Anything would have been a good fucking rebuttal after the first dude actually said "Poof Daddy." Wtf? REALLY?!

he was the first dude.. and the Poof Daddy part was the only thing that made sense

Feel free to point out where you believe I am in error.

since when do blacks sing high and long notes any more than any other races? and when did this become a racial trait of black music?

Kayne West is right. White America is always stealing ideas from other cultures and passing it off as their own.

your avatar rocks btw.. sure sure sure.. but that is not the artist faults... not like Kenny G was in his basement in Seattle and thinking...once I get rich off if easy listening Jazz I will laugh in the face of the black Jazz players!!!

No. Different kinds of music is awesome. Kanye is saying people like Kid Rock and Fred Durst need to stop acting like they're from the hood. All of these guys are something they aren't.

dude Kid ROck was down with some of the hottest groups in hip hop before he was signed. he was hanging with D-Nice, BDP, etc etc rhyming at parties with them, sometimes taking the stage with them, and what not. His hip hop cred goes back way further than Kanye West. Whether you like his style or not, that's different.

As far as acting like you're from the hood. That's not entirely true. Everyone from the projects doesn't act 'hip hop'. Hip Hop style dress and culture isn't innately black. Black people mimic other black people, the same way some of these white kids do. The Black kid sags his pants, buys gold fronts, rocks timberland boots for the same reason the white kid does, because he saw it on tv and thinks it cool. It's not like we're born with addidas and kangols. Hip Hop isn't BLACK culture. It's culture, plain and simple. If you know anything at all about the roots of hip hop you'd know that it wasn't an exclusively black thing. Sure it was born in the projects, but black kids were doing it, Puerto Rican kids were doing it, and a small minority of white kids were doing it. The music sampled rock, R&B, Soul, everything! Shit man, I remember 3rd Bass, they were white and one of them had a flattop and the other acted like Big Daddy Kane. Who gave a shit back then? Should white people not play Jazz and use slang or wear clothing that they feel is appropriate for a Jazz Musician?

Read what I was replying to in that post. Shinobi said that Christina "sounds black" when she hits those high notes. My response simply mocked that view.

well yeah that's retarded.. :D (the post you were replying to that is)

Someone needs a trip to the International magazine section at the public library. :lol

Obtain a copy of Hotdog, IIRC, (Japanese language fashion magazine) and have a laugh. :P

I'm not sure what you are getting at, but what I mean is that white America is profiting off of other peoples cultures and at the same time, undermining the people of the culture they're ripping off. Go watch The Fast and The Furious and The Last Samurai.

What I'm getting at is that while you sit there crying about white people, yellow people are up to the same antics. Oh yeah, sagging the pants and wearing jerseys and whatnot. You haven't lived until you've seen J-Rap, which I'm sure would make even the most rabid GAF Japanophile cringe. :P

Go watch The Fast and The Furious and The Last Samurai.

I made the mistake of seeing TF&TF, and I don't know who that was ripping off; but god did it suck.

Fortunately I don't need to see Scientology Kenshin to know that it blows goat. ;)

But hey, if Scientology Kenshin pisses you off that much - perhaps I could interest you in a boxed set of Shogun? :lol

Personally I find all this finger pointing pretty intolerable, I mean if we're really getting along as a society, let's all just STFU and get along. Otherwise let's just stop pretending and go back to the isolationist cultures what spawned us.

Well, The Fast and The Furious was basically a movie where Hollywood is exploiting somebody elses subculture. The movie has asians playing bullshit roles and playing second fiddle to the white man in a culture that asians created.

asians created suping up cars and drag racing them? That shits been going on in america since the 50s and 60s.

Kanye didn't say white people should only sing country and nothing else...he said they should quit trying to sound black and sound like themselves. If you have a problem with that statement then that's fair, but what you said is a completely different issue.

Though I have to repeat for those who missed it, I don't neccessarily agree with the viewpoint anyway...again, Christina Aguleria sounds "black" when she's wailing out those long and high notes. Same with Mariah Carey. Stuff like that doesn't matter to me,
.

I have to respectfully disagree. What's next? Japanese developers should stop appropriating western motifs and stick to their culture? The best cultural products are cultural fusions, which usually involves people from another culture acting like another culture, borrowing another culture's songs, music, motifs, and paying homage to it. Star Wars wouldn't have happened the way it happend if Lucas did not see Kurosawa movies in college. Similarly some of the best things to come out of Japan have been inspired by western movies.

Kanye may be black, but he's espousing a form of cultural segregation. The fact that he's a minority clouds the issue. If it's a white guy saying this about black people trying to be white, he'd be labeled a nazi immediately.

I can't believe this thread has reached four pages. Further proof of GAF's knee-jerk reaction to anything even remotely racist. It was just a stupid, off-hand comment that isn't even in its proper context. It's not like he was actually trying to make a statement like he was with the "Bush doesn't care about black people" thing.

Fucking ridiculous. Go worry about some other celebrity's opinions already.

There's a difference between taking some inspiration and themes from a different culture and growing up in Orange County and making a song saying "WUT, DOWN HERE WE KILL PEOPLE FO LOOKIN' AT US WORD, HOMIE?"

IMHO there isn't. The diffeene is subjective and open to interpertation. One man's homage is another's blatant theft of ideas.

