Ken Levine's Top 10 Games of 2013

Right on Ken, nice mention of Lego Marvel! I had no idea he's a MODOK fan, for his future games he should include a boss in one that consists of a big head, as a tribute to him haha.

Your whole logic is flawed like The Last Of Us :lol

The Last of Us is the letdown of the gen for me.
What a boring cinematic pile.
Ken Levine not even mentioning it in his list just confirms how little importance such a game has.

I doubt in 5 years anyone will even remember it.
I find comments like these more annoying than the TLOU gargling. It just screams "please react to my unpopular hypo-bole opinion".

Sorry, did my opinion hurt your feelings?

Everyone here just HAS to point to me that TLOU just isn't that good or "nowhere near their top 10 list". But for some reason it's offensive for me to say I find people annoying hipsters when they don't place that game in a 2013 top 10 list just for the sake of being different from others.

I simply refuse to acknowledge that there are people who actually can name 10 games that were better than the Last of Us in 2013, a pretty weak year.

I know tastes matter, when picking games people liked better, but when picking a top 10 games of any year I actually look at them subjectively (or objectively. Always mix them both. The one where your taste or opinion doesn't matter). I pick the games that either excelled at doing something that made a lasting impression on the people who played them, were just so fun that pratically everyone asks for other games to emulate their formulas, or simply achieved something that few other games did.

I had more fun with dynasty warriors 8 than I did with Super Mario 3D world, yet I consider Super Mario one of the top 10 games of 2013 and dynasty warriors 8 not even near the top 30.

But like others do like to point to me (despite the fact that I actually acknowledged that on the very first... maybe second post I made in this thread), opinions.

Apparently mine does ruffle some feathers and I have "to acknowledge" that TLOU wasn't "anything special".

Yeah, ignoring important parts of posts and picking up obvious jabs is the way

TLoU is not perfect, it's good though

He didn't put the last of us on his list out of pure jealously. The last of us got all the attention infinite should have got because of the similaritys in the gameplay and it's burning him inside. He can't face the face that ND did a better job story telling, character development and companionship between the two main characters. Ken is still bitter and won't let it go for a long time.

This is seriously embarrassing. Believe what you want bro.

I don't know what's real anymore. This is getting scary.

The Last of Us launched next to his game and really cut through the conversation on Infinite, I thought. Not holding anything against someone's list, like they have an obligation to play and enjoy what I liked.

Some of you naughty dog/sony zealots make me want to leave TLoU completely off my list just out of pure spite for you guys. Luckily I have nothing else that can sub in so I can't take anything off. Petty? Sure, but I can't overstate how annoying these people can be.

You guys talk like Ken levine is a high school kid who can't cope with the fact that someone is more popular than him.

I hope you guys stop with this because it's getting ridiculous

good lord some people need to settle down. TLOU is my GOTY but not having it on a list isn't some travesty against all of gaming or jealousy or other nonsense

its not even clear if he played it. He doesn't have loads of time and a lot of his list is from 2012. I liked reading his takes on other games than "the standards" like Fallen Enchantress

a ken levine fanboy admitting to spite for the last of us. but like you said you cant sub anything in there because the last of us' greatness overcomes your hate

My god. Either my sarcasm meter is broken beyond repair, or some of you guys need to step away from the keyboard and get some fresh air. It's a personal top 10. It's subjective. Different people like different stuff.

ND, what have you loosed upon the world?

It's more like I literally have nothing left to put in a goty list. It was hard enough coming up with a 10 game list, especially when 1 of them was ruled ineligible.

what the fuck?

Dude, derrick didn't like infinite, he didn't even like bioshock 1! I was a reader-only here in GAF until recently, but if you visit this site a little, you can see derrick's instance in some games from a mile away.

I know that sometimes your feelings get in the way when trying to respect people's opinions and all, but stop with this embarrassing shit guys.

Guys

PLS

I feel you there. I made a top 5 for this reason (and TLOU wasn't in it).

Edit: A lot of people seem to be glossing over the fact that Ken's list has no fucking significant order. It's even underlined in the OP.

After reviewing the list one more time it's so clear he is envious of ND and the last of us. I don't think I'm buying another one of his games because of this. Envy is one of the 7 deadly sins and I don't want no part of him anymore.

I think the most interesting thing about Ken's list is how different the games he featured are from those he creates. Would be really interesting to see where he goes if he gives the Shock series a break.

Woah this got me interested in Unity of Command...is it very hard to get into? Love me some WW2 strategy!

Also...wtf at these TLOU posts... Guys these lists are nothing but opinions..chill out :D

I actually think I sensed some sarcasm in this one unlike your first attempt. Sadly, you played with fire and got burned.

not really. He's made more than Shock games. After making Freedom Force 1 & 2 having Lego Marvel and games like Xcom isn't a stretch

It's easy to learn, hard as hell to master. It's kind of surreal playing a game with these little cartoony soldiers and they are literally stomping your head in the curb on turn 1 of the first mission. Game doesn't take no shit.

Hey, something good came from this thread! I didn't make the connection, but that gives me hope for a Freedom Force sequel. Someday.

What the fuck is wrong with all this TLoU bullshit.... It's unbelievable. I bet he played it and didn't find it GOTY worthy, like a lot of other people out there. GET OVER IT. Also, overrated as shit IMHO.

I was getting serious DX vibes from everything about the premise of Dishonored (working for a secret "terrorist" organization against a corrupt government to whom you used to be a loyal servant, and which *probably* started the new plague) which suddenly all made so much sense when I realized Harvey Smith was behind it. You don't know how glad I am to have him back in the game.

Warren Spector's out to lunch at this point, but I really think Levine has another great one in him. The first hour or so of Bioshock Infinite, while mirroring the first in a few too many ways to be mere allusion, was still involving and wonderfully crafted, and I love the moment where everything subtly sinister about that world builds to a shocking head. He's really good at that, at this point. I can only imagine semi-open world RPG mechanics applied to that game and sigh for its lack of same.

I'm not sure about Levine, I just think his priorities have changed since he made games like Thief and System Shock. I'd really like to be wrong though lol. I remember after Infinite released there were threads created saying Infinite would have been better as a different type of genre. If System Shock was the main influence for Infinite then we'd be here talking about one of the best games ever made.

Harvey Smith being back is awesome though, I'm so fucking hyped for what he does with new hardware. We could get a game that has level design as good as Deus Ex at last.

I like Panzer Corps more (or the Generals series in ... general), but Unity of Command is pretty good, you guys. Watch your back supply routes!

Unity of Command! That game has been in my Steam wishlist since forever.

Maybe this is a sign that I should bite.

Woah this got me interested in Unity of Command...is it very hard to get into? Love me some WW2 strategy!

Same. I took a look at it on Steam and at first glance it looks like a more cartoony version of hearts of iron. To the people who've played Unity, is it like that?

Put truck in your list anyway, it won't invalidate the rest of the list.

I'm going to have it as an honorable mention.

When will the dogma about this game end? I guess when it wins GAF goty...

The way I see it, it's as disingenuous as having a Top 10 NFL QB thread for this season and leaving out Peyton Manning.

No. From what I've played of it, Unity of Command is mostly focused on warfare and tactics.

Ok but his latest outings just smeared his previous gems. I mean, seriously. Even moreso when you quote an interview saying he meaningfully made a worse game with Bioshock than what was originally planned.

While I think that games on the level of SS2 and Thief can't be smeared, I'll concede that the whole "we dumbed Bioshcok down because it wasn't going to be marketable" shit made me really, really mad and is inexcusable unless you're a 2K shareholder.
