I'm very much enjoying the polarizing opinions in this thread. I'm not exactly sure why I'm so invested in it, but I like it.

Yes, the kid should not have share played with a stranger, but the fact this person is even playing with 11 year olds, nevermind deleting their characters just because they can, is truly pathetic.
I actually think this opens up a much larger conversation. It would not be alright at all for a 38 year old to walk up to an 11 year old on the streets and start hanging out with them. I also believe it is not alright for the same thing to happen virtually.

The Deadpool guy sounds like Dwight from the office. One of those people who get drunk on the smallest amount of power you can imagine someone getting. Its also hilarious.
Read the whole post. Harshest in the circumstances - which is him playing a video game. Equating this to some larger stranger danger thing is a silly stretch. My kid the same age knows not to ride with a stranger but might not know exactly how shareplay works. I honestly didn't know shareplay worked like this.

Man, that was cold. I wonder if his friend Pizzapizza03 set him up after the kid brushed him off. Earlier in the video you see the kid telling Pizzapizza03 that he's busy streaming and to "go away." Maybe Pizza took offense and told those guys that his friend was being a dick and they thought it'd be fun to prank him like that.
I also wonder if it's within Bungie's ability to reinstate or at least rebuild his characters for him. But the fact that he's on a stream trying to show people how to cheat probably shuts down that possibility regardless.

Everyone has this moment at some point in their life. It can be funny for us because we remember how dumb and naïve we were back then too. The difference is being older you have the perspective to know this is small stuff. I can tell you I laughed at it a little because I can relate to my own self and own kids at that age. Kind of like everyone who has owned a bike has fell off at some point. So you can laugh as a show of empathy, not a lack of it.
That isn't to say the Kermit dude isn't a sack of shit that shouldn't have half his face deleted, but if I was the parent of this kid, I would at least be 99% more certain he wouldn't do anything that colossally stupid again.... or if he did, I could at least take steps to mitigate any real or permanent damage.
When it's something as inconsequential as this? No problem. Lost 175HR skyrim save by not backing up my files before dicking with mods, lesson learned.
EDIT: Deadpool's story is amazing. If I got a call from the school telling me that my kid was playing minecraft on school computers I'd go fucking nuclear on the game saves

But this is a kid, and I'm assuming you are a bit older and can put this kind of loss into perspective.
You don't need to convince me that its not worth getting worked up over losing a game character. I just think the saying it would teach him a lesson, while true, is kind of unnecessary. Its not weakness to show the kid some sympathy, instead of trying to be wise and unsympathetic.

Yep. The kid may have been wrong, but that asshole sure as fuck deserves a "life lesson" too. If he's for dishing out that "tough love", he should also be prepared to take some. I'm pretty sure quite a few of the people advocating it here never experienced any either.
Again, the kid doesn't deserve a whole lot or really any sympathy here. This would be a stupid thing to do with anyone, much less a total stranger- even at 11 he ought to know better.

Sadly I don't think most people who are laughing are doing so in commiseration with the kid. They just seem to find it funny he got hurt and can justify it by claiming he needed to learn a lesson. Almost everyting that kids worry about is small stuff from the perspective of an adult but that doesn't invalidate their feelings. Truth be told most of the things people debate all day here like metacritic ratings or resolution differences are no more important in the larger perspective.
That's not how it works though. You have to personally hand control to a player. It's not like your party can just take turns without your consent.
Wow some of the people in the Youtube comments. They are basically blaming the victims of this for being deceived by the trolls. Yeah, it could have been prevented, but the kid isn't in the moral wrong here, he was just unwise, the people who did the deleting are the obvious ones to point at. What is WRONG with people these days?

Just because the kid was in the wrong doesn't mean you can't sympathize with him. They're not conflicting thoughts/emotions. Someone being in the wrong doesn't negate their heartbreak - they'll know better next time, but at the initial outset, that had to be excruciating for him.
I first want to give him a hug, then when he's calmed down, have a very stern talking to him.
Then, you know, act like a parent and kind of pay attention to what he's actually doing after that. If I were to ever want/have kids, I'd know who they're friends were on their friends list at all times. At least at this age.
I think this says something about the state of games today. When you get down to it, this kid is partly crying at the thought of playing Destiny. I know what it's like to lose a save but I can't imagine feeling that way about any of the Halo games. I played through the Halo CE numerous times, because it was fun. Maybe I'm just getting old. Back in my day, we played games without incentives, in the snow, uphill both ways.
I don't sympathize with doing something so monumentally stupid other 11 year olds would have to stop and laugh at.
Oh, Kermit worked for Bungie and character deletion for cheating was in the EULA and Terms of Service. I missed that.

My wife cried when she lost a few hours of work in FF7, a game she ALREADY beat during her childhood.
They do make mistakes, and when it's one like this, it's best to just laugh at it.

Honestly, I really do think this is the proper punishment for Kirmitthefrog. I would think it would be in Sony's and Bungie's best interest cause you don't want to gain a reputation of people playing on you are just trolls and you have to constantly worry about them (especially Sony trying to promote stuff like Shareplay. Already I see a lot of people not just say, "Don't let strangers use shareplay" but outright say this is why they don't like Shareplay).
Yeah, the kid might have been trying to glitch. But I don't think glitching is that unfair, it's something anyone can do (it's not like he's trying to get an advantage others couldn't do themselves). I mean I don't really like abusing glitches that much unless they are small ones (partly due to the not worth the risk if the developer decides to punish those who abuse it and partly due to the fact that it is more rewarding to me to play the game for the rewards). But I feel if some one else is willing to take the risk they are only cheating themselves of feeling more accomplished if they just glitch instead. I don't see it as a huge crime/cheat (especially as anyone can take advantage of those glitches if they want and there is the risk that the glitch might bite you back if the developer decides to punish players for doing it).
It's not near as huge an a**holish thing to do as the guy who comes up and erases some one's whole character that they put a lot of time into. Especially by trying to entrap the kid by offering him a glitch (not even going after some one who already is exploiting a glitch but trying to get him to exploit a glitch). That is disproportionate to what the kid was trying to do. And people who think the a**hole was justified... learn how to realize the punishment should be proportionate to the crime. Some one glitching is not capitalizing on some one else's misfortune but just improve their own. The person erasing the character? He's trying to make some one else miserable solely for his own entertainment. And I could care less about entertainment gained by the misery of others.
People like to get on high horses that because you are stupid it is ok to take advantage of you. Or even that you were being stupid.
Worst thing is is that everyone does stupid stuff in their life. No one is immune to it, it's human nature. Hell, on bad days we do stupid stuff that we know better usually (just usually we get the luck of nothing happens from it. It's not that there are people who never do stupid things. It is that there are people who may not do them often and have the luck of when they do do something stupid nothing happens from it).
I really dislike this attitude that if you did something stupid, you deserve some one else taking advantage of it. How about it is never right to take advantage of some one even if they left an opening for you to do so? It seems a lot of people are in this mentality that that some how makes it more ok to take advantage of some one. It's the same mentality a lot of scam artists like to take (well, it's their own fault for falling to my tricks, I'm not the bad one here. They should have wised up).
