Merck CEO steps down from presidential council

The CEO of the nation's third largest pharmaceutical company is resigning from the President's American Manufacturing Council citing ”a responsibility to take a stand against intolerance and extremism."

President Donald Trump lashed out almost immediately Monday at Merck CEO Kenneth Frazier on Twitter, saying Frazier ”will have more time to LOWER RIPOFF DRUG PRICES!"

Frazier's resignation comes shortly after a violent confrontation between white supremacists and protesters in Charlottesville, Virginia, that left one person dead and 19 injured. He said in a tweet on Monday that the country's leaders must ”honor our fundamental values by clearly rejecting expressions of hatred, bigotry and group supremacy."

I hate Big Pharma, but I now love Ken Frazier. It took Trump 8 minutes to denounce Frazier.

Edit: Apparently it was a bit longer, but under an hour.

Maybe Trump could spend 1/10th of that rampant energy denouncing Nazis?

Just kidding, we all know why he doesn't. Got to step carefully with Nazis and Putin.

Looking for meaning in GAF
And Trump is already bashing him on Twitter. Like clockwork.
Is Trump attaching petty adjectives to his name like he always does?

Edit: Just saw it. I guess 8 minutes isn't long enough for him to come up with anything.

Good on the CEO for doing this.

Good. When will Congress act? You don't need to commit a crime to impeach and Trump has been a daily embarrassment.

As someone is the pharma industry, Trump is the last person who I would expect to be informed about why drug prices are the way the are which is odd as he is a businessman and should know all about pricing to recoup costs.

No surprise to learn he is synonymous with bankruptcy

@brianklaas It took him 1 hour to denounce him. Nearly 48 hrs later and he still hasn't denounced nazi terrorists.

8 minutes to bash black CEO. Still waiting for him to denouce nazis/white supremacists. 🤔🤔

It wouldn't be so infuriating, if it wasn't so blatant and obvious.

When CEOs of big pharma think you are too unethical to work with that's saying something. Good on him though, for taking a stand.

It's only been like 48 hours since Trump was criticized for utterly failing to denounce a white supremacist driving over people with a car and he's already back to trolling a black dude on Twitter.

Good for him.

Oh, I never knew that Merck in the United States is a different company than Merck in Germany. As someone who lives near their Headquarters. Apparently it was expropriated by the USA during WW1.

Lmao wow. When even a rich big business guy thinks you're a piece of shit and doesn't want to help you anymore you know you're a fuck up.

The irony is how much more attention this is going to get because the orange freak tweeted about it.

It's amazing - and horrifying - that Trump can be so incensed so as to condemn someone shaming him, but not an act of vehicular murder and assault.

He's like a dumped 12 year old thinking he's zinging his ex.
He can't seem to handle any perceived slight and doesn't have the perspective to realize that this was the worst possible time to be lashing out at anyone, particularly someone resigning in response to his handling of the events over the weekend.

I am starting to to understand why he has to paint himself orange though. With skin that thin he'd probably vanish if he wasn't such a bright color.

Merck tweeted the statement at 8:00 am; Trump tweeted at 8:54. Not sure where the 8 minutes timeline is coming from unless someone knows when Trump himself found out.

It's amazing, isn't it. Trump condemns faster than the speed of light, unless of course it's white supremacist nazis.

So can't muster anything against a terrorist group, that just murdered someone, but can go after a black CEO.

"He's not racist guys!" 🙄

Obamacare might survive Trump and corporate attempts to kill it if big pharma lower their prices. Premiums would fall too. Right now I'd have thought he'd want them to raise them if anything.

Not the biggest fan of profit in medicine, but research costs money. It's probably the right thing to step away from Trump at this time.

Didn't saw your thread jag(sorry for that), but I think you should add this:

President Trump’s meeting Tuesday with pharmaceutical executives was a theatrical display of chumminess in which all the parties seemed to share deep regret over high and soaring drug prices.

It also was a one-stop shop of misconceptions and misinformation about the causes of high drug prices, and therefore a mishmash of solutions, most of which are a lot more complicated than Trump thinks, some of which won’t work, and some of which are disguised handouts to the drug industry.

Trump addressed the cost of bringing a new drug to market thusly:

“I read where it costs sometimes $2.5 billion — on average, actually — to come up with a new product.… Fifteen years, $2.5 billion to come up with a product where there’s not even a safety problem. So it’s crazy.”

Leaving aside the fact that a major part of R&D is aimed at determining whether there’s a safety problem, Trump didn’t say where he got that figure. But we know: He got it from the pharmaceutical industry, via the Tufts University Center for the Study of Drug Development, which is heavily funded by the industry itself.

But there are several issues with these studies that have been raised by critics of the industry. One is that the raw data are confidential. The latest study is based on the R&D costs of 106 drugs made by 10 multinational companies but, in common with the previous studies, neither the drugs whose costs are analyzed nor the companies in the sample are revealed. The paper says only that five were among the top 10 in global sales, seven are in the top 25 and three are outside the top 25.

Obviously, this makes any assessment of the accuracy of the Tufts estimate impossible. A study that doesn't reveal what it measured or provide a way for outsiders to reproduce its findings is hopelessly flawed, and must be judged useless as the basis for any policymaking.

Makes Trump lie even for suckers a bit more obvious

"Why is Trump attacking a black CEO but won't condemn white supremacists?"

You know damn well why

I'd prefer someone else win the Democratic nomination but Trump losing to Booker (or any minority for that matter) in 2020 would be good for my soul. Losing to a black man would torment his soul till the day he died. It's impossible to not enjoy that thought.
