duffy if I remember right.

Well, in some cases the alternative is not getting your show made, and it all worked out in the end.

The marching orders I got, at the beginning of this series, from John Landgraf at FX, was that we could do stand-alone episodes in the first half of the first season, and then start really focusing on the serialized aspect. We’ve done fewer and fewer stand-alone episodes, as the series has progressed because, in general, we have the audience that we’re going to have and they’re very loyal and they know the stories.

been an alright season, but i really enjoyed this last episode. definitely one that reminds you why the show is called justified.

I am catching up on this show presently and just recognized that the nurse, Rowena, is the Popeye's chicken lady.

That was definitely the weakest finale and the weakest season yet. I realllllly hope they can right this ship for S6. I'd hate to see Justified go down in flames.

S2 > S4 > S3 > S1 > S5

The even numbered seasons being the best hopefully bodes well for S6.

This season really suffered from the loss of JB. I feel like the Crowe's might've been a little more of a threat with someone like him on board longer. He seemed to be a little more patient than they were, a little bit better at seeing ahead a few moves.

Also, was the Ava story line really there just to set her up to narc on Boyd next season? We had to suffer through a season of her in prison for that? That felt like a half season arc of development for her that was stretched out to a whole season.

Definitely a very complex last couple of minutes of that episode for Raylan. Seeing a feeble Art like that, having Art tell him he's going to Florida, talking to Winona and his baby, then finding out the Marshalls are going after Boyd. So many pensive looks from Raylan without him really giving us a chance to hear what he was thinking. I guess it gives a lot for them to explore for the final season. I have to admit I was pretty surprised that this finale went down without him shooting anyone.

Alison with only a tiny one line shout out in the finale. So many side characters who sucked up screen time that ended up going nowhere. If I could trade the screen time Alison or the Russian lady got for more screen time for Gutterson and Rachel I would do it in a heart beat because they stole every scene they were in this season. I mean heck, I want to know if Gutterson was popping painkillers after that shootout or if there was more to it than that!

I feel like there was more I wanted to say but now I'm drawing a blank. I will say Raylan talking to Kendall was a damn good scene.

That's all I've seen so far (from the Sepinwall interview Cornballer posted), but I wish he was a bit more candid and specific about it.

Ahh, looks like Yost answers some of the questions I have. Will have to read.

Good finale. The final scene with Ava and Raylan on the bridge with "You'll Never Leave Harlan Alive by Ruby Friedman Orchestra" playing in the background was just...god. I couldn't be more excited for the final season!

Ratsky's woman turns out to be the ultimate snitch.

She's snitching on the man who left her to die in prison. Plus, there's always the chance that she helps Boyd out and escapes with him!

I couldn't be more excited for the final season.

Agreed. I really like the set up they have going into season six. Should be a great season.

Oh, is this where we do season rankings?

2 > 1.B > 4 > 1.A > 5 > 3

Three is the only season that legit sucked.

this season was a solid setup for season 6 IMO other shows do much worse when they try to do set up season

4>2>3>5>1.

The first half of season one is an excellent pilot and then a bunch of junk episodes that almost made me quit watching, but it picks up after the half way point.

Really, Watsky? I thought the second half of that season was really bad and went completely off the rails, BUT the first half of the season before Quarles became a little bitch was on some S2 level shit and was only bettered by, well, S2. As such I rank it in the middle.

S5 was bad for 9 episodes. In a 13 episode season, thats far too long to be in the dumps.

S1 was awesome, BTW, even if it was more episodic.

That's too bad easily the second or third best season behind season 2.
I'm one of those 2>4>3 people, so... it'd have to be quite amazing to knock down 4 or 3.

And listening to the Firewall and Iceberg round up of the season and hearing Sepinwall go through all the mostly pointless deaths this season... yeah, no wonder it all felt so flat this year. I didn't even remember that Alan Tudyk/whatever his new name is was in an episode only to be murdered off by Raylan.

Isn't that par for the course? The front end of this season was a bloodbath, but it settled down after a while. I'd be curious to see the tally of deaths per season.

It was Sepinwall going through the cast (not even the characters, but the actors, because they couldn't even remember their character's names) and Feinberg just going "eh" to each one. They also broke down all the problems with the Ava storyline and why the second "out" seemed so disingenuous because it was only meant to set up a plot point about Ava and Boyd that they could have done in any other manner.
It was a bit of a cathartic wrap up anyway, if you had problems with the season.

Yes, they did have guest-star-palooza at the beginning of the season, but again, I thought it calmed down after the first few episodes. I'll give it a listen later if I have time.
