Okay I just saw the first episode, and for the first 20 minutes or so it was actually quite good. Skeletor was easily the highlight here, as he seemed like a legit threat and not just schlocky 80's supervillain.
I knew of He Man, had a good idea of what the series was about - but did not have in depth fan level knowledge of the lore as a whole. Watched it as a filthy casual more or less.
There were several shots that made me laugh out loud though - they looked like blatant CG recreations of the toys posed like in a toy commercial. Parts of that first episode literally felt like watching kids playing with these toys - which actually felt somewhat delightful.
Then when the last few minutes hit, it's as if the show hit a wall and decided to shift gears. It felt like it tries so very hard to do what that old Batman the Animated Series episode "Over the Edge" only this didn't have the same impact that Batman episode did.
I think the good bits were actually between Sorceress and Skeletor and the overall "lore" of the universe they tried to establish. Where it sort of went downhill for me was the change in tone from cheesy action/fantasy to emotional family drama in literally the FIRST EPISODE. There should have been more time to literally play with the characters and flesh everything out some more before they tried to pull the rug out from under the fandom.
The good parts in the beginning felt like the ending of a previous adventure I would have rather seen fleshed out some more.
Either the writers ran out of cool/fun ideas at the end of the first 20 minutes or they really just wanted to get to the drama stuff right away. Will have to see if I get more time to sit down and watch a second episode?

Just finished part 1. I dont see whats woke about it honestly. Not sure if Teela actually became a lesbian, but she did became butch and had a haircut. The problem I had with the story is i dont buy Teela being angry for the whole of part 1, its stupid and nonsensical. Animation is not as good as I thought it would be. The cliffhanger ending left me intrigued at least. 5/10.

On the animation side of things, the show seems pretty off so far. They've apparently been developing this show since 2019. And yet in that time, they were only able to produce 5 episodes with sub-par quality animation? A lot of action scenes seemed like it was running in slow motion and lacking impact.
I'm not expecting a Disney level budget or anything, but Japanese Anime has spoiled me on action scenes. When several drastically underpaid animators are able to make some nice looking fight scenes on a budget, it just kinda makes MotU look like a bad joke.
I'm also having a hard time figuring out the target demographic for this show. It's supposed to be a direct sequel to the original series, but all they did was piss off old fans.
The original series was clearly targeted at young boys, but this series appears to be going in the opposite direction since they apparently fucked up She-ra already and have since decided to target a bitter man hating feminist demographic.
I just don't even with Western media anymore.

I just finished Part 1. I went into it with no expectations. I tell you what, it took me back a little bit. Having been a child in the 80’s when this toy line launched, I had Grayskull, Snake Mountain and later on, The Slime Pit. Masters of The Universe for me was the beginning of creativity and putting plots and storylines together. I have fond memories of the cartoon, although I never considered it “cannon”.
My He-Man adventures started with the enclosed comic books, which were a lot different than when the cartoon came out. I remember hating the bumbling villains and the ‘moral of the story’ bullshit that even as a child felt pretty silly. They got subsidies from the US Government for this as I later found out. This show got me back to having all of the figures like Clawful, Whiplash, Roboto, Stratos, and many of the vehicles that never got a lot of time on the show, or were turned into “KITT” from Knight Rider and looked totally different than the toy. I’m glad that this show put those characters to use, even though their sequences were short.
Kevin Smith did a good job with this show and it was worth my time to watch it. It’s very unique and something that no other MOTU show has ever done before. He showed respect for the characters and their motivations, but also got the feel of the original show and the comics.

Also, seriously, I don't recall a transformation sequence like that in either of the other shows.....

I'm watching the first episode. It's kinda fun actually? Doesn't seem particularly woke so far. The action is good, the drawings are rad, lots of cool lights and effects. Hopefully subsequent episodes stay that way.

Absolute rubbish. Why even call it He-Man
? The promotional materials are totally bait-and-switch too, since 90% of the footage comes from the 1st episode, which does not represent the tone or direction at all. They could’ve actually set expectations instead of this hamfisted attempt/ obsession with subverting them with progressive tropes—a practice that has become so rote and expected that their “twist” isn’t really subversive anymore.
I thumbed down and disliked the show as soon as I finished the 1st episode then went online and discovered my assessment of the reboot was in line with the public consensus.
when he’s vaporized along with his arch nemesis and then you replace the titular hero thereafter with a Mary Sue no one really cared about

Now that you mention it, there's something else a bit disturbing with that scene: Teela's so hung up on the lie and doesn't seem to have any consideration that the king and queen just found out that they lost a son and their champion to give them a moment to mourn. It's about her feelings.

Some comparisions being drawn to the last jedi and I agree. Deconstructs everything likeable about the original and has every single modern trope of a "strong female". Whilst I anticipated Teela being the star of the show, which is fine in itself, she's an unlikeable bag of crap.

