Katsuhiro Harada: Will Tekken 8 come to the Switch 2 any time soon? Maybe, but it'll take "a lot of work"

Speaking to Eurogamer, Tekken 8 director Katsuhiro Harada (via translation from designer Michael Murray) stated a Switch 2 port of the 3D fighting game could happen, but it'll be a costly endeavour.

In an interview at Evo earlier this month, Harada stated: "It's an interesting option, and not totally off the table. But it would require a lot of work on the game to get it running on that hardware."

Harada continued: "From a business standpoint, [the Switch 2] is doing quite well, so it would be a very good business decision if you're trying to get a bigger audience. But the amount of work that would have to be done on the game makes it not a very easy decision. At this point in time, there are no… (laughs) There is nothing to announce."

Everything is too much work for Harada and his gang. Tekken remasters? Too much work. Tag mode? Too much work. Switch port? Too much work. It really shouldn't be that difficult porting an unreal engine game over. DLSS would carry it a long way.

I love my Switch 2 and worth every penny but 3rd paty mutiplatform games is not the reason why I buy Nintendo systems....I buy mostly for their 1st and 3rd party exclusives.

I have PS5 for 3rd party mutiplatform games since I no longer care for Sony's current first party exclusives.

The demo runs beautifully on Series S so Tekken 8 should run well under Switch 2's limitations but maybe install base is not large enough to justify porting costs.

Harada: literally wore a T-shirt that said "Don't ask me for shit"

Everyone: asks Harada for shit and are shocked when they don't get shit

Yes that's what I assume too. The workload is relatively light compared to say what went into TTT2's Wii U port. But that one was most likely also supported by Nintendo.

This is a pretty standard nonanswer answer. This is what he would say if they had zero interest in bringing the game to the Switch 2 and also what he would say if a port was already in development.

It's like a Rorschach test. You're going to see what you want/expect to see, but there's no actual information being revealed.

Nintendo Switch 2 being a first pary machine confirmed.
And yet it runs arguably the most impressive looking open World game of the last ten years which was developed in less than a year with extremely early Switch 2 development kits…

If Switch 2 can run Cyberpunk 2077 with better textures than Series S then it can run a fucking fighting game lol. The question as always is do they think it will sell enough to justify the porting costs.

Maybe if played 1v1 but newly implemented mid crush was really dumb and Tekken 6 had less input delay. The tag-in juggle/rage-athons of Tag 2 annoyed the living fuck out of even the most ardent of players.
Balance that in a new port and I'll be interested. The fact it didn't get an early PS4 port was so sad. Lower sales on original release hasn't stopped others.

Technical limitations of Switch 2 will be a problem but maybe they can scale it down for switch 2.

That'll be possible for some 3rd party games. The Switch saw a lot of "impossible ports", so I'm sure we'll see some on the Switch 2.

I'm not sure why Tekken 8 would be so hard to run on the Switch 2 though 🤔

I think he meant that any port to a lower spec hardware requires a lot more time of optimisation, like we have seen with some Series S ports.

I mean why port it over? The developer himself said that it will take a tremendous amount of work and let's be real Tekken isn't going to move any real software on the switch 2. SF6 is a great example, with Nintendo and Capcom being coy about the software numbers for the machine. The same goes for Cyberpunk 2077.

Same reason they ported Ace Combat 7 to Switch. Publishers like money. Unless you have data showing that these ports are losing money, they seem to think it's worth the investment.

Show me the data that the ports I mentioned are making them money and worth the investment. The developer himself said that it's going to be difficult to port now giving that statement if what you said is true wouldnt the end justify the means? No matter how hard it was to port?

Like I say it before we have yet to see any numbers from these developers whether it be project Red Capcom or any other third-party ports that shows these titles are doing very well on the switch 2.
