Rare is overseeing it but the company is much diff than it was in the 90s. It's not true that every one of the orig KI devs is working on it as they no longer work for Rare. I believe whomever still works for Rare that was on KI is involved but it's very few. That's fine though b/c the real big players (Ken, the original composer of the music, etc) are still overseeing. The Double Helix guys seem like super fan boys which is great to see.

If it really is one of the original KI developers, they don't work at Rare anymore. One works at Starfire Studios. Though that studio has only made games for MS so far, they are not Rare. Mark Betteridge is gone as well as Martin Hollis.
 
Tried this briefly at E3 and I walked away impressed because I had very, very low expectations.

The character design is predictably horrible although the shaders and models themselves are nice (so Sabrewulf gets a pass)

Game definitely feels like Killer Instinct. That part they nailed, game felt responsive enough and the sound effects in particular stood out as a positive.

Theyre definitely borrowing heavily from SF IV in terms of look, feel and gameplay stuff .. but thats not bad, at least they have good taste.

Combo breakers look to have been made more "casual" by the exclamation sign above your head when receiving a combo. The color of the sign lets you know which combo breaker to use.

Looking forward to playing it more in the future, definitely more fun to play than Mortal Kombat ;)

Actually, the exclamation marks don't let you know which combo breaker to use. They tell you that you have used the wrong one.

Red: Wrong button used
Orange: Right button used but wrong timing.

The PR guy I spoke to at the MS party Monday night told me that the game was F2P, but wasn't able to offer additional details. It was an error on Double Helix/MS part, not journalists.
 
So this game is being made by a new studio staffed up with former Rare employees and fighting vets, with Rare also helping out? That's a smart move and I hope they do the same with PD, Banjo, and Conker.

And the dude said that it also means you cant do another breaker for 3 seconds after a failed one.

It's the opposite, if anything. The old KI wasn't balanced around high level play. But the new KI has the potential to break into the big leagues, if they get the balance and mechanics right.

That's going to be tough, and still a major concern for me. If you can break everything, that's what will happen at the highest level of play. If there's anything you can't break, that's all people will use at the highest level of play.

It's been stated that manual combos are hard to execute and hard to break. They're definitely hard to break, but compared to 1-frame links in SF4, they're pretty easy to execute. So at this point, the game would be all manual combos at the highest level of play.

I'm also concerned about block strings. When I played against Ken Lobb's Jago, I felt like I was in block stun for at least 10 hits, which left him with a full meter that I could do nothing about. It's also very difficult to jump projectiles on reaction. Not sure if it was due to the height of the projectile, or the speed, but unless you were at full screen, you weren't jumping on reaction.

I still really liked the game, but at this point DH will have to find that happy median so high-level play is entertaining.
 
I have been think about why it is going to be digital release only with no retail disc.

I think that when the game launches in November it will not be feature complete. I believe they are going to use a similar model to what some devs of PC do: allowing you to purchase and play the game in alpha/beta as they update it.

They have said they only started on the game 10 months ago, and it's 5 months till release. Not the longest development time. In interview they always mention the 'first season' when talking about what they are going to release.

Yeah, that could very well be true. Would be pretty interesting. Hopefully showcase to us how better MS's certification process will be next-gen.

I remember Chris Tilston saying in an interview that if he made a new KI game it wouldn't even be a fighting game because the original KI was made to be as pure of an arcade game as possible and wouldn't work as a fighting game on consoles (apparently he wasn't a fan of the SNES or N64 ports either).

It's sort of a weird way to look at it but I definitely see where he's coming from.
 
Just watched a bit of the stream.. I really miss the emphasis on the combo voice overs in the new one. Don't get me wrong, playing the new Killer Instinct and hearing them in person is still satisfying (especially on the arcade cabinet at E3), but it's not as impactful as the original without the "combo" at the end of each. As an example to what I mean, the new KI simply says "HYPER", "BRUTAL" etc as opposed to the original saying "HYPER COMBO", "BRUTAL COMBO". It makes a difference.

I agree and I hope enough people keep pointing this out in hopes they'll make a change.

I can't remember which video, but in terms of a purchase model I'm reasonably sure you could buy each character one at a time or a "season pass where you can get all the characters" so I think they'll dribble characters one or two at a time.

Might be fun, with people getting excited about which character is coming.

People are hyped because of the first hand impressions, the details given out by the devs, and from what we have seen from the gameplay videos.

After watching the Cross Counter stream, I'm even more excited than I was before. However I do think the way they implemented the reveal into Microsoft's conference was pretty messy. Personally I think the game looks solid from the available footage, but I guess I may be one of the few that feels that way. Not to mention I'm liking what they're doing with the fighting mechanics.

You heard wrong. Although it was interesting watching Valle try to play Jago like he was Ryu. That definitely will not work against anyone who knows what they're doing. I expect Alex to change his play style once he has more time with the game.

Based on what? Did you play the game in-person at E3 or are you just going by videos? Having logged in a good 10 hours throughout E3, I can say that this game looks and plays considerably better than KI1/2/Gold. For you to even say KI2/Gold looks better is pretty ridiculous.

Having put an equal amount of time or more last week into the game, I couldn't agree more with this statement.

Ken Lobb is working on Killer Instinct, and he was a designer on the original (trust me, you know who he is... Ever use the KLobb smg in Golden Eye? That gun is named after him). He works at MS now as a creative director, and this was one of his projects.
