In Korea, a problem has arisen regarding the business of hallyu. Although the country’s reach has has expanded across the globe, profits of the Korean Wave still remain 99% in Asia, and profits even in Korea do not reach high to that extent. Already, there are estimates that the influence of hallyu will end in roughly 5 years, and currently Korea’s “national prestige” is standing at a crossroad.

“3 Times the Olympics”

In March, Korea’s Economic newspaper published a report about how Korea’s hallyu wave effects it’s economy. Factoring in exports like music and dramas, in 2003 profits were 86 million dollars, but jumped to a staggering 220 million dollars in 2008. For K-Pop between 2007 and 2010, it has risen from 189 million dollars to 313 million dollars.

This has had a ripple effect on all of Korea’s industries, crossing over entertainment and culture. In 2012, it’s estimated the car industry brought a result of a 2.7 trillion won increase (about 190 billion yen), and broad industries like games, food, tourism, consumer electronics are seeing an increase in about 12 trillion won. At this rate, it’s estimated that all these industries will rise to 19.8 trillion won in 2015, and 57 trillion won in 2020.

License Barriers

On that note, the problem arises with the high degree of dependence the Korean Wave has on Japan. Although K-Pop has mainlined to the point where concerts are now held in the West, Asia accounts for 99% of K-Pop’s sales, with Japan taking up 80% of it.

According to the Korean Economic Newspaper, when calculating the revenue of the 5-member idol group KARA’s activity in Japan, including character goods and performances, 84% of it is given to the Japanese distributors, a remaining 8% left to Japanese promoters. The final left-over profits for KARA’s entertainment agency is only an 8%, an amount said not be close to enough money.

Oingyu, head of the Hallyu Research Center in Daejeon, Korea points out the main problem hallyu holds is that it is “attaching too much onto Japan” and it’s ongoing “revenue imbalance”. Regarding that circumstance, although Japan is K-Pop’s biggest market in the world, Korean industry cannot directly sell in Japan due to “licensing agreements”.

In Korea, recognition of the revenue imbalance is gaining strength, and although Korea is directly tied up with Japan in the telecommunications industry, and are attempting to find a way around online music selling, the view that it’s “impossible to operate in Japan but ignore Japan’s entertainment distribution network,” as stated by Korean company promoters, has become a popular view.

The final blow to all of this is a poll taken in by economic newspaper. This February, the paper asked 1,200 people made up of Chinese, Japanese, and Taiwanese people questions regarding hallyu. 62% of people believed hallyu would end withing 5 years, and 18% believed hallyu is already ending. Combined, 80% already have negative outlooks on the future of hallyu.

Although Korea wants to break away from Japan’s market as being K-Pop’s singular dependence, if it leaves business will almost cease to exist. It seems even hallyu itself is bringing about a dilemma in Korea.

Kara does all the work and get next to nothing, damn.

And the new member is 14? Why so young? Could she even keep up with the elder members dancing?

Let's see if Lime can stand without green hair and skimpy outfits. If so, she's a winner.

Most Kara money must come from endorsements...
And someone has to grab the (remaining) pedo-bear market share, KKS is smarter than we thought. English speaker is a plus.

KSS probably thinks he's Tsunku or something. A few years from now T-ara will just be a depressed Boram leading a dozen 13 and 14-year-olds.

They are already depressed.
Not easy to get along taking care of a child within a mostly twenty-something girl group...

Having watch it all now...The Youtube concert was really awesome and the venue was amazing. However, i know, its nothing new, but i mean the k-pop fans are embarrassingly passive although its mostly because of the "all seating" venue. Its so awkward every time they film the audience during a really catchy dance song, and they are basically just sitting there, texting, smiling or looking passive. I know, there is not much to do when you sit at an concert, i know exactly how it feels. K-pop fans good at cheering though! So cute, with all the groups speaking english!

EDIT:

I know i can look this up, but still:

Was this concert broadcasted on MBC in Korea or just the internettu?

Have T-ARA ever performed abroad?

Sistar, sure performed a lot abroad. Starship Entertainment done good 4 sure.

EDIT: Is there anyone in WG not speaking english?