It's a big grey area of cultural mixing, and my view is, if people want to act black, let them. Who is Kanye to tell white or asians kids to stop acting black to begin with? Is he the arbiter or blackness? Most black people in Africa don't even see African-Americans/Canadians/Europeans as one of them.

as the TOB already said Jrap, Jazz, and Jrock have been going on for a long time in Japan. I know that "white America" has done its share of stealing but it is not exclusive to them... Even the Koreans stole J-pop... they call it Kpop..

Groder Mullet said:
Wait, so only black people can sing those long and high notes? Perhaps you should go tell Christina Aguilera that she isn't acting like herself, she is only imitating black people.

Why should I tell Christina anything when I said in the same fucking post that you quoted that I don't disagree with his viewpoint, labeled that she sounded black in quotations, and love the way Christina sounds? Stupid fuck.

WTF, is no one able to fucking read anymore? I said I don't agree with his viewpoint, so WTF are you disagreeing with? My right to disagree with him? Jesus Christ...

The modern origins of the stuff I listen to was actually created by 3 black guys from Detroit ripping off white European producers. =P

Kanye really needs to just make music and not talk. His lyrics are totally conflicted and it seems his ideals are as well. On one hand he hates end racism, but then makes a totally racist statement. To all the defenders, what if a White artist said 'Black people should make Black music and leave our music alone"? That would be totally racist as well. Seems everytime Kanye opens his mouth, he inserts his foot. I mean, Kanye has a chance to really become a strong force in uniting people musically and socially to a degree. But it seems all he wants to do is divide.

How can you steal a musical genre? It doesn't belong to anyone! of course there's japanese rap, juts like there are black people that do karate. WTF? That's not stealing. No jazz fan listens to Keiko Matsui and accuses her of stealing Jazz. @_@

That's why I've hated his fame ever since he blew up. He's only doing harm to society so far. Pretty much the only views of his I agree with are those implying that school and college are BS.

please. You really believe any rapper or musician can do "harm to society"? Hang out with Tipper Gore much?

but I will admit that Japanese B-boys get old fast.. the good Japanese hip hop stays within their culture.. M-Flo is the perfect example of doing just that!

I don't fully understand that haha. I see no problem with embracing another culture. If a Japanese MC is rapping about his tek9, yeah that's probably too much. But as far as grafitti, breakin, turntables, and the uniform, well those are rudimentary elements of hip hop. It's only natural that they cross over. Run rapped about his Addidas over there just like he did over here. This international appeal si what gives hip hop it's power. It was never meant to stay in the ghetto.

No, I don't think people will start stealing guns because of his music, but I think it's pretty much a given that his comments will cause some little black kids to feel different from white kids and make some white people dislike black people even more.

They cross that line a lot.. but it is getting better.. they had nothing but America hip hop to look up to, they are starting to flesh out now... but you should have seen some of the videos from 2000 - 2002 era.. booooyy.. talk about fronting.. :lol

He's said in the past that the two people he'd really like to work with are Lauryn Hill and Eminem.

I think this quote is taken out of context.

He was probably talking about Linkin Park though, :lol

he has worked with Em already... to some degree.. I just think he needs to think out what he is trying to say more... before he says it.

I don't really understand what he means by this...The Beatles, for example, were a band that wanted to "sound black". Same goes for a band like the Talking Heads (who were all about appropriating African and soul music for their own ends)

I'll give you the Talking Heads but, the Beatles? Huh???

I think Kanye should try expressing himself a little more clearly, add perhaps qualifying sentence. Right now it comes off as a racist comment from someone who doesn't strike me as anymore racist then the rest of us.

I do think we can all agree P.Diddy sucks.

I saw American Graffiti, you can't trick me. If anything we should be mad at the Fast and The Furious for being a shitty movie that turned into a minor pop-culture hit.

Please explain, in any terms, how Christina sounds "black?"

here's my ignorance laid bare...

being in Japan, i'm out of touch with music massively.

anyways, i've been listening to the Bloc Party album constantly for some time, but never really looked them up.

So i went to Summersonic, where the Bloc Party were playing.

After months of assuming that they were had the usual wirey white lead singer (i guess you have to listen to them) , imagine my surprise when out pops the actual singer and proceeds to rock everyones ass.

21.jpg

in my ignorance i assumed he was white due to the music, and for that, i am a stupid tw@.
Bloc party are too awesome to describe by the way, everyone should check them out.

So now that Kanye's been damned by GAf, has anyone confirmed that these statements are real?

:lol :lol :lol this a perfect DC story.. you should have asked him some questions before hand...

DC "so what's your name?"

"Mike"

DC "Uhh so how will I know it is you?"

"I'll be singing.. you wanker!"
:lol

All music is inspired by other music. Its not like Jazz materialized out of thin air in black culture, it was inspired by other music, much of that white music (ex. bluegrass - rednecks + saxaphones).

If someone's music inspires you to create similar quality music by all means feel free. This racial profiling is what makes people listen to crap like Linkin Park, because when good black rappers say shit like this (not saying West actually did say it) it makes white people feel like they shouldn't listen to his music. But if you have a taste for rap you'll listen to something, and BOOM! Linkin FUCKIN' Park sells a million albums.

God I hate MTV.