It's a total clusterfuck. In the heat of the battle, Skeletor kills Moss Man and that's enough to make He-Man forget about being a lawful good hero, a person who saved Skeletor's life more times than I can count because ALL LIVES MATTER, and make him STAB SKELETOR IN THE GUT.
I mean ...
If you want to make a hero forget that he's a hero and flat out attempt to kill his opponent, at least kill a person He-Man is emotionally invested in and make the death MATTER. Skeletor doesn't kill Marlena, doesn't kill Randor, doesn't kill Teela, doesn't kill Cringer, doesn't kill Orko.
He kills. Fucking. Moss Man.
This is the equivalent of Spider-Man losing his shit and attempting to murder the Green Goblin because he killed ... I don't know, Quicksilver? It makes zero sense in terms of characterization and the more I think about it, the angrier I get.
It feels cheap, rushed, nonsensical and un-earned. Nobody gives a flying fuck about Moss Man, so nobody's invested emotionally in this scene. Which makes He-Man's rage all the more artificial and fake. It's bad writing to the max.
AND YOU ARE RIGHT, by the way.
Teela manages to make a scene which has nothing to do with her (King and Queen mourning son and champion) INTO ALL ABOUT HER. She's portrayed as a selfish, entitled, stuck-up bitch who is flat out unlikable.
I mean, when Adam sneaks up on her from behind, she grapples with him and humiliates him, then goes on saying shit like: "Really, Adam, I have faced all the enemies of Snake Mountain and all kinds of dangers. Did you really think such an attack would work on me?" And I'm like ... ARE YOU FOR REAL!?!?
Imagine this scene with the roles reversed. He-Man humiliating Teela and saying "I've defeated Skeletor and the Evil Warrior countless times. Did you really think such an attack would work on me?" as he casually walks away with a cocky smirk on his face. Wouldn't you think, 'Wow. What an asshole' ?
AND OH MY GOD.
Skeletor in the end says to Andra, "Look at my face, child! It has furnished for me a lonely life in which none would have me as a man... so ... then let me be a God."
Ladies and gentlemen, after forty years, we finally know - we finally learn why Skeletor was trying to break into Castle Grayskull all this time and take the Power. It was because ....

I was wondering if Drinker would do a review on this. He never disappoints. But damn, Teela really comes off as a total unlikable asshole
It's funny because your post came right after the Drinker link and you channel the same energy as he does, as well as cover the same main point, particularly the scene at the start of Teela making everything about "ME! ME! ME!" in spite of the tragedy that just occurred. And instead of rallying to the kingdom she serves and supporting her father, she berates everyone and throws away everything like a drama queen. Exactly how is this supposed to make anyone care or like this character?
It's funny because I swear if Teela was a man, they'd be complaining that she was acting out Toxic Masculinity here (most in the past would have just said she's a douchebag), yet because she's a woman, this was meant to be an "empowering" moment most likely...

What happened to Kevin Smith? I love his earlier work, in particular both Clerk movies. From what I read, once he started smoking pot, he went downhill quick. It sounds like he just takes anything that is thrown at him now, when he used to only do projects he was interested in (anything with Jay and Silent Bob in it).

Finished the 5 episodes and enjoyed it, not the greatest thing ever and I never expected it to be. Just a fun and light hearted adventure story. I liked the animation, laughed at the corny jokes and LOVED the music.
Really liked Orko, loved his magic use in episode 4.
Anyone calling Teela gay has not watched the show.

I honestly feel Kevin Smith is a fraud and a hack. I mean, when people talk about his "glory days", it's just Clerks, and those were what, 20+ years ago now? I never understood why someone who made what was basically a very very niche/cult film two decades ago is this big shot creative, when it seems that most things he's been involved with since then have been things no one has heard about.

I posted plenty of reasons to show how shitty this show is other than MAH WAHMEN. The story is badly written and full of holes, 80% of the cast acts out of character, Skeletor's motivation for villainy is basically the fact that he's an incel, characters accommodate the story instead the other way around, the show kills its icon two times within 90 minutes ... it's a fucking mess.

I just watched it. Apart from Teela being angry all the time, it was quite good! It had stakes and while it was Teela and company ... It was truly about the whole world of eternia... Not just He-man. I liked how everyone got a chance to shine.

Watched two episodes, turned it off and put on my dvd of Bakshi and Frazetta's "Fire and Ice" to get my animated sword and sorcery fix.

This is such a punchable moment in the show and demonstrates how completely unlike the characters these portrayals are right up there with Randor moving from concerned father to abusive asshat.
When people say they like the show and that it is true to their childhood, I can only imagine it’s because the show reinvents the story to cater to broken people and their nihilistic outlook on life.
The original show is something you could hand children today and understand that it reflects positive relationships and advocates good over evil. These modern takes all seem focussed on dysfunctional relationships to the point where you would hope no girl ever grows up to be a Teela or Princess of Power.