On one side it is embarrassing, one the other side its expected because no one really speaks Korean and thus its hard to shout out words to a song you have no idea wtf is going on. That being said its not much to ask to get a clap going or look interested.

Great performances by all. Little to no sound/mic issues which is a godsend (seems to be a constant thing with kpop). Friggen MBLAQ are shit hot talented but barely get an eye in when compared to bigger acts like SHINee, SuJu, BEAST and TVXQ. I feel privileged seeing them in person and they continue to blow me away.

Don't think it has been broadcasted in Korea yet but if its anything like the MBC one in Sydney it will be in a month or so time and the footage will be chopped up to the shit.

Agreed about SISTAR. They seem to be everything and now they are promoting on G+ hopefully to crack the western market (as are BEAST).

Pretty jelly on anyone in the front section, they are realllly close to the stage which seems to be rare at kpop concerts/events

I was there for a Linkin Park and a Weezer concert and the place was bumpin. It might have been that mandatory "stay seated" order at the Kpop one. Probably makes it more conspicuous if anyone tries to sneak past those fat security guards and get at Taengoo again.

Speaking of Lime, she has a decent body. But that face..

She's like Sunkyu 2.0. She can say she's hotter than Spica (combined) I guess. In any case, this is why Soshi needs to stop fucking around and get back to appearances and variety shows so that we're not forced to discuss Lime or Orange or Pineapple or whatever her name will be when she changes hair color again.

Now admittedly I don't know many names of hot asians but I want to leave no stone unturned and so I ask if any of you can provide a simple list of 5-10 names of any actresses, models, singers that are asian. I will incorporate a number of them into the final list.

If I had two brown paper bags, and G.na and Lime were both standing in front of me, I'd put them both on G.na.

Lol, well, to be fair that's not saying much.

In case you missed:
Eurovision peaked with Lordi, nothing relevant appeared afterwards...

Not sure about last year, but Ukraine has history in Eurovision.
Last year there was this blonde girl from Ukraine or something who was just goddam. Her song was pretty good as well ahah

Speaking of Lime, she has a decent body.

This is going to be interesting.. I think they'll be very popular indeed

Yang Hyun Suk commented, “During ‘K-Pop Star’ the group SuPearls moved the stage and the audience so we are planning on creating a new ‘SuPearls’“. SuPearls, originally consisting of Lee Jungmi, Lee Michelle, Lee Seung Joo, and the winner Park Jimin, is the sub-group that was created in ‘K-Pop Star’ as one of the challenges that stunned the judges and the audience with their perfect harmonization and confidence.

But in the new SuPearls, YG is replacing Park Jimin with Lee Ha Yi, who finished in second on the show. Yang Hyun Suk also revealed his hopes for recreating a group similar to Big Mama. He also said, “The new SuPearls members already proved their skills through K-Pop Star and there are many fans who are anticipating for their return. We are going to start on their debut stage immediately and release them as soon as possible.”

Lost all credibility.
Hah, Jiyeon made such awesome faces in this MV.

Been a while since I felt really passionate about a new group but damn I'm in love with Spica. All the members are so cool, I can't even peg one as my favorite cause I like them all for different reasons (really though it's probably Juhyun). Kim BoA is such a great performer and you can tell she's having a shit ton of fun whenever she's singing, Juhyun has a super sexy rapper voice and the one I relate to most for some reason, and I just find Jiwon cute as hell. Also Narae and Bohyung are both really talented singers.

For Painkiller promotions, Juhyun caught me by surprise (in a very very good way.) Her lines are my favorite (didn't expect her to be singing, thought she was only there to rap) and she looks totally different compared to how she looked during Russian Roulette. Painkiller is such a damn good song though.. one of the best this year so far.

supposedly's t-ara's new single along with gang kiz's next song

both songs are hot.

(first song is confirmed gang kiz, mostly everyone thinks 2nd song is t-ara)

i recommend just listening to the audio after you hit play, so good. fire

The gang kiz one is much better than their current single and T-ara one seems very good (Britney Spears Criminal meets Shaw Brothers soundtrack)

I really like Jonte's choreography too, it make me want to copy it while the song plays.

A Pink on Weekly Idol (no subs, but it has funny bits)
