kids talk stupid

I overheard someone say "hey chat" out loud in a real-life conversation the other day while talking to their friends.

I used to think I was pretty cool when I was younger and still use a lot of the same slang you heard in the 90s. but modern shit like "rizz," "delulu," "sigma" sounds so stupid

am I getting old or did youth slang get worse? am I stupid for thinking 90s slang is timeliness but this new crap is just retarded? am I out of touch?

Slang has always been stupid sounding to the olds, that's the whole point

it's both. the stuff we used to say sounded really cringe also. but they're cool to the people saying them at those times. the kids you heard saying that will have the same thoughts in 30 years when they heard whatever shit the kids say in those times too.

Don't get me wrong, they had their place in the 90's and such, but I hardly hear anyone using them now and for good reason.

Also, saying "dude" is of course still acceptable, however there's a more strict limit on daily usage of the word compared to the 90's. We even have a specific division of time cops ready to arrest anyone who illegally surpasses that limit and they will send them back to the 90's where they belong.

I still say bro, dude, tight, sick, hella, rad, etc. and I was born in the 80s

I was born in the 80's too, and I gotta say, why don't you get "mid"? It's short for "middle", thus it being used to mean someone thinks something is average to them actually makes total sense. Honestly I'm surprised it didn't originate far earlier.

I get that one, I actually dislike it for a different reason.

mid has been slang in Cali ever since dispensaries opened. it refers to middle (or mid) shelf weed. above the bottom shelf, below the top shelf.

I'm realizing I actually don't mind that one much after typing this out I'm not sure why I included it, I'll remove it from OP.

Totally radical my main g, let's grab some hang time before we split and hit the bricks, we ready? Let's pop!

I say all of that except hella. That should be grounds for immediate imprisonment or justification for assault. Might be the worst slang in human history.....well, before sigma and rizz were willed into existence by some unholy entity.

I lived in the Bay Area when the hyphy scene was still poppin off

It was a magic time

This boomer thread is hella ohio. Just yesterday I was skibidi rizzing up a gyatmaxxer with level ten aura like a sigma no cap and that shit was bussin.

this must be one of those american-only things because my 13 year old daughter and her group of friends talks normally at least when they are at our house after school (england).

If anything, they don't really talk that much. Most of them are just glued to their phones / watch netflix.

I am always surprised when the topic of school in 2025 comes up because it is so different to when I was a kid. We had different 'groups' of kids, the nerds, the jockey type douchebags, the quiet / weird kids, the normies etc... none of that really exists anymore. All the kids get along really well and bullying / infighting seems to be a thing of the past. There are so many things in place now to stop disfunctional shit from going down. We had fights and problems pretty much every day when I was a kid. Shit was crazy.

Kids are supposed to be stupid to an extend and/or certain age. It's even worse in games that is mostly played by people around my age that use this slang.
I'm already ashamed that I even know about these in the first place.

"minmax"
"pumping/pumper"
"W"
"L"
"yoooo"
"no shot"

When kids say these things I'm not worried. When you're around 30 or older, then something clearly went wrong somewhere.

I'm 36 and I have never heard people say words like rizz or sigma in real life.
I have family in high school and they don't talk like that either. I feel like it is mostly an internet thing or a stereotype.

it's the constant pressure from social media and needing 5 minutes of fame.

All youth have their slang and change the vernacular throughout Generations. But Gen Z has it bad.

They literally have self worth and self importance tied to being trend setters and also keeping up with trends.

basically most if not all of the cool kid speak today will be dead and buried in a couple of years.

That's a completely different topic, but one worth exploring too. Basically, the inability of certain millennials to grow up and mature, people in their 30s-40s living with stuffed toys on their beds and branded bedding, etc.

I agree that's more of a sign of something going wrong than just kids trying to find their voice to "rebel" against the oldies.

Yeah man, it was fucken awesome. I miss it so much.

Obviously, you're old. I'm 41, and yeah, new slag sucks because I'm 41. It's not for us, dude, just let it go. I'm gonna stick to using the slang I grew up with and make my kid cringe so fucking hard in front of their friends when they get older, it's gonna be awesome.

A group of girls was talking on the subway this week and they called each other "Bro".
I mean, its 2025 and gender is fluid, but it made this old chap (me) laugh.

You are so chalant.

Tiktok kids have no vibe and zero style, fo shizzle.

Fo real tho. All these tweeners doing dumb ass dances for e-cred. Meanwhile they can't figure out how to open a door.

I work in a middle school and only a handful of students use it opposed to the rest of the population. The kids that do use it are the ones that are super addicted to TikTok and are so worried about their subscribers. Things have changed so much over the past 20 years at my job.

I think there's an extra layer of cringeworthiness on it because it's the bleed over of internet into the real life of a generation raised with the internet being in their lives since day one.

The closest equivalent would be someone throwing out l337 in real life.

But in the kids' defence OP, it could have been a self aware thing that you weren't aware of. You've got to hold onto a sliver of hope.

Reminds me of this that popped up on my feed :

They brought in some dork wannabe comedian to try something very similar to us in the 90s, got a pretty good response from most of the students, but me and my buddies held the line just like this dude right here:

Shoutout to my nonplussed brother in arms.

Isn't "hey, chat" just an ironic/meta joke that's pretty apparent to any youngsters today who spend time watching live-streaming? Sorry, but it's you who seems out of touch.

Personally I would rather die than say hey chat irl, but that's because I'm 30+.
